Michigan vs. Illinois Game thread 12p FS1
Livers is back in the lineup. Let’s hope that’s the good Mojo we need to get back on track

All things aside, not going 2 for 1 with 52 seconds left is just baffling to me. That's on the coaching staff. You've got 3 timeouts. I don't understand not calling one and drawing up a quick hitter. You want to talk analytics Coach? 2 opportunities is better than one.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:13 PM ^
Based on what you saw, what makes you think that they would have gotten two quality shots out of this team?
January 25th, 2020 at 2:17 PM ^
That's obviously not my point. The coaching staff had the power to make that last minute play out in our favor. Juwan comes from the NBA where going 2 for 1 is a no-brainer for every team in the league. Even if he's inexperienced, he's got an experienced staff behind him. The fact that nobody spoke up and told Juwan to take a timeout is honestly baffling to me.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:14 PM ^
I can see it both ways. They got exactly what they wanted with teske on a smaller defender. Teske has to make that. I mean, compare the quality of the last 2 shots of the game. It’s just a dong punch.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:21 PM ^
Mitch, I agree completely that they got the shot that they wanted. My point is, call timeout and draw that up immediately when you got the rebound instead of running offense for 15-18 seconds and ensuring that Illinois would have the last shot.

January 25th, 2020 at 2:17 PM ^
Yep. It's the year 2020 and our last shot of the game is a post up by a guy who probably shoots them at a 30% clip. We used to make our living under Beilein by taking advantage of teams who shot inefficiently. We'd give up like 24 points to Isaac Haas on 22 shots and we'd win by 10. Now we're on the other side of that coin and it's embarrassing. Not embarrassing to not have talent, but embarrassing to ignore math and logic. We've become Kentucky and Kansas if they only had 3 stars
January 25th, 2020 at 2:30 PM ^
I actually disagree with most of what you just said.
1. Teske is a 54% shooter and his post shooting percentage is even higher than that. He's 28% from 3 and that's what brings his average down.
2. This team by and large forces other teams to take 2 point shots at a higher rate than Beilein's teams did. What they are not good at is forcing the ball out of the hands of the opposing team's best player. In fact, we are terrible at it. There are some fundamental defensive philosophical changes that I believe are the culprit.
The only thing I was pointing out is the lack of going 2 for 1.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:11 PM ^
Fire Howard and hire Yaklich immediately. This is bullshit
January 25th, 2020 at 2:23 PM ^
Yes hire the guys whose Texas defense is ranked lower than Michigan's
January 25th, 2020 at 2:11 PM ^
Well at least our coach hands outs donuts to students . Nice coaching Juwan !
January 25th, 2020 at 2:11 PM ^
Ok, I have no idea how Wagner was so high on Beilein’s list. How did Castleton get a scholarship offer is besides me. There are 7 guys on this team that should be given a firm handshake.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:18 PM ^
Wagner would never have been the go to guy in his first year under Beilein. He would've had a freshman Zak Irvin role. And Castleton had promise at the end of the year but not surprising to see his development fall off a cliff once Beilein left
January 25th, 2020 at 2:26 PM ^
Castleton is a below the rim tweener with no shooting range. But I'm sure we'd be looking at an Elite 8 run if Coach B was here to unlock his hidden 5* abilities. Juwan just has no clue how to relate to a 6'9" undersized post player.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:11 PM ^
Our seniors have turned into pumpkins since Beilein left. Shows you just how good of a coach coach B was .

So many damn mistakes and missed free throws.
When Livers went out, the dynamic changed

This team needs therapy from the psychologist. This shooting issue is in their heads. Wagner bricks two FTA that likely wins the game? You can’t make that up. He is a 90% guy from the line !
January 25th, 2020 at 2:12 PM ^
At the end of the day Simpson isn't good enough to be our best player
January 25th, 2020 at 2:20 PM ^
And he would agree. In Simpson's perfect world he'd be getting 15 assists a game with zero non-transition shot attempts.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:12 PM ^
This is by far the worst shooting team I have ever seen. 5 missed free throws in a row. That’s untucking believable. This season is over and will not win another game. Hope Howard’s recruits play better than this in years to come. Wagner had so much hype coming in and he is terrible. 2- 14 shooting threes the last 2 games. I’m just waiting for the softball team now. Maybe they won’t depress me watching them.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:13 PM ^
this is two losses i put on the coaches; despite poor shooting. put your team in the best position to win. that includes defense.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:16 PM ^
I’m not sure what you mean here. Howard put M in a position to win. 9 missed FTs including I think 5 straight to end the game. We also had a way higher quality shot than Illinois on our last possession. This is squarely on the players in my opinion.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:18 PM ^
disagree. you have to double dosunmu and make him give up the ball in that situation. if a guy like georgi or feliz jacks up the 3, so be it.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:21 PM ^
Simpson played great D on the last possession, played him tough with a hand right in his face, he made a ridiculously tough shot. Tip of the cap to him. Make a free throw in the final 2 minutes and it probably doesn't come to that. Sucks to lose but good god this is a horrible take.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:22 PM ^
There is no good defense that involves doubling a player well beyond the 3 point line at the top of the key not off a screen. He would be able to see the double coming for like 3 seconds and any competent team above the middle school level is getting a layup. If you think a fall away contested long 2 is a better shot than a wide open layup you are just stupid.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:24 PM ^
i call bullshit on the auto layup when howard had teske and davis on either side of the rim.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:38 PM ^
Well if they are at the rim than you have now left 3 players on a d1 team wide open since that means they aren't rotating off the double. This might be the dumbest shit I've ever read. If you think a wide open catch and shoot shot with no pressure from any player on that court isn't a better shot than the one they got you probably also think Kobe was clutch and I have a pyramid scheme to sell you.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:36 PM ^
If Coach B and Yak were here we'd double every team's best player and we'd be undefeated this season bc of it. This is what I've learned on here.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:16 PM ^
Make a free throw at the end of the game and it's likely a M win. Get over it, life goes on.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:18 PM ^
You're right. Juwan has to hit those 4 free throws that Zavier and Wagner missed, and he needs to make Zavier grow so that when he's inside Dosunmu's jersey on game-winning shot attempt he has enough length to block it next time.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:19 PM ^
i count that as offense. i specifically mentioned the D.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:14 PM ^
God I pray we do not go the way of Georgetown with Patrick Ewing, hiring an alum as a coach. Don’t think it is all Juwan’s fault, but this has gotten ugly for a program that has had higher standards for a while. The roster isn’t helping but it’s a struggle to see us being .500 in conference. Add to that the massive fracturing of some famous alums from the program if he ends up getting fired.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:20 PM ^
Oh man I can't imagine how much the program would crumble if Jimmy King stopped coming to our games
January 25th, 2020 at 3:05 PM ^
.500 in conference is a pipe dream right now.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:14 PM ^
Of course. Of fucking course! Every chance to win and can’t get it done AT HOME! Illinois didn’t play well. M just sucked and sucked even more when there was an opportunity to win.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:18 PM ^
Season turned into a disaster .
one player being out can’t be this bad . DDJ regressed , is Teske thinks he is Nowitski , Franz talking crap all game and can’t shoot anymore , garbage ft shooting ! Brooks is as inconsistent as anyone around . Give up that damn 7 ft glass shot that he is always long on .
January 25th, 2020 at 2:19 PM ^
THis team finds ways to lose. This was a novel one.
Shooting, whether at the line, or 2 feet from the basket takes at least a little bit of focus. This team has NO focus whatsoever.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:20 PM ^
Why put redshirt on one player ? Probably our best shooter and he can’t be as bad a Nunez . Let me play a few meaningful minutes
January 25th, 2020 at 2:20 PM ^
I couldn't have been the only person thinking that this may not be such a good idea for a guy coming off a groin injury as Livers was going up for that dunk.
Still, it was a winnable game. Got Cockburn to foul out and couldn't take advantage. Free throw shooting was pathetic down the stretch.
Gonna be a long season. Good news is that tickets are going to be cheap again.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:21 PM ^
Not just the 5 missed free throws that was terrible coaching at the end. Michigan should have absolutely taken that last shot earlier in the shot clock which would have insured they would have gotten the ball back with the opportunity to tie or win the game. Always take Two possessions when you can. The way it worked out Illinois worst case scenario was to tie and go to OT. Poor decision making again.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:28 PM ^
After 5 missed free throws and a bunny at the rim ... you still want to blame coaching? Man.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:21 PM ^
I have been a fan of Michigan athletics for almost 50 years. This might be the disappointed I have been. The football team can’t win a big game and the basketball team can’t even make a fucking free throw to win a game. I hope someday we get back to the glory days. Not holding my breath.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:25 PM ^
90s Michigan is long gone. The 2 decades since have been one long continuous punch to our collective magnum dong.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:23 PM ^
WHo loses in a more embarassing and miserable fashion? Michigan football or Michigan basketball? This is one hell of a year so far...
January 25th, 2020 at 2:31 PM ^
Let's not get carried away. Football still wins that category hands down.
January 25th, 2020 at 2:45 PM ^
Football and it's not even close.
