Joe's Pizza (of NYC) coming to South U

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on September 5th, 2019 at 8:18 AM

Per this reddit thread, one of the best pizza places in NYC is setting up shop on South U. This is pretty great news for the pizza lovers among us, particularly those from New York who happen to be in Ann Arbor. I'll be curious to see if it tastes the same with Ann Arbor water. I hear the PFAS really brings out the yeasty flavor of the dough.

Well first off all pizza is Italian. That’s where it came from. Even the guy who started Joe’s came from Italy.

Joe’s Pizza is mediocre at best. At best. It’s probably only famous because celebrities go there and people are stupid and want to post pics on social media and say “oh hey look at me I’m cool I ate at a famous pizza place celebs eat at and I saw Leonoardo DiCaprio eating there!”.

Secondly, calling BS on you right now. You didn’t name any supposed places that are better. Let’s hear em champ. Lucalis is the best damn pizza in that entire city. You sound like someone who a) can’t afford it or b) has trouble getting in. It’s pretty expensive as far as pizza goes- pretty easy to drop $35 on a single pizza there and it’s very difficult to get in as they are a small place with maybe not even 10 tables and demand to get in is crazy. You need to know someone or you need to get there at 3:30pm and wait an hour and a half in line outside to put your name down for a reservation.

Long story short- Supinos is the best in the entire country. Right here in Detroit. You won’t find a better pizza anywhere than you will right here in Detroit.

For starters, I am quite well aware of the origin of pizza, but pizza in Italy is not a "NY street slice." Moreover, I lived in Italy for three years and have been in Cobble Hill for the last 12 years, as well 18 out of the last 21. I'll take my opinion over yours and can certainly get myself into places around here. I also know what's hype, overrated, and or very good (Lucali's)...but also not worth the hassle.

Secondly, Numero 28 in Cobble Hill is better for "Italian Style" and the staff/owners are almost all Italian born. I should know....I talk with them in Italian often. If price is your criteria for good pizza then Numero 28 is Lucali's prices, as well as Luzzo's on Atlantic. But hey, everything is overpriced here these days including Carrol Gardens Diner who charges $7 for an English Muffin. So, not sure price constitutes good. On the cheaper end, and one that is a nice change of pace, is Brado on Atlantic  - which makes a nice thin crust. Best NY slice in the neighborhood is the shit hole My Little Pizzeria on Court...but only when they cook it well enough. Why? Because like Joe's they have a great tomato sauce that's just sweet enough and with the right amount of cheese. I'm sure others in NY have their favorite NY Slice place, but there's a reason Joe's has been a staple for decades...and it's not because of celebrities.

If you are ever in the northern NJ area, try Kinchley's...best thin crust around.

Wow. Is Joe's a chain? I thought they just had that 1 spot in the East Village. I was drunk a few months ago and went to Mamoum's for a falafel and then to Joes for a slice. Good times!

Joe's was never in the east village.

Original spot was in greenwich village at the corner of Carmine and Bleeker.  Then they moved up Carmine St. a few storefronts.  A few years ago they started expanding, I know one is on 14th street just off of 3rd ave and one is just south of Times Sq.  Not sure what others exist.  I do think it Joe's is one of the best slice shops in Manhattan

I've said this in a previous thread before, but NY style slice pizza is decent, but its never fresh.  I've had countless slices from all the well known spots in NYC (including Joe's) and its all the same: the pizza has been sitting out for god knows how long, then when you order they try to bring the pizza back to life like the bride of Frankenstein by throwing it back in the oven for a couple mins.  The pizza is decent, but tastes noticeably "left-over".

If you like Neapolitan style, Neapapali's is the place to go in A2. The head pizza chef, Joe, knows from pizza! Only made better by the small bar inside with a great MI beer selection. A good place to run into football players too. Modest prices, friendly, quality ingredients and toppings, good place for kids, and close to campus. Split a pizza and a big greek salad with the wife & kid and you're out the door happy for $16. Not great for takeout though, this pizza is far better hot out of the oven.

For generic takeout/delivery, my money's on Hello Faz on the west side of town. Amazing name, decent pizza, zero pretensiousness. Faz having been a non-pork eater, the meats are all beef, chicken, or turkey-based. The tomato sauce has flavor, which is all too rare.

For Detroit-style I vote Jet's.

Holy fuckballs I am now officially hungry.

Alright hot stuff. Tell me a better place for Detroit style (other than Buddy's) within 10 miles of downtown A2. I will pick it up Sunday along with a Jets with the same toppings and do a blind taste test with the other poor souls watching the Lions game at my house. If your choice wins I'll upvote 10 of your previous posts and add one here professing your superiority in both Pizza wisdom and penis size. Call it the pizza/penis challenge.

I’m pretty sure Supinos is just a knockoff of Tomatoes Apizza in Farmington Hills.  They’re also in Birmingham now.  For my money that’s the best pie in town.

And anyone mentioning Jets in a best pizza thread should be disqualified from all future food threads...

To be fair and put it in context, I reference Jet's only as being the best of a particular, very specific style, and even in that limited context, I'd rather have Buddy's if it didn't cost $25 for a large pie.

Fwiw, Tomatoes Apizza is for shitty suburban Detroiters who say they're"from Detroit," have a genuine fondness for Troy and wax nostalgic about leisurely summer weekends at the Somerset Collection.

Eating Joe's as I type this

It's a good slice.  Best of those around my work, but don't see why it's legendary.

Di Fara's...that is worthy of hype

Detroit style pizza is popular now in NYC.

Emily's version is every bit as good as what they serve you at Buddy's. In otherwords...GREAT

As a New Yorker I confidently say that Joe's is vastly overrated. It's turned into a tourist trap with now overpriced pizza. Prince St Pizza is the best in the city, though it is becoming a tourist trap now so catch them before their quality goes down hill.
