Ant Wright: "Juwan Howard is another Patrick Ewing situation"

Submitted by 1201 on May 17th, 2019 at 3:18 PM

Ewing was an NBA assistant for 14 years before taking the Georgetown job (his alma mater) and he hasn't done well there. Wright thinks Shaka would do well here with the right assistants around him. Thoughts?

Juwan continuing to make Michigan a national power and is the right guy for the job

All I see is a Patrick Ewing situation

If I’m wrong I’ll gladly eat crow.. but if I’m right (per usual), Twitter will be more entertaining than ever https://t.co/nCLL9QlUfI

Ant is a college hoops dude against the NBA assistant route. Don’t entirely agree with him on this one but that makes some sense

Main difference to me is Georgetown was the only place of any significance that would hire Ewing as a head coach. NBA teams weren’t interested no matter how long he serves as an assistant. The Knicks wouldn’t even interview him for the job. Juwan is held in much higher regard by basketball people in general.

I can sort of see what he's saying - I'm a bit wary of hiring a guy who's been away from college for 25 years - but Ewing doesn't seem to be doing badly, all things considered.

If I see a dead crow on the road, i will pick it up, put in my basement freezer, and someday send to Ant so that he can fulfill his promise.

You are ruining Ant Wright for me.

He's just a guy with an opinion. He's funny and great on Twitter, but his opinion is nowhere near a thread worthy subject.

He's right, other than the fact that Juwan and Patrick are completely different people, 2019 UM and 2017 GTown are completely different situations, and it's still too early to tell what the Ewing "situation" is.

Ant Wright is GARBAGE! He is a big mouth who is just Twitter Famous. He barely played at Michigan and ended up transferring because he was NOT good enough to get on the court under Beilein. His Opinion is not worth anyone's time. Carry On and GO BLUE.

I think Juwan could possibly work here, but he's a highly risky pick IMO.  With no head coaching experience and no coaching experience of any kind in college, it's very possible the job could just overwhelm him.  The HC in college basketball at a major program like Michigan has a huge number of demands on his time.  Someone who has no experience with balancing all of them is at a higher risk of failure.  I'm guessing Warde knows this and is conducting the search accordingly.  I think it's still worth interviewing him for a number of reasons.

I don't disagree necessarily. Yaklich and Washington may not have any HC experience, but neither does Howard. Yaklich and Washington at least have collegiate coaching experience, and Yaklich especially knows how to recruit. Does Howard know how to? Does he care to? I don't know.

Howard is essentially the NBA version of Yaklich and Washington. Has been a good assistant with the time he's been given, but has no HC experience. In my mind, tie goes to the guy(s) who have college experience AND recruiting prowress. Just because Howard has done well in the NBA doesn't mean he'll do well in college. Yaklich/Washington will at least know, from watching Beilein directly, what goes into the job, the demands, everything.

To me, Juwan Howard is simply a "high risk, uncertain reward" type of pick, if it came to that. We talked a bit about this in the thread where everyone discussed the need to have experience at all in the job, and I maintain that you really do need to consider someone with some manner of experience first. That said, I am not totally against the idea - I think that, if it came to a point where they did hire Howard, the key would be having a staff that can fill in the experience gaps and at a place like Michigan, you still might get it to work even at that, but there's a lot more risk in doing it like this, IMHO.

Ant Wrights opinion isn't any more valid than anyone elses here So it doesn't deserve its own post

Ant Wright is shilling for Shaka Smart. Any time someone tweets at Ant about Shakas record or negatives about Shaka Ant is unable to refute what they say. All he does is trash talk the other candidates

Anybody who WANTS Shaka has no clue what theyre talking about. Probably hasn't even watched a single Texas game. Probably is only going based on the "Havoc defense" days which are long past

I don't follow Georgetown basketball much, but is "not doing well" accurate for Ewing?

Georgetown had been doing ok under JTIII but was struggling to continually be good. They went 14-18 the year before Ewing got there, then 15-15, then 19-14 this past season. Not gangbusters by any means, but they haven't gotten worse and were starting at a much lower point than Michigan is currently at.

Recruiting wise they were 1 spot lower than Michigan last year in Ewing's first full go around. That's not to say anything like that would be acceptable at Michigan, but this isn't the old Georgetown that Ewing has torn apart. He's also 10 years older than Howard and always struck me as a little old school and generally not in great health to take on some of the things necessary to be successful in college.

My son is a UM alum, currently at Georgetown Law. So I have paid some attention to Georgetown basketball this season.

Patrick Ewing inherited a mess and has improved it. He has also started to recruit well. James Akinjo and Mac McClung played pretty well as freshmen. He has a couple of 3 star big men coming in next year. Both have potential if he can develop them. The days of Georgetown being an easy place to recruit are long gone.

If Juwan is as good or just a little better than Ewing he will be fine, as he will be starting in a much better place.

The angst around here after just a few days is unbelievable. Anyone who thinks Warde is just sitting on his ass and doing the bare minimum is a grade A idiot. Let's see what happens next week. If this search has gone nowhere a week from today, then OK, Warde deserves the flak. But I strongly suspect that won't be the case. If we don't have a coach, we will be close to having one. Then the negative critiques of the new hire can start, and surely will no matter who it is.

I don't think people assume Warde is sitting around not doing anything.  I would have preferred that he would have hired Yaklich on Tuesday so that he could be sitting around doing nothing.

It's the fact that he's doing a bunch of unnecessary things that has people annoyed.

Michigan just can't get over it's need for legacy and dwelling in the past.

Beilein had no connection to Michigan before he came, and he proceeded to kick ass like no other before him.

So WTF?

Why the instance on resurrecting zombies of the past?  I just don't get it.

Just hire the best damn guy you can to coach Michigan basketball. Stop looking back.

I am sorry, but the best coach Michigan can hire is NOT Juwan Howard.

No sane power D1 coach would have recruited him. Guy screamed MAC level. Actually struggled at Toledo. Of course that was right around the time Tommy Turtleneck was bringing in such MAC level talents as Jerrett Smith, Kle’n Morris, and Rob Coleman.
