Status of the B1G
As I'm watching the M game, I see Nebraska vs. Penn State is on the B1G Network. Outside of M and OSU, these are the two biggest "name" teams in the conference. Relegated to being shown on the conference network. This would seem to be an obvious indictment, especially as it relates to national appeal, of the status of B1G football.

kinda sucks.....unfortunately. Michigans rise back to prominance is vital for the conference. Also Urbz was right - the BIG needs to recruit better.

This manball mentality makes me think that we are just becoming another Iowa

I remember there was a UM/MSU game on BTN. They are in contract to receive SOME marquee games. This may be one of those.

Interesting point. I was not aware of an arrangement like that. I thought ABC/ESPN/ESPN2 always had first pick.
November 23rd, 2013 at 4:52 PM ^
It rotates, with BTN getting first choice a few weeks a year. So some weeks games you'd expect on ABC/ESPN are on BTN and vice versa.
and as others have noted: MSU and Wisky are on ESPN today, w/ OSU on ABC. Like it or not, those are the top 3 teams in the conference. History means diddly squat in terms of who gets what slots at this time of year. Jockeying for the BW3 and Texas Bowls is hardly a marquee matchup.

The conference is actually pretty strong. I think the bigger problem is that it's boring.
November 23rd, 2013 at 2:38 PM ^
...you must be thinking about basketball.

I was not, no.

The conference is pretty weak. Who is nationally relevant in this league? Ohio State and only as a red-headed stepchild
November 23rd, 2013 at 2:57 PM ^
Your definition of nationally relevant must be so narrow that only about 4 teams fit it at the moment. How many Big Teams can you expect at once, then?

I was thinking of top 10 teams. Wisconsin is not there, MSU is right on the cusp I suppose (sigh). But Ohio State is the only team all year who has been in any sort of seriousy BCS title / top 5 discussion. Everyone else pretty much eliminated themselves within the first 4 weeks of the season.

Are we just going to flat out ignore Michigan State and Wisconsin?
November 23rd, 2013 at 3:04 PM ^
So many people on this blog just flat out refuse to acknowledge MSU as anything more than a MAC caliber team outside of the week after we lose to them.
November 23rd, 2013 at 3:30 PM ^
I think the Top 3 in the Big Ten (OSU, MSU, Wisconsin), could definitely hold their own against the Top 3 of any other conference.
The problem, is that after those 3, there's a drop off.

NOT strong. At best it's the third best Conf behind the SEC and PAC 12. Maybe they are better than the Big 12, but probably not. Who do you think they are better than?
November 23rd, 2013 at 2:59 PM ^
I have been watching other conferences. I would say we're around PAC 12 level.

Ohio State is the only program willing to do what it takes to compete nationally.
November 23rd, 2013 at 2:59 PM ^
B1G sucks and it all started with this ridiculous logo.
November 23rd, 2013 at 3:54 PM ^
Looking around, that puts us on par with the Big 12 and ACC. Yes we're behind the SEC, but we have been for half a decade and who hasn't? Heck the SEC is behind Alabama. I don't think the SEC East is all that but the west is very good.
Pac12 is probably ahead of us too - but not by much. Oregon is good, and Stanford is talented but flawed - I think they're not that far off from Sparty and Ohio. Wiscy played to the wire with ASU, and UCLA is in the same realm as well.

Without a strong Michigan and OSU the B1G is just not a good conference and it will garner no respect.
