Very OT: Job Searching

Submitted by JimBobTressel on

Hey guys,

I know that this is firmly off topic, and probably not something to discuss on a football blog, but the folks here are extremely knowledgeable in many areas, and I could use some assistance.

I'm a recent Michigan engineering graduate who's currently living in north Florida, and after spending close to two years working in marketing startups that went under, the search for a steady 9-5 position isn't going all that well. I've tried submitting resumes and applications to job sites like CareerBuilder, Monster, etc. and not much luck so far.

I'm polishing up my LinkedIn profile right now, and I'm going to see what I can find on there. Was just wondering if anyone was in my shoes and had some good tips. Unemployment sucks.

EDIT: Yes, willing to relocate to anywhere necessary. Current location is Jacksonville FL. Majored in Industrial Engineering. Currently open to IT, Programming, and Engineering jobs (preferably around entry level).

Corporate Recruiter here for a large automotive supplier in West Michigan and I recruit engineers. I'd be happy to help you. Let me know and we can figure out a way to connect.

I am pretty sure we are already connected on LinkedIn. I actually passed your profile over to a couple groups later today. Hopefully it's you, otherwise some guy I think is you is getting some looks.

Declaring late in my college career as a Marketing/Accounting double major at GVSU made it damn near impossible for me to secure an internship while in school as I couldn't afford to do an unpaid internship. I've done the LinkedIn thing and try to keep my accounts professional. I just need that one break into a professional job to get my career going? Any other suggestions for a hopeful businessman? I'm wide open to the idea of relocation. Thanks guys. Any private information can get emailed to me at:

I have a close friend, who owns a recruiting firm. I mentioned you and your post. He sounds interested, and might be able to help you. Let me know if you interested.

I am about to graduate with my MA degree in History and I am trying to find me one of those jobs things. I too have been pushing my linkedIn profile ( linkedin.com/in/hiremetoday ). One bit of advice that has gotten me the most feed back and two interviews (albeit one that I turned down after finding out more about the job) : folllow up email after submitting my resume.

I've called for a few of my submissions too, but the person I contact (usually the hiring manager) is suprised that I managed to figure out who is actually doing the hiring (I just askthe secretary) and they seem annoyed that I would call them. With the emails, though, I am suprised how mny of them send back notes giving me a time line of when to expect a call should one come.

On a side note, anyone with advice on how to get into Freelance writing?

Is to try to get out there and network as much as possible. So for example:
Connect with people on LinkedIn and just ask them about their job what they do what they like etc. then when you get done with them ask if they know of anyone else you could talk to that would be good.

It takes a lot longer so you might need a part time job but that has been the best way to get something good is to meet people and get on their good side.

I think from the LinkedIn Michigan group, and have noticed that John Deere advertised "alot" for engineering postions. I was on the lookout for engineering opportunties for my niece, which is why I noticed.

I received rejections for so long until I realized that the problems were with my resume and not with me. What can a student who worked part-time with his father in the workshop write about himself? Of course, you need to get a good sample resume first. Better to know a professional who can write you a resume. Or you can order it at one of the best resume writing service 2020.
