Interesting Picture Pages on NW Blog
Its a good read about the 50 yard TD completion by IL at the start of the 4th Q.

What I found interesting was the first picture - its 2nd and 2 and what is notable is the 10 yards cushion available to WRs - a free 1st down if you will.
Unfortunately, it remind me so much of our defense last year.

Wow...it wouldn't be too difficult to check to a three yard hitch on the outside WR's. Then again, on second and two, it it usually a "go deep" down, especially on the 50 yard line and in.
I'd be interested to see what type of cusion is given up on third downs.

wow, a quick throw to either receiver and you get an auto 5yds if not more. That is way too much cushion on a 2nd and 2.

It is possible he has only seen the ND game in which case it is understandable he thinks we are a jump ball offense.

Well, Auburn had the Gulf Coast Offense, so we could call it the Mid-West Coast Offense
However, considering the lack of West Coast principles on display as of right now, I would like to suggest we call it the Spread 'n Coast.

So...KITTENS!!!

We play 'Nardball. Its because it is rare that such a special player comes along (Tebow, Reggie Bush, Woodson) that we mold our schemes and packages around this player, therefore abandoning traditional thinking and play calling to utilize this individuals skills.
Of course I made up 'Nardball...but only because I haven't heard anyone else call it anything different. Elements of Spread, manball and gotcha...

Nice.

Yeah, but why bother throwing the bubble for first down when, even with that giant cushion, you can run right by the CBs for a touchdown?

I wonder how good their CBs are.
Also interesting is that Minnesota basically did this against USC because they could not cover anyone, http://mgoblog.com/content/preview-minnesota-2011. We were able to exploit that with short passes that got Denard comfortable and in a rhythm. I fully expect to see some of that again this Saturday.

Wait- shouldn't it be a good thing that their defense looks like ours last year?

Yup - its good for the coming Saturday. What is unfortunate is that just last year that was us.
Nothing is making me more positive about the future of Hoke-Mattison-Borges regime than the improvement in defense.

Evert week that goes by gives me more hope and evidence that Hoke and co are the right choices for the long haul.

Pretty hilarious that he describes our offense as a 'jump-ball offense'
LOL sorry dude, we'll be running just a bit more.

I happen to know one of the cornerbacks VERY well (Jordan Mabin) and tried like hell to get Lloyd to offer him back when he was coming out of High School. I can tell you that he and his dad (former CB in college himself) are very frustrated with the "bend but don't break" defensive philosophy Northwestern is employing. He would love to play press coverage but isn't allowed to per their defensive coordinator's system.
