TomVH: Allen Gant Offered
Ohio DB Allen Gant received an offer from Michigan today. He was expecting to have to wait until camp to get an offer, but it came early for him.
I talked to Coach Borges over the phone and we were able to talk about what they thought of me. They thought they they liked me enough and they were able to give me an offer. They see me as a safety. I'm very excited and thankful that they offered. As of now I'm going to enjoy the process. I'll try to make it up there hopefully in the next couple weeks.
With Gant being a Michigan legacy this is obviously a big offer for him. We'll see what happens when he makes his visit.
Anyone else would be a Michigan legacy.
His father, Tony, played for Bo, 81-85, which included a medical redshirt after he broke his leg on a punt return against Wisconisn in 1984 (I think I have the years right).
He's also C-Wood's cousin.
If Allen has half the instincts and field presence his father Tony had, then this is a great prospect and opportunity for both sides. I think having legacies on the team is ultra important. If someone's son is a player, it's best he plays for Michigan, imo.
I'm not a big fan of this offer, even if he is a legacy. Something seems fishy about it, though... They must have got some news on one or more other recruits:
a) Someone else isn't coming for sure, so they need to offer someone new
b) Someone else is about to commit, and the coaches want to be able to say, "Hey, we offered, but your spot's taken now."
We've only offered a few safeties, and Gant isn't one of the top 5 or 6 safeties in the country by a long shot.
Good point, and I thought it was a combination of your (2) below and the desire to offer a kid who's father and cousin played for Michigan. By making the offer, the coaches also continue with to back up their statements to kids that we want you, but we're not going to hold the offer out to your time schedule.

I particularly enjoy the commentary on Joe Bolden, which I believe to be a little over the top. Saying that however, this is a Buckeye, and we've come to expect classless, over the top statements.
I think the writer forgets what it's like to be a 16 or 17 year old kid. Of course a young, testosterone filled football player is going to use a snub from Ohio State as motivation. It's hardly anything new or profound. Athletes have been saying that sort of thing for as long as there's been competition.
2011 is not only the "Return of Sparty Mediocrity" but the year of constant recruiting justifications from Buckeys and Spartys everywhere.
I'm amazed by some of the negative comments concerning Allen Gant not worthy of an offer. That means that you have never seen him play. Do you actually think the coaching staff would waste a scholarship on a kid who could not play (regardless who is dad, cousin, uncle, etc. is)? According to his Dad (who laughed at me when I told him about some of these blogs) Allen is not ranked high in the National Recruiting Services because he only attended one camp and zero combines. Rivals ranks him as a receiver and not a safety. Gant is a tremendous player and I would put him as one of the top 3 safeties in OH. Go to www.msrohio.com and find Mr. McCallister's blog concerning Gant.
