Appreciate the heads up…

Appreciate the heads up...was waiting to pull the trigger on gear (already ordered copies of the front page Daily issues) and the price drop made the long sleeve I got more sensible

Living in Arizona...and that…

Living in Arizona...and that is just not true (and I have my Master's from ASU).  ASU has been excellent at gaming rankings in certain areas so they can advertise as such...but ASU is not strong overall...they have a few elite programs (their sustainability school is amazing) but they also accept SOOOOO many people and build enrollment in ways that allows many students to simply pad the university coffers in exchange for a degree.  I know that happens many places, but ASU is a pretty extreme example of it.  Now, the perception is different (there was a time not to long ago when many strong HS graduates would not consider ASU and that has definitely changed due to creation of ASU's Honors College) but ASU is not an academic institution on par overall  with the other schools discussed here

Not on the court...on the…

Not on the court...on the court he is a top 10 (15 at least) all timer...who plays hard at both ends and can score in more ways than all but a couple NBA players in history.  Off court yeah...but never a bad teammate in the locker room (unless I am missing something that slipped my mind...which well, I am sure the internet will let me know in 4...3...2...1)

I'm a Suns fan and loved…

I'm a Suns fan and loved Mikail and liked Cam...but I do this deal over and over.  And I would have been OK with the Suns making nothing but a Crowder deal this go round.  Those 4 picks are not going to be top 10...or top 15.    None of the seven players (crowder, Bridges, Johnson, 4 picks)  are close to KD even considering the player he is today.  People forget Booker is only 26...and they can easily get out of CP3s contract this summer...and they have Durant for 3 more years.  Yes he is aging and will have times out with injury...but when CP3 doesn't need pressure to score he will be even more effective.  And Ayton is gonna have so much room in the paint now he is going to get 10 points off easy dunks every night.  The Suns, as much as I loved "the twins" were not going further with the current lineup.  This one?  This one is favorite in the west today...and a much better playoff roster than last two years.  And getting TJ Warren for forward depth is sneaky smart part of this deal as well

And only one Buckeye on the…

And only one Buckeye on the list...when was the last time we outnumbered them on something like this?  (not that these lists are be all end all of course).  The rivalry might not have felt too different after last year, but it FEELS different now.  No longer wishing and hoping (which to be honest, even after last year I was doing a  little).  Those 12-0 predictions of next year don't seem too ludicrous.

I see him play every home…

I see him play every home game (as mentioned in thread where he committed as well as one other I work at school he plays at).  Hard worker and a physical specimen for sure...whole team had a bit of a disappointing year...his stats weren't amazing, but there were a couple game where you totally see why he is so widely sought after.  He would be a huge get for Rhule

I teach at the school in AZ…

I teach at the school in AZ where OSU's big 2024 QB recruit is coming from...my daughter attends the same school and sits next to him in science class.  I keep telling her to just hum the Victors near him.  I'll check with her at end of day to see if she did.  If not, she's out of the family.

Why the hell would a 16 year…

Why the hell would a 16 year old MSU fan call his handle "old take sex posed"?  Are the octogenarians doing it in some old way I'm not familiar with?  (Sorry...when the game recap is funny but there's no real additional insight to offer on such a clear set of observations, that's all I gots to add...thanks for indulging my 12 year old boy)

Agree with prior post that…

Agree with prior post that encapsulates EQ and what made me love it so much very well (pretty much same era as well : 89-93)

I think every dorm claims…

I think every dorm claims that...I know East Quad did

God I loved that pinball…

God I loved that pinball machine...I was there 89-93 so you probably made me favorite sandwich many times.  Grilled cheese: swiss on wheat with a  smear of mustard.

I lived in EQ all four years…

I lived in EQ all four years (2 as a resident and two as an RF [East Quad's need to be "weird" leading to calling them "Resident Fellows" instead of RAs.])  Loved the Halfway Inn (or Half-ass as we called it).  And can 100% confirm the idea of conenctions...it was semiofficial until my last year that if we knew of kids smoking in their rooms we were just to tell them to put a towel under the door and ignore it...until my senior years and their were rumors of the DEA coming in...a lot of toilets flushed that night..shocked the pipes didn't burst.  Oh...and my roommate freshmen year grew pot in our closet under a grow light...he said it was terrible.).  Was also one of the many dorms in the late 80s/early 90s that claimed Madonna as past resident

I actually owned Extreme III…

I actually owned Extreme III (Nuno can play) so it was just something I was aware of...but I think any reasonable person would leave Gary off the list.  There are some who prefer Sammy, but no one rightly claims Gary.  Not dumping on him, just not even remotely VH's best work

I wait, I wait, I wait, I…

I wait, I wait, I wait, I wait

You left one off for VH!  (I…

You left one off for VH!  (I am shocked..shocked I say... that you ignored Gary Cherone after he left Extreme to begin what is clearly Van Halen's greatest era ever).  In all honesty though., DLR probably had the worst "chops" of all three, but I would pick his work in VH over the other two any day.  Just like in sports, talent alone is only part of the equation.  Whether it was his energy, the way he synergized with the other band members or whatnot...or maybe his self awareness of his limitations...but give me their first album or 1984  any day.

Letterkenny for the win!  To…

Letterkenny for the win!  To be fair, another great banter show.  The punning off names alone is worth the entire show (and the rest of it ain't bad).  Shoresy shows some promise as well...but doesn't seem quite as good yet

So yes to WKRP.   Les…

So yes to WKRP.   Les Nessman (sp?) narrating turkeys slamming into parked cars after dropped from a helicopter never gets old.  I think it's the most consistent thing to get me to laugh out loud...Johnny Fever saying "booger" on air....him taking a sobriety test and getting better drunk (I know why it would never/should never air today)...classic.  I think as a sports guy I love Les...him saying Chi Chi Rodriguez, being called on it and STILL saying it wrong is another laugh out loud moment all the time

Thank God someone else…

Thank God someone else mentioned Buffy...my wife dragged me into it, but I love "banter" shows (Brockmire being one of the best examples I can think of) and it nailed "banter".    I remember when I would discuss it with colleagues and know they would scoff...but it deserves consideration.  I knew someone else would put Simpsons (above)...now if Scrubs can just get some love.  (The arc with Brendan Fraiser was near perfect).

So...when I saw this story…

So...when I saw this story on SI I clicked just for the dose of BPONE I needed for the day...and then it said he will play at Chandler High next year...and I'm like "Wait a minute I TEACH at Chandler High!".  So long story short...he will flunk senior English and never see the shoe (I also announce our football games, so I might be able to plant a seed of doubt or two through the PA whenever he throws a pick) *tents fingers* ...Excellllllent.

So....I was 14 when Goonies…

So....I was 14 when Goonies came out...my brother and I rode our bikes in the Arizona sun to be first in line...we were shocked no one else was lined up to see it.  I was so excited...and so utterly let down by the end.  I just don't get the reverence for it.  I know I'll be negged to oblivion but it's just a couple memorable lines and spawned a great band (Love Chunk No Captain Chunk!) but it  just...isn't...good.  not even in an 80s way.  I truly think it is one the most overrated pics ever....somebody explain why I'm wrong...(really...I wanna know)

Now...all the love for 3 O'Clock High...yes please.

Looks like Canada is about…

Looks like Canada is about to go out to Sweden as well...both teams out in the quarters?  has Canada ever not made it to the semis?  (Too busy/lazy at work to check...thanks to someone who inevitably will!).  I guess for U of M this went as well as it could since all players have a better chance to return/get acclimated for rest of season.

Totally true, that's why I…

Totally true, that's why I prefaced it as I did....Just was talking about the UofM experience in a more general sense but realize that took it more OT

I largely agree for athletes…

I largely agree for athletes...but as someone who got one of the less prestigious degrees (as they say in Avenue Q "What do you do with a BA in English?") just having U of M on my resume DID open some doors that I don't think would have been otherwise.  The name recognition does have some valuable cache even for the "downmajors" if you are in a field where credentialing matters AT ALL.

That said, as much as I love…

That said, as much as I love Michael Keaton, I rewatched Gung Ho recently.  That movie (and his performance in it) has not aged well at all. I hope when I rewatch Mr. Mom someday I don't have the same feeling.  Realizing the crazy range of work he's done and wondering why he isn't given quite the same respect as Hanks...I think their careers are kinda similar.

I loved Birdman...the ending…

I loved Birdman...the ending works and only works because of everything that comes before it (which I think is very very hard to do in any storytelling format)..and I think Michael Keaton is crazy underrated (Even though I know he IS highly regarded)

I don't hate the NFL's…

I don't hate the NFL's system now...asking for a defensive stop of <75 yards is not unreasonable.  That said, if there was a change, I'd love to see the Ravens' "spot and choose" proposal.  Basically, one team picks anywhere on the field where the ball is placed.  Then the other gets to decide offense or defense...so much strategy and resultant armchair quarterbacking:

The 1989 Fiesta Bowl.

I…

The 1989 Fiesta Bowl.

I was a senior in high school in Mesa, AZ and my mom's job got us tickets to the Fiesta Bowl every year...I saw the Penn State Miami de facto NC game and many other great ones.  As I likely inaccurately remember it, in 1989 the game ended just a touch early, and we got home in time to watch half time of the Rose Bowl.  If that mythology is a bit off...I guess I just was watching the Rose Bowl as normal and the story loses a bit of its romance.

Both my uncles had gone to U of M in the seventies and I was a fan...and I knew it was a good school but I wasn't looking for an academic challenge.  I had applied to big state schools with decent but not great academic programs focused on writing (Iowa, U Wash, Syracuse).  I was pretty set on going to Washington because I wanted to live in Seattle.

But I was also a marching band geek in high school...and the Rose Bowl half time actually showed the band's show that day....and when I saw U of M's 225 do entries onto the field I knew as I have known few things in my life I wanted to be part of that.  I started working on my application almost as soon as the show ended.  I mailed it off, with rushed letters of rec from my teachers,  on Feb. 14, 1989.  Somehow I got in.

I picked U of M for the flimsiest of reasons...but it worked out beautifully...including my time in the Residential College, as an earlier poster hinted at.  And, most importantly, then to be M-Go Wife was a twirler in the band at the time.  Best decision I ever made (wife first of all...but school as well!)

As I teach juniors and seniors getting ready for their own decisions of when to go to college, I only hope their decision will turn out as well as mine.

That's not accurate...Jim…

That's not accurate...Jim McMahon was most certainly not LDS....while you do have to abide by their code (which, at least until recently if not still,  meant no shorts) you do not have to be LDS

You set too high a standard…

You set too high a standard this year with all those that came out early.  But in all seriousness, we kid 'cause we love.  Take care of the fam...I know what it's like when only one person had COVID and everyone else has to lock themselves up....but hell yeah I want that UFR!

I have now seen evidence of…

I have now seen evidence of the folding chairs...it is like seeing  the burning bush or something...it is almost evidence of the divine

One note...we did try to…

One note...we did try to look used first but are looking at a relatively new model and there is no used inventory...as indicated by some below, the demand is hitting used hard as well.

Mgowife finally convinced me…

Mgowife finally convinced me to make the jump to a (shudder) minivan.  We were prepared to wait until December since not in immediate need of vehicle and we'll be passing down a car to our daughter when she hits 16 this December.  Went to the dealer and they had none of the model (in any trim) we wanted...said we could preorder but didn't even have one to test drive. Found a test drive at different dealer and went back and the ones we could have preordered were gone...we preordered a different one for Mid June.  Through costco pricing we were able to get under sticker but by less than if we'd bought a week earlier (the dealer we tested at would not do costco pricing and was not moving below sticker at all).  We're convinced prices are going up and wanted to buy now

Loved it in the early 90s…

(double post...delete...must have been all the sauce dripping off my fingers that led me to hit return twice)

Loved it in the early 90s…

Loved it in the early 90s...love it today.  Whenever we go back it is the one must have above all others.  Was there for the Iowa game last year and talked to owner for a while...know he was thinking of selling.  Great guy and I'm glad the town was able to put his kids and their kids and their kids' kids through college.

I know why most people say…

sorry for double post (delete)

I know why most people say…

I know why most people say its The Wire...I watched both but for me it's Breaking Bad and its not even close.  Breaking Bad is in my top 5, maybe top 3, all time.  It is the perfect example of my favorite kind of show...focuses on a small group of characters and gets to know them intimately by moving slowly though story lines in a way almost no other show does.  It lets things build instead of acting like the payoff needs to be in one (or even two) episodes after the issue is developed. As well, the evolution of Walt is something I think is fascinating and could not have been accomplished by many actors...as good as the cast of the wire is, I don;t think anybody can touch Bryan Cranston

OK...first off as a…

OK...first off as a disclaimer considering the "no classics" thing, i'm an IB/AP lit instructor so I need to give a few recommendations that are "contemporary classics":

-Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Adichie (a wonderfully disturbing book about a young girl growing up in Nigeria with a father who is one of the most complex characters I can think of ) -

- anything by Haruki Murakami...he's Japan's answer to the magical realism of Marquez and combines humor/fantasy/horror elements in ways that i've never read before (although I would recommend "the Elephant Vanishes" as more accessible).

-Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried is a fantastic Vietnam war collection based off is own experiences (I think)

I would also recommend anything by Michael Chabon (In order: The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (If you love comics/superhero go this), The Yiddish Policeman's Union (great historical fiction about an autonomous Jewish state being set up in Alaska post WWII), or Telegraph Avenue (two guys resisting gentrification in the Telegraph Avenue section of Berkeley...heavy on Star Trek and Jazz references))

And, since the scifi fantasy bent is strong here I'd recommend Tad Williamson's Dragonbone Chair fantasy series or his Otherland Sci-fi series (good VR fiction).  The White Gold Wielder series by Stephen R Donaldson is Breaking Bad meets Lord Of the Rings (Cancer stricken transported to fantasy world where his cancer is cured but he never fits in)

Wolf, eagle, dragon, giant! …

Wolf, eagle, dragon, giant!  Iceland is now my favorite squad after the USMNT.  (I know I know, most OT thing in the post but watch the video and you'll be on board...and that crest is amazing!)

We had resisted for my 11 Y…

We had resisted for my 11 Y/O daughter for a while, but got her MInecraft Bedorck for the PS4 thru digital download during lockdown since it allowed her to connect with friends.  Was a great decision, and except for one issue with the loading screen freezing that required a reinstall has been smooth.  She plays every day...has been a  mental lifesaver during lockdown for a very very social kiddo  I did not have PS Plus before downloading so we did need to sign up for that so she could communicate with friends...with the free games (Drake alone was enough) was totally worth it.  (My only disappointment was how nonplussed she was by the video of the big house on minecraft posted last week)  So, to review, do it...and digital is way to go.

Well...the school I attended…

Well...the school I attended, not so much. We won two state titles in AZ when I was there (in the band at least!) but we've fallen off the map.  But, I'll claim the school I currently teach at: Chandler High School...we've won the last four state titles in the largest classification and have put players like Cam Jordan (brilliant, brilliant kid) Brett Hundley, Paul Perkins, Adam Archuletta and a few others in the NFL.  We had the 3rd overall pick a few years ago (Dion Jordan) but he didn't amount to too much.  We can claim Terrell Suggs for his sophomore and junior years, but he transferred to our rival for is senior year (long story)..so yeah...the school I went to for four years, meh.  the school I've taught at for 26...that's the one I want!

(No subject)

for years... I called him the coolest man alive. There were musicians I like better. there were definitely actors I liked better. There were people whose androgynous style was probably better. But I don't know if there was ever a better popular artist.
on a purely selfish level.... please yes. I'm in the Phoenix area and the chance two games of u of m hockey a year makes me happy....as to if it's good in the big picture...well, that's for tomorrow
ESPN Live?

If I have an X-Box, is it going to be on ESPN Live regardless of where I live?  (I'm in phoenix, so I think I'm getting UT normally)

Not a big Lion's fan...

but I teach at the high school that Dion went to out in Arizona.  I spot at the football games as well, and while I have no great insight on what kind of pro he will be, I hope he makes it.  What he went through his senior with the burns he suffered (if you've never read the story, here's a link, http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nfl--perseverance-leads-oregon-s-dion-jordan-to-brink-of-nfl-after-accident-almost-ended-his-dream-023331504.html) and how it affected his recruitment really makes me want to see the kid succeed.  I've never heard anything but good about him from the people who worked with him...

while you're entitled to your opinion....

Your mindset about the popularity of soccer isn't current...MLS's average attendance is the 4th best of any US pro league...it's ahead of the NHL among others...

You're not making me mad or anything, I just want to make sure that people who haven't made up their mind on the issue yet have the right info...

So...

I teach high school English (we're actually in class now...shhh...don't tell), so I've read a lot of this list, and I have taught Eyes.  It's not my favorite to be sure (that'd be Grapes of Wrath...don't even get me started on how absolutely perfect that book is...which is why I was crushed that Staples gives it to OU on the most ridiculously obvious/surface level comparison)...ours is kinda a superficial comparison as well...what might have been better is to discuss how for years Eyes was ignored (our loss of our past stature) , and only when a devotee of the book, Alice Walker, (Brady Hoke) traveled back to literally the author's grave (return to past tradition) , did the book takes it's "rightful" place in the canon (our return to prominence)

Maybe it was just out in the AZ ...

where I was at someone else's house (but not yours)....but I thought the 7 nation army thing was ridiculous (in a good way...as the kids are saying today  "it was sick")...I was adamantly against rawk (I am former MMB) until I saw that, but that did work...

and....

A: Alabama

B: Stanford

C: TCU

D:ND

E: USC

unranked:  Texas

This is a bit different than what you want...

but from my past knowledge of the prem, these are pretty accurate...it actually has piqued my interest in following Everton
