A lot depends on the last name to pair with the first names. Also the names of the other kiddos.
I'd go with Woodson and Wheatley. Won't seem obvious to their peers as both are already retired.
Thanks to Hoke, Brady is no longer feasible.

Great post JoeyB. You have objectively pulled in a ton of useful details.
In my opinion, "deserve's got everything to do with it." Because regardless of rankings, eye test, game control, or whatever other criteria one prefers, all of that may end up being wrong when the teams actually play. None of it is an exact science, and all of it faces major sample size challenges. There are 129 teams in FBS, and they don't all play one another. Choosing the four best must inherently mean the most deserving because anything else is just a hypothetical based on shaky analysis.
It's complicated enough to value what "deserving" means, but at least it values actual results, not feelings or guesses.

While one never knows what’s true about Harbaugh’s injury comments, I beleive he later reentered the game in the second half last week.

You should send it to Joel Klatt for his next rant.
|11/06/2018 - 3:32am||Yes, I agree. I was…||
Yes, I agree. I was listening to the Northwestern game via the radio and it was not helpful in understanding what was happening on the field, which is kind of the point of a radio play-by-play. (I grew up on Wayne Larrivee doing Bears games in Chicago, and even as a kid I knew he was fantastic at his job. He painted the picture before every play, and kept pace with the action.)
[The only thing that I grew to like was Jon Jansen repeatedly saying "It's so FRUSTRating!" every time Michigan got a penalty or other similar mistake. At first, I was greatly put off by this kind of comment. He's supposed to provide insight, not his feelings, But then it quickly became endearing in a comical way.]

One thought in my mind was that if they had come into The Game 11-0, they would have felt less pressure to address their problems. That may be irrelevant if they cannot put away Nebraska even after Purdue plus a week off.

Wow that is indeed shady. Our guy just said "Do you think you could go and sell a product you believe in?" They let everyone start, but never tried to be sneaky about that. (Our guy was a very lousy manager, and he ended up getting moved or fired soon after because the team didn't perform.)
|11/03/2018 - 8:52am||I sold Cutco the summer…||
I sold Cutco the summer after my senior year of high school, with an attitude rather similar to Raj’s friend. While the company’s marketing is based on a bit of a scammy approach (get young adults to sell cutlery to their friends’ parents and their parents’ friends), I must defend them a bit here.
1. Aside from the overly optimistic hourly wage advetisements, they were honest about the expectations. You have to buy the sales kit (somewhat discounted). You start at only 10% comission, but sell enough and hang in there and it grows all the way up to 50%. (Very few hang in there, but again, they’re clear about the rules.)
2. The job made few requirements on my time. One or two team meetings per week. This was perfect for an 18 year old during summer.
3. I did gain skills which continue to help me 25 years later.
4. The knives are good. That sales kit is still pretty much all we use in my home to this day. A good investment on its own.
Why do I mention this? Raj’s attack on my long-ago employer now has me worried that Michigan will lose. That’s totally irrational. (Kind of like assuming cutting pennies in half make for a good sales pitch. Raj makes some good points.)

|11/01/2018 - 11:06am||If Michigan loses to Alabama…||
If Michigan loses to Alabama in the semi-final, I'll still come away very satisfied with the season, even if it's approaching a blowout. I realize that is aside from the point of the OP. But my point is making the Playoff is a key next step in the progress of the program. Therefore, better to ensure a clear path and no risks of 1-loss Alabama and LSU-or-UGA SEC champion both ahead of UM.
|10/31/2018 - 4:32am||It kind of doesn't matter,…||
It kind of doesn't matter, then. If ND wins out, they are above UM. If they lose one game, they are (perhaps) still above UM, depending on what that loss is. If they lose two, they are out. So it's not really worth worrying about. Assume they win out, and it means UM has to be among the remaining three teams. If they lose one game, that (perhaps) doesn't change. If they lose two, hooray another spot.

|10/25/2018 - 11:15am||I think the theory is more…||
I think the theory is more about overall team fatigue than injuries. People get injured in practice (or punching coffee tables), so that can also happen in any game. If the whole team is tired a week after a bruising game and then has to hit the road, that’s almost a double whammy.
|10/22/2018 - 2:52am||Great work, BronxBlue!
Great work, BronxBlue!
re: stubbing toes - this is part and parcel of college football. Even Nick Saban’s Alabama teams only have one undefeated season.
Along those lines, Michigan left a ton of potential points on the field in these last two games. I am not complaining about that. On one hand, it shows that the ceiling is yet higher. But also if balls had bounced differently, there was the chance for either to have been one of “those” games.
This team is tough as nails and doesn’t turtle. Hopefully they can approach that ceiling in this last third of the season. Regardless, they’re a joy to watch.

I wonder - he had a newborn baby during last season. Having recently exited that phase myself, it's pretty damn exhausting. (Of course, my 2yo is a feral animal, so things remain exhausting here.) Just an idea.

In hindsight, is Devin Bush the most important recruit of the Harbaugh era? Solomon, Gary, DPJ, Bredeson, and Ruiz were all very highly ranked (Bush was #312), but between beating out FSU for a Seminole legacy, his impact on the play of the defense, and the ability to recruit in his image, I cannot think of anyone who’s (so far) brought the program so much.

|09/04/2018 - 10:37am||Watched today, as I also…||
Watched today, as I also couldn't watch live. What I saw was significantly better than expected based on all the taeks. Yes, OTs are a huge issue that will derail the season if not somehow fixed.
I will say that this team fought to recover like last year's never did. (Winovich also addressed this in his post-game comments.) McKeon fumble vs MSU, Peters getting KO'd vs Wisconsin, pick dropped vs OSU, Hidgon fumble in the bowl game - after all of these moments, the team seemed to crumble. There were many similar moments in this one, and they didn't collapse.
Yes, they need to start winning more of these opportunities. But the game was nowhere near as bad as people are making it out to be. ND is not a superb team, but if this game were at home, I imagine it all would have flipped. Let's see.

Same old Braylon...
What about when he dropped a pass on 4th down, ending the game vs OSU?
What about when he booted a pass into the arms of a USC linebacker?
Despite some fantastic moments, he was never perfect on the field (and generally quite far from perfect off of it). This is what galls me most about his attitude.

Interesting that Michigan fares better on 1st round NBA talent than any of the other categories. Is it because we have not been well-coached? That the NBA overrates our players? Or the "supporting casts" were not at the same level as these other schools?

I miss those days. As someone who first dipped his toe into the blogging scene before jumping in up to my neck, most of these sites were not only daily must-reads, many were helpful compatriots in the goal of writing more, writing better, writing for an audience (ideally).
Now: No time to write, very few blogs to link (those who remain extant don't need it anyway), and even harder to build up an audience. C'est la vie.
Thanks for the memories!

|02/24/2018 - 8:13am||Oh man||
I was in the same section of accounting as Ward, but I can’t remember of it was the first semester or the second. My recollection was that he had some absences, but was there about 65% of the time. Mostly I was shocked that he would be enrolled in such a class. The other eight “stars” spent their evenings “studying” in a room at the UGLi goofing around the whole time, but I never saw him there with them.
So I always had this image of him as the rare top recruit who wanted to get the most out of his uniceraity education. You’ve now shattered that image for me, which is a bummer, but surely accurate. Sigh.
FWIW he seems to be doing all right as a motivational speaker these days.
Also, if it was the same course, I canno recall who you are or what you looked like (sorry), but I do recall enjoying the class a lot. (And thanks for the A.)
