I wonder too if her decision…

I wonder too if her decision to return might not also be influenced a bit by the WNBA draft order.  With Indiana having the first pick, is that a place she'd be excited to play?  They've been bad, but they have good players in Boston, Smith, & Mitchell.  Or...would she prefer to go back to Iowa for a year, suck up all that NIL money, make the scoring mark unreachable for anyone else ever, and roll the dice with who gets the number one overall pick next year.

It only took her three.  And…

It only took her three.  And of course, she broke it on a logo 3.

This is fair.  But it's not…

This is fair.  But it's not like it's a fully comprehensive bio of the man.  There is much of his life that was never touched on here at all.

Even though Oppenheimer was…

Even though Oppenheimer was filmed with IMAX cameras, I'm not sure why?  I saw it in IMAX and at it's core, it's really just a dramatic biopic.  Would you go see The Imitation Game or The Theory of Everything in IMAX?  I just don't think it added value to this film like it would if it were, say, a big action spectacle of a film.

I loved Barbie.  I liked…

I loved Barbie.  I liked Oppenheimer.

For Oppenheimer, I don't know that Nolan really need three hours to tell this story.  I also don't know that we needed both the Manhattan Project story AND the hearings story in one film.  Also, the bajillion cameos.  It was a lot.  And, like many Nolan projects, the sound mixing was questionable.

Barbie was really excellently written and acted.  Greta and Noah are such good writers and Greta's first two films both got Best Picture nominations.  This one may too.  Especially if the hype and box office continue to support it.

Ultimately, both will receive some Oscar noms.  Oppenheimer should get nominated for a number of the tech categories, best picture, actor, supporting actor, adapted screenplay and director.  Plus possibly cinematography and score.  Barbie should get nominations in adapted screenplay, supporting actor, production design (it will win this) costume & makeup, and possibly get director and original song.

I'd consider both very successful movies and I'm happy to see (as Nat from Shoresy would say) "bums in seats" when it comes to theaters.  I usually go to 2-3 movies a week and I would like that to continue, so hopefully this helps get people back to the theaters.

I'm seeing both this weekend…

I'm seeing both this weekend.  I opted for Barbie first.  I see that tomorrow at 4:00 and Oppenheimer on Friday at 2:30.  I'm just more invested in Barbie.  I trust Greta Gerwig, especially after Ladybird and Little Women.

Of course, I see most movies anyway, but this is a huge weekend with a number of Oscar nominations on the line I think.

I have tickets to see Ween…

I have tickets to see Ween in September.  I've seen them several times and few things are as enjoyable as a Ween show.  I'm very excited for this one.

Truly what a time to be a…

Truly what a time to be a fantasy fan right now!  House of the Dragon, Rings of Power, The Wheel of Time, The Witcher, the upcoming Willow series.  I'm so glad we've reached a point in our pop culture that fantasy television is not only mainstream but the quality is actually pretty good.

I've enjoyed House of the Dragon.  It's very Westerosi and, though I know how the story plays out through the books, I'm still interested in seeing it on screen.

Rings of Power though.  This one is tougher.  I'm one of those extreme Tolkien nerds.  I first read the trilogy when I was nine years old and have read it every year since.  I'm 48.  I've read the Silmarillion, the Book of Lost Tales, and even the twelve-volume History of Middle Earth.  Suffice it to say, I'm into this stuff.

I do have some concerns about the show, but those concerns are mostly related to my knowledge of the source material.  I understand they are condensing the timeline. I hate it, but I understand it.  This show should be more of an anthology.  Do a season or two on the forging of the Rings of Power, then do a season or two on the Fall of Numenor.  Then maybe they'll have the rights to the First Age stories and we can get a season on Beren and Luthien, or the Children of Hurin, or any of the other great Silmarillion stories.  As it is, we have a plot line that includes the forging of the Rings and also includes someone like Isildur, who was born 1500 years after the forging of the Rings.

But fine.  I get it.  That's just the Tolkien nerd in me struggling, but I can accept there are changes to make the show more TV-friendly.  Like having the Harfoots.  It's true that the hobbits as we know them were made up of Harfoots, Fallohides, and Stoors, but none were seen until the Third Age.  But ok, I can accept that maybe there were some tribes around back in the Second Age as well.  Especially since no one really knows where they came from.  The creation of the Elves, Men, Dwarves, and Ents are well-documented.  Hobbits just kind of showed up.  But as long as we get through the story without there being any sort of well known hobbit hero, then I'm ok with it, as one of the reasons LOTR works is that most of the world doesn't even know hobbits existed.

The good though - this show is absolutely gorgeous.  The money spent on production is well spent.  Bear McCreary's score is outstanding.  I think Morfydd Clark has been exceptional as Galadriel - and yes, as someone mentioned earlier, by the time the Rings were forged, Galadriel and Celeborn have long been married and their daughter Celebrian is a little over 1000 years old.  So yeah - a little fast and loose with the timeline.

I'll stop here before this turns into a diary (too late?).  I'm enjoying both shows.  I am more hopeful for RoP though just because I love Tolkien's world so much.

I watched the match last…

I watched the match last night and it was pretty spectacular.  Honestly though, I think it will behoove her to lose her first doubles match with Venus.  If she has to start playing daily from here on out for singles and doubles, it's going to hamper her chances.

In both of her matches so far I've felt so bad for Kovinic and Kontaveit.  The entire building is against them and cheer for every bad thing that happens to them.  That's gotta be so tough.  Tomljanovic is up next and should be beatable.  My prediction is that Serena goes down to Samsonova in the fourth round.  She's on a two tournament win streak and playing extremely well at the moment.

I am a CIO at a college and in my 24 years of experience in this field, I cannot recommend the Macbooks.  Apple products, by nature, do not always play well with others when it comes networking with other systems that aren't inherently Apple.  Guess what fills most college's student experiences?  Non-Apple apps.

Rather, I would recommend a Windows laptop and the two of you just need to decide what form that takes.  I wouldn't skimp too much on power (i5 CPU or higher) and make damn sure the drive is an SSD.  Otherwise it's all about brand preference.  My daughter is in year five of her college career at the moment and has had great success with the Lenovo Yoga series.  But there are a lot of good options out there.

Right?  This is insane to me…

Right?  This is insane to me.  I love the WNBA and would rather watch that than the NBA most of the time.  Granted, this is partially due to having grown up in Cincinnati and not having an NBA team to root for.

I watched the Storm v Aces game yesterday and it was compelling right to the final minute.  Good stuff.

What we like and dislike is obviously subjective and nothing exists that will please everyone, but there will always be a market of some kind for women's sports.  Also, and I cannot stress this enough, more opportunity is never a bad thing.

Jumping on board the Letterkenny train.  I also adore Shoresy.  It's only been out a few months and I've already watched it four times.  Can't wait for more episodes.

The 64 minute first set…

The 64 minute first set between Halep and Rybakina was incredible to watch.  Halep won it on a 13-11 tiebreak score.  Then drops the second by a break before overpowering Rybakina in the third.  Granted, it wasn't as thrilling of a match as Osaka's, but it was so much fun to watch.  Halep could be a threat in this thing if she stays healthy.  Though I still think Barty and Sabalenka are playing the best right now.

I love tennis.

My only problem with this P/CP is that, in reality, there is no such thing as too much sour cream.

I follow the WTA side of the…

I follow the WTA side of the house.  I am a huge Halep fan, and though she did get past Giorgi, who has been playing very well of late, I do not have a lot of confidence in her going super far this year.  It's been a rough, injury-filled year for Simona.

Until she gets stopped, I will always assume Osaka takes the hard court slams.

This could the breakout slam for Sabalenka though. Hard courts suit her game and she's been inching ever closer to winning something big.

I would love to see Swiatek take a another leap forward and win something huge on the hard courts as well.  Two of her three titles were on clay, but she did win in Adelaide earlier this year.  Rooting for her pretty hard.  I have to love a player who puts together Lego kits in between matches to stay focused, has apologized to an umpire's chair when she bumped into it and, after winning in Rome earlier this year, thanked her cat in her speech.

Outside of Osaka though, I suspect this is Barty's to lose.  Her side if the draw is far weaker than the other and she's been playing fantastic all year.

Here's to a fun tournament!

Bengals here.  Which, in and…

Bengals here.  Which, in and of itself, can be pretty hurtful.

I don't hate this draft.  Trading down in the second was solid.  Added two more fourth round picks.  D-Line was an area of need, so they went out and took three DEs and two DTs.  I hope a couple of those guys pan out.  They drafted three OL as well.  I like the focus on the trenches.  That's where the focus needs to be.  Protect Burrow.  Get to the QB.  But outside of the line play, they picked up a WR, RB, and PK.  Chase was a good pick.  They lost AJ Green, but Chase with Boyd and Higgins should make for a very good WR group.

The thing that stands out to me the most is that zero DBs were drafted.  It's not a huge need, but still seems like one out of ten draft picks could have been for secondary depth.  That seems...short sighted?   I don't know.  But overall I'm optimistic.  If the lines hold up and Burrow stays healthy, the Bengals could, maybe, possibly? maybe...be good.

Maybe.

I don't follow the men's…

I don't follow the men's game nearly as much as I do the women's.  So I'll speak primarily on the WTA side of the equation.

In spite of the brain fart she had in Melbourne this week, I like Simona Halep to pick up her first Grand Slam on a hard court.  It's good to see Barty playing again after a long break, and playing well.  She'll be dangerous in her home slam as well.

As for who has been playing the best tennis over the last few months - I like both Kenin and Sabalenka to go far.  Kenin ran into the buzzsaw that was Iga Swiatek at the French in the finals, which was the only thing that kept her from winning two slams in 2020.  And Sabalenka has been winning almost everything she's been entering since slam season ended late last year.

Can the feats of strength…

Can the feats of strength this year be alcohol-related?

Asking for a friend...

I think the same sentiment…

I think the same sentiment was probably said about Utah from the Mountain West vs Alabama in the 2009 Sugar Bowl.  And in 2007 in the Fiesta Bowl when Boise State beat Oklahoma.  Yes, teams like Bama and Clemson would be favored in those games, but anything can happen in what is effectively a one game series.  Even getting to the Championship game would make an enormous statement about Group of Five viability.  They don't have the depth, and they don't have the schedule, but the 1's on the top G5 teams can often give anyone a competitive game if healthy.

This episode was especially great if you watched Clone Wars and Rebels.  It's still great if you didn't, but won't be quite as impactful.  So great to see Bo-Katan again and actual Mandos being Mandos.

I am 0 for today.  I have resigned myself to the fact that I'll get it at some point next year.

I've been trying to an order in for the PS5 since the pre-orders began a few months back.  Stayed up last night until past midnight trying to find a retailer with a stock.  Still no luck.  I'll try again for the preset Walmart times today.

I don't understand why Sony is making it so hard for us to give them our money.

I'm not a big horror fan.  It doesn't do much for me.  But by far the scariest movie I've seen is not intended (mostly) to be scary.  Idiocracy is terrifying in it's prescient realism.  You can see humanity heading in that direction today and it's sad and horrifying all at the same time.

Ugh.  I try.  I really try to respect people's musical differences.  Everyone has different tastes and I get that.  But hip hop is easily the worst thing to happen to ears since Van Gogh.  I don't understand the appeal.

*Though in the interest of full disclosure, I did wear out a DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince tape or two back in the 80s.  I'd say don't judge, but I think in this case it would be warranted.

Whatever your thoughts on…

Whatever your thoughts on whether or not Die Hard should be a Christmas movie, in this day an age, it absolutely is one.  It's speaks to the zeitgeist more than anything else.  No other action movie (No, not even YOU, Jingle All the Way!) has really cemented itself in Christmas pop culture like Die Hard has.

So whatever your opinion in the matter, (and you're not wrong, either way) pop culture dictates that it's a Christmas movie and it's likely here to stay.

It had some issues.  You're…

It had some issues.  You're right about the pacing, especially in the first act.  But overall, I liked it.  It brought everything to a conclusion I think most fans can live with.  Well, those who don't go into it predisposed to hating it already because OMGz Rian Johnson ruined their lives!

It felt very Star Wars, and at this point in the Saga, with hits and misses all across the board (including from the original trilogy), that's really all we can expect and hope for I think.

I don't know.  I think a two…

I don't know.  I think a two-loss team can make the playoff and will at some point.  But it will require some chaos to happen a la 2007.  Some year there will be a situation in which no more than two or three P5 teams have zero or one loss.  At that point they're either bring in a G5 team or what they consider to be the best two-loss team.

These seasons will be few and far between, but I think we'll see them every so often.

There can be only one Highlander - the 1986 movie.  All subsequent films and television shows should be disavowed immediately.  For the good of the children.

I'm not really a huge fan of…

I'm not really a huge fan of men's tennis.  I get tired of seeing the same three people in the finals in nearly every tournament.  But I follow the women's side closely.  I love the parity these last few years have given us.  Though I'm a huge Simona Halep fan, I have a number of players I like to see play well.

Which brings me to my question.  I know folks are often "Rah! Rah! Merica!" when it comes to tennis, and I totally get that for the Olympics or the Fed Cup.  But for me tennis is 100% an individual game not a team game (doubles notwithstanding.)  I tend to like players no matter what country they're from (see:  Halep).  Sometimes I even root against Americans.  I'm still a little bitter with Keys for taking out Halep in Cincy and even with Serena for taking out Sharapova, though only a little.  I didn't actually expect Sharapova to win that one.  So the question is - do you guys root for country representation or individuals?  Or maybe a combination of the two?

For this tournament, there's only one player left that's in my group of 6-8 players that I follow closely, thus I'm fully on board the Andreescu train.  I hope she takes it all.  Though I won't be mad if Serena finally gets #24.

I have seen some good ones. …

I have seen some good ones.  The best new films I've seen so far this year are probably:

Best Overall Film:

The Last Black Man in San Francisco

Best Foreign Film:

Fall of the American Empire (French Canadian film)

Best Feel-Good Damn You Richard Curtis Film:

Yesterday

Best Martial Arts Film:

Master Z: IP Man Legacy

Best Animated Film:

Penguin Highway

Best What the Hell Did I Just Watch Film:

Climax

Honorable Mentions:

Wild Rose

Also, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was solid Tarantino.  I don't know that it breaks into his top three films, but I can't say for sure that it doesn't either.  Brad and Leo both were absolutely outstanding in their performances.

It helps that I have a…

It helps that I have a membership to a fantastic theater in town.  It shows all of the regular movies, but also all of the indie films, foreign films, anime, and they even bring back non-current films.  For $30/mo, I get to see as many as I want and the popcorn is included.  I definitely get my money's worth out of it.  They have a pretty good film festival there each year too.  I went last year for the first time and saw some really cool films and got to talk to the directors and cast.  I hope this place never changes.

If you're counting theater…

If you're counting theater trips only, then I've seen Pulp Fiction 10 times and Rocky Horror Picture Show 51 times.  If you count viewings at home, then the list of movies I've seen more than 10 times easily exceeds triple digits.  I watch a lot of movies.  I track my movies and when I see Once Upon a Time in Hollywood this evening, it will be the 67th movie I've seen in the theater just in 2019.

Movies are kind of my thing.

I'm surprised it took this…

I'm surprised it took this far down the thread for someone to address the FCS opponents in November thing.  I would take that one step further by dictating that all non-conference games must be completed before conference play begins.  What would that mean for independents like ND or BYU?  Tough shit.  Join a conference.  I would also dictate that all bye weeks must occur in the first half of the season.  Thus, no more Alabama getting a bye week or playing The Citadel (virtual bye) the week before playing Auburn.

How did nobody comment on…

How did nobody comment on both the glory and the horror of FauxMo's post?

I've only ever been to three

I've only ever been to three college games, but all three were at different stadiums and all three were memorable.

1995 - Illinois at Ohio State (Ohio Stadium):  This was the game that Eddie George ran for 314yds.  I was visiting a friend on campus that day and on a whim we decided to go to the game at the last minute.  Was cool to see and experience.

1999 - #9 Wisconsin at Cincinnati (Nippert Stadium):  This game was raucous.  I was living a 10 minute walk from the stadium at the time and it was another unplanned game.  Friend called me the day of and we decided to go.  While the stadium isn't all that special, the atmosphere that game was incredible.  UC upset Wisky 17-12.  Everyone rushed the field at the end of the game.  The parties that night in Clifton were especially fun.

2011 - #20 Auburn at #15 Georgia (Sanford Stadium):  I went to this game because I was headed to a Raconteurs concert in Atlanta with a girl who was a huge Auburn fan.  Needless to say, she wasn't happy with the result.  The score at the half was 35-7 UGA.  The final was 45-7.  It was a shellacking.  However, the UGA fans were super cool and I witnessed no harassment of the Auburn fans.
