My guess is that Warde and…

My guess is that Warde and Santa would be happy to have the top NIL program if the $$ were there. The $$ primarily come from alumni donors. Warde's and Santa's job is get $$ from donors for the school, (not necessarily for the athletes of the school). Rules do not allow them to transfer $$ from the school to the NIL collectives.

Of course, not every school follows the rules\

A non-trivial issue is that the big donors get a tax deduction for giving to the school, but not for giving to the NIL collective.

The best case for high NIL contributions is a large, rabid fan base for whom tax deductions aren't a big thing. Looking at you OSU and Alabama. For better or worse, the quality of Michigan students and degrees has allowed many of its graduates to care quite a lot about tax deductions.

Nonetheless, it still stinks when another school appears to be able to wave more money at one of our players or recruits.

Hidden from these stats is…

Hidden from these stats is the impact of guys Michigan added from the transfer portal - 4th and 5th year guys who were originally 3-star and 4-star players. Arguably, these are more valuable than a 5-star freshman or sophomore. Same formula Quinnipiac used for its run to the hockey national title.

Also, I thought McCarthy, Edwards, Hinton and Johnson were all 5-stars, when they were recruited. But perhaps 2 of these were only 5-star to one recruiting service, or fell to a 4-star level at some point.

Does the number of available…

Does the number of available scholarships really matter any more? Is it possible for someone with high NIL income (e.g., JJ McCarthy) to decline a scholarship, so that the 85 limit effectively gets bumped to 86? Or do you get enough NIL to someone like O'Leary so you don't have to use a scholarship for him? Or better yet, an in-stater for whom less NIL would be needed to cover tuition.

Is the TD stat for Caleb…

Is the TD stat for Caleb Williams (86%) a misprint? The ordering of results, and the comment about JJ being #2 leads me to believe the proper TD % for Williams was 76%.

I love the Breaking T shirts…

I love the Breaking T shirts - fit, feel and quality - as far as sizing, I ordered several sizes to cover the family and then returned the ones that didn't fit. The return process at Breaking T was very smooth.

On the ND board they were…

On the ND board they were pretty confident that Bowden would stay at ND - it would have been a lateral move for him, with a (presumed) substantial bump in pay. The ND expectation was that ND would simply boost Bowden's pay and he would stay at ND. Sounds like that's what happened.

Cool story - my daughter was…

Cool story - my daughter was born a couple days before that 1985 game, and came home from the hospital 5 minutes before kickoff. My wife and I took turns holding her while we watched the game. That little girl is now a UM graduate and she and her son joined us for this year's win over the Buckeyes.

Great memories - thanks for reminding me!

So, you move to Michigan and…

So, you move to Michigan and give the $20K in savings to our NIL fund. Sounds like win-win to me!

The university of Michigan…

The university of Michigan is a business, and the athletic department is part of that business. There are many other parts of Michigan's business which it needs to keep in alignment. Many of UM's undergraduate and graduate programs are perennially top-ten in the country. I assume we pay the deans of those departments a top-dollar salary, and we also pay those departments' key professors a top salary.

For a top athletic department performer like Herbert, we have seen the university is willing to pay top dollar - he's reportedly the top-paid S&C coach in college football. The university was willing to make Harbaugh the top-paid coach in football.

If the university were to have jacked up Herbert's pay substantially above the maximum paid by any other football program, the line of deans and professors outside President Ono's door would be quite long, as the "Herbert precedent" would echo loudly along the academic corridors of the university.

Blame Warde all you want, but the reported salary request (by Herbert) was a non-starter for President Ono and the entire university.

In the write-up, there is…

In the write-up, there is mention of a 7-day wait before Moore (or someone else) can be named as HC. I wasn't aware of this 7-day wait requirement. Is it a Michigan thing? It didn't seem like Alabama had to wait that long to announce DeBoer as their new HC.

There was a lot of history…

There was a lot of history with the Chicago Stadium, but it was eventually torn down and replaced by the United Center (which now has a lot of history of its own).

Reading the notes above, tearing down Yost and building a new, first-rate, on-campus facility sounds like the practical answer. The new facility can still retain the name Yost (e.g., Yost II, Yost Center, etc.). There are certainly enough banners to hang to keep it a Michigan shrine.

If the regents get behind this, the $100 million might be doable.

You'll make my day if…

You'll make my day if Champions Circle is a tax-deductible charity!

It's a good cause, nonetheless. I hope it helps us keep a couple top players who were on the fence about coming back for another year.

When I donated, it appeared…

When I donated, it appeared that about 6% of my donation amount was tacked on as a processing/administrative fee. That didn't seem too excessive, as I'm used to admin/development cost levels in annual reports for Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity and other places to which I donate.

I assume it works both ways …

I assume it works both ways - by huddling before lining up, UM has less time to determine how best to attack the D. If so, the key is a good QB (McCarthy) who doesn't need as much time to read the D. I'm guessing that if Saban isn't comfortable shortening the time his QB has to read the D.

The comparison of war and…

The comparison of war and football reminds me of the recent series of commercials about the use of the term "Rock Star" by those who were nothing like Jimmy Page, Ozzie Osbourne or other true rock stars.

Nonetheless, I really enjoyed reading the diary posted by Desmond Was Tripped. His diaries are (to me) always good reading.

Among other reasons, the snub of FSU evokes the memory of the 1973 Michigan team that got screwed out of a Rose Bowl appearance, because Dennis Franklin got injured. It wasn't fair then and IMO it isn't fair now.

I felt FSU earned a spot in the playoff, but that's just my opinion on how the vote should have come out.

But, why the vitriol against Warde?

Do we even know how he voted or what arguments he put forth during the Committee discussions?

This doesn't seem to be the issue to put at Warde's door.

The Game was the first…

The Game was the first college football game my 6 year-old grandson attended. It'll be hard to top the experience. It warmed my heart as he was chanting, "It's great - to be - a Michigan Wolverine!"

Only during a M00N game!

Only during a M00N game!

With respect to #3, I wish…

With respect to #3, I wish that what UM got was a BIG agreement to pursue dirt (supplied by UM or others) on other conference members, and if validated, use the UM settlement as precedent for dealing with the other schools. For example, if the BIG concluded that inter-school sharing of UM’s signals by OSU, Rutgers and Purdue also violated the sportsmanship policy, then Day, Schiano and Walters would be looking at a 3-game suspension.

I dream!

I’m looking forward to the…

I’m looking forward to the skinny on that!

Over the years, I've learned…

Over the years, I've learned the extent to which other schools have felt UM has rubbed their noses in the "Leaders and Best" far too often (biggest stadium, most wins, top academic school, yada, yada, yada). This enmity goes back to the Fielding Yost days for some schools. We are a victim of our success, but also of our arrogance (2nd only to ND, in my opinion). Hence, the piling on by the other conference schools is not surprising to me. That and the Buckeyes' disbelief that UM could whip them so soundly two years in a row without something being amiss.

The issue in front of us is all about payback to Michigan and its figurehead (Harbaugh). As noted by several quotes from rival coaches, the act of sign-stealing has little to no effect on the game. Nonetheless, breaking a rule to steal signs gives the angry mob a platform to vent their decades-long anger onto this issue.

I wish we had never hired Mr. Stalions, but that's water over the dam. We broke a rule, and should accept a reasonable penalty (but not the petty one in front of us now).

But before we think of leaving the conference, we need to understand that we might not be welcome everywhere. Further, the academic side of UM may decide the easier solution is to go the route of the University of Chicago - drop the football program! We need to decide if the devil we know is likely to be better than the devil we don't know.

I worry a bit that with far…

I worry a bit that with far fewer plays per game, there won't be enough body blows to sufficiently weaken the opponent before the game is over. Do Donovan Edwards' 4th quarter runs vs OSU happen with today's clock keeping? Fortunately, they did in 2022, and I suspect that Coach Jim has some new wrinkles up his sleeve for 2023.

Maybe Iowa gets a defensive…

Maybe Iowa gets a defensive TD, recovers one fumble at the 10,but loses 15 yards and kicks a 35 yard FG, and finally pressures the other team into hiking a punt out of the end zone for a safety.

My 10-11 year-old son was…

My 10-11 year-old son was playing in a Little League game, and was frustrated at what he thought were poor ball/strike calls by the umpire. In the car ride home, I observed that the umpire was probably only a high school freshman, possibly in his first season of umpiring, and was still learning. I also observed that the batters swung and missed more often than the umpire was off on his calls. My son thought for a minute, and said “I guess you’re right”.

Dennis Rodman was very…

Dennis Rodman was very similar - I hated his play until he joined the Bulls, and then I chuckled as he pulled his antics. But his main contribution was to get the ball for MJ and to deflect the spotlight from Scottie Pippen, so Pippen could just go out and play basketball.

I’m glad the comings and goings posts are simply labeled “Hello” and “Exit”, as these get the message across in a non-judgmental way. I might change “Exit” to “Farewell”, as this could then include the seniors who have completed their eligibility and perhaps deserve one final congratulatory post.

When President Obama spoke…

When President Obama spoke at a Michigan commencement ceremony about 15 years ago, one of his messages to the graduating seniors was to watch/listen to/read both sides of an issue, and then make up your own mind - he said that, painful as it may be, you should listen to both Fox and MSNBC (and other media). Then you can form (and possibly adjust) your opinions, and carry on a rational discussion of issues. Good advice that lets you sift through the media biases.

I had always known how good a speaker the former President was, but his whole speech that day was excellently tailored to his audience (the graduates). Both challenging and uplifting.

On the UM website it says…

On the UM website it says the tiebreaker is to take all 6 scores from the 4 events into account. Each school has 6 gymnasts compete, but the lowest score from the 6 is dropped to get the regular total and placement. But for the tiebreaker, the 6th score was important, and apparently our four 6th place scores were lower than LSU's four 6th place scores.

I agree with previous posts,…

I agree with previous posts, that Iowa knew it would get killed if it didn’t protect the paint against South Carolina - whose forwards were 6’7” and 6’5”. Iowa had to gamble that South Carolina wouldn’t hit their 3’s and wouldn’t get the follow-up rebounds, unless the ball stayed within a couple feet of the basket. The strategy worked.

Not surprisingly, South Carolina had some sour grapes about the loss, since they probably had never played a good team that had adopted such a strategy.

I see a parallel with UM hockey. We get very frustrated when we play a team like Notre Dame, because we feel they can’t skate with us. They don’t even try to - their strategy is to just clog up everything and look for one or two openings when we get too far up the ice. So even with our superior talent, we sometimes lose to ND. Their Caitlyn Clark often turns out to be their goalie.

It would be interesting to…

It would be interesting to see a graphic for NFL picks, by home state of the player, to see if there is a geographical bias in 247’s ranking of recruits - in other words, are Texas, Florida, Georgia, etc. as dominant in producing NFL picks as they are in producing top 100/200 recruits?

Lots of things happen in the years between college recruiting and NFL drafting - player selection and development, injuries, etc.

Added bathrooms - you can…

Added bathrooms - you can easily miss 10 minutes of the game if you need to wait in a bathroom line. I've seen pretty high-end temporary bathrooms at golfing events, and these could be added by the east side fence next to the Victors parking lot, and a similar one next to the west sidee fence. It could look much better than a simple block of porta-potties, accomplish the same job, and not be too expensive.

During one of our NIT games,…

During one of our NIT games, the announcer mentioned that Williams had been battling a nagging injury all year. I had not heard that before, and if true, would be a logical reason why his play did not improve from prior years. No idea what the injury was, but probably one which limited his quickness, jumping or other skill that made him look a step slow. I suspect he was still in the lineup because he was far better than the other options (likely by simply knowing where he needed to be on the court, or which man he was covering).
