Zak Irvin to G League (Westchester Knicks)

Submitted by OwenGoBlue on

Zak Irvin has signed with the Knickerbocker's G League affiliate that Trey Burke was balling for before being called up to the bigs (where Trey's kind of balling!). Recorded a DNP in his first game today which makes sense given he signed two days ago.

Here's hoping he gets a solid opportunity. He's a longshot to join THJ and Trey this season but I always thought Zak had some NBA bench unit 3-and-D potential and the Knicks wing depth is.... Not Great, Bob.

Take this as an opportunity to join me in my Knicks fandom! It's certainly not the best team to cheer for but there's wonderful entertainment value in the absurd and MSG is still the greatest atmosphere in the NBA.

It seems likely not at all coincidental with Burke's success there that they would take a flyer on Irvin.  I hope it works out for him.  He is a nice kid who loves his momma.  I have met his family; very kind-hearted people.  Best wishes to Zak!

of guys like him out there.  Guys who had decent, but not great college careers, but who will persist in thinking that if they can just work on their jump shot, THEY'LL be the one out of hundreds who will magically transform into an NBA-level talent.

Okay, so...what, then?

The G League is not unlike the baseball minor leagues these days (probably better, actually, at least for the players). Irvin is young man with a UM degree, it's not as if he tried to make the jump out of high school and doesn't have other options. If he wants spend a couple years making $20k or $25k a year playing ball, I don't see why that's a problem. If an NBA team signs him to a two-way deal, then he makes around $75k a year while in the G League, and the $800k a year NBA rookie minimum while on the NBA roster. So if just one NBA team decides to sign him to a two way contract for a few weeks, he could easily make over $200k this year.

He's doing a solid job returning Knicks to respectability and I'm sure he's familiar with Irvins versatility. I'm sure Irvin can be valuable for his defense, rebounding if in the right situation.
