so wasn't too worried. Especially because Lee kind of backed down after he heard it too.
I wonder if Minnesota fans think it really was a valid 3?
After the replay was shown, it was clear as can be. The timeout was called at least a full second before Westbrook even jumped to shoot.
Put down the trout fly i was tying in preparation for the annual fishing expedition to the ancestral home in Scotland, took a sip of the cognac, a puff of the pipe, petted the airedale, and said "Corking good show, old man."
knowing that it didn't count.
it still took a couple of seconds after the game went final before i truly realized we had won
Heard the whistle and knew it didn't matter; actually wanted the shot to go in as it was a great shot by Westbrook. Love those highlight clips plays....
For a split second I went "GOD DAMNIT" but then I saw that a TO was called and I laughed uncontrollably and knew that we had won.. Fate gentleman.. Fate
and then wondered why he was even taking the shot with that much time left. if he makes it there's still almost 5 seconds left in a tie game. then i was screaming for us to foul on the inbounds so they could only make a max of 2 free throws. (which, btw, is what memphis should've done vs kansas at the end of regulation in the title game) but then i remembered that john belein knows WAY more basketball than i do.
I always think it's better to foul when you're up by 3 with seconds to go. You automatically limit them to 2 points, maybe less. That doesn't seem to be the conventional wisdom though. I wonder what the thinking is on the other side, just play D and make them make the tough shot instead of easy free throws? You still have a 1 point lead that way, I don't get it.
I think fouling is generally a good idea, but you have to be careful 1) not to let the guy get off a shot (and get 3 FTs) and 2) not to do it too early. I think 10 seconds is too early, since you're probably going to get fouled right away. Five or less and I think it's a good strategy.
i don't understand why the "conventional thinking" isn't to foul in these situations?
i guess its the fear of the slim chance of fouling while they're shooting
Isn't there also the possibility that they intentionally miss the second and get a 3 or 4 point play?
Yes
Make the first free throw, miss the second but get the rebound and put it back in. Also possible that they get fouled on that put-back bucket and then would have a free throw for the win.
That being said, I think they should foul under 5 seconds leading by three.

Usually a good idea, but not when you are playing a team that is dominating you on the boards. There's a very, very good chance Minny would have made the first, purposely missed the second, and gotten an easy putback.
i think he took that shot because he heard the whistle.
I heard the whistle first, so I relaxed a bit, but then when it went in I feared that the whistle was for a foul and that it might be an NBA-style continuation.
The desperation heave right after that scared the crap out of me. He just threw it up, but I thought it was on line for the basket. Whew!
Generally, teams that have a difficult time rebounding don't want to give the opposition a potential tip-in for the tie and would instead see them try a shot from 20+ feet.
While I agree with the foul strategy, I can see why you'd rather have them taking a lower percentage shot. Plus, you NEVER want to purposely stop the clock with a late lead.
I just about drove into a tree. But just as my right tires hit the rumble strips I yanked it back to the left side of the white line when they said that Tubby had called a timeout.
I laughed because it was clear that the whistle sounded.
Pretty much everyone laughed, and then we started a Tubby chant.
love that bar.
I used to go there for Trivia Tuesdays. Good times.
I heard the call for timeout and the whistle before the shot attempt. I was so happy that it went in assuming that it might make some of the Minnesota players lose focus - since they could feel like they had a 3 pointer stolen.
at all the fans jumping up and cheering when it was blatantly obvious that the whistle had blown.
This one.
it reminded me of a youth soccer game, where even though a shot is clearly 10 feet wide of the goal, the parents wait until it has crossed the end line before they collectively sigh with disappointment that its not going in.
"such a pretty damn 3 to be wasted like that. Thank god it wasn't UM in that position." But, he can use it on his college highlight real. No one will know it didn't count.
Isn't it amazing how those shots go in so much easier after the whistle has blown?
