No, Alabama wouldn't claim 13 titles. They would claim one, the BCS National Championship. The others don't matter. The AP is currently like the Blog Poll. It can be interesting to discuss but doesn't carry any actual weight.

And while the AP poll is the oldest, it is no longer an active participant in the selection of a national champion. It had weight on its own until 1997. From 1998-2004 it was a part of the process of selecting which teams would play for the national championship. From 2005 onward it has been irrelevant.

No, it definitely means something.  USC was #1 in both polls going into the bowl season and only the weirdness of the computer polls kept them out of the "title game."  Unless they had to give up that title due to sanctions, it's legit and very much recognized.  USC claimed that title and rightly so.

But in 2006 his politicking allowed his team to jump a better Michigan team and play for a championship. This year the only thing he can accomplish is to move up in a poll that hasn't meant anything since it stopped being used to help pick the championship game participants almost a decade ago.

What could have been... We lose to ND bc of 6 turnovers, most inside ND territory. We could have easily won that game. If Denard doesnt go down against Nebraska , or Devin comes in instead of Bellomy, we probably win that one, too. I wonder if where wed be ranked right now if we were sitting at 10-1?

This just shows how important it is for our team to show up for our Bowl Game which is looking more and more like Cap One. In order to not have year in year out the deck stacked in the favor of the SEC, OOC teams need to prove SEC teams are not all that by beating them in head-to-head bowl games. All that said if we moved up 3 spots in Coaches Poll I could see us as 17-19 in the BCS which coupled with a win next week could put us in the Top 14 at which point anything could happen.

They are undefeated. Georgia lost to South Carolina by 28 and barely beat Tenn. and Kentucky. Bama is very good, don't get me wrong, but the rest of the SEC is overrated. They are good, and still probably the best conference in the nation (though not by a long shot), I don't believe they have 5 of the top 10 or 6 of the top 12 teams in the nation. When you actually look at their schedules, it's a bunch of underwelming wins and then winning against other SEC teams with a bunch of meh wins. The fact that they have a 14 team conference makes voters believe they are so deep, when in fact they don't play nearly half the "great" teams anyway.

In my opinion, Oregon, OSU, and FSU should all be ahead of Georgia. Kansas St. and Clemson should be ahead of Florida and LSU, and a boatload of teams, including a meh Nebraska team, should be ahead of S. Carolina. All those SEC teams should be spread out throughout the top 25, not throughout the top 12.

Louisville and Rutgers play against each other in two weeks.

Stanford plays UCLA this week.  If Stanford wins, the two teams rematch a week later.  If UCLA wins, the Bruins will likely play Oregon a week later.

South Carolina and Clemson play each other this week.

Oklahoma closes with Ok State and @TCU (really could have used a WVU win last night).

Texas closes with TCU and @K-State.

Oregon State plays Oregon this week.

There is plenty of room to move up if we can take care of business in the Shoe on Saturday.

The polls have essentially reached alignment at this point. After Notre Dame, the only differences are Boise State, Utah State and  Ohio State (for a specific reason) not being in both polls. Beyond that, they share the same seven SEC teams, the same four Big XII teams, the same four Pac-12 teams, and two each from the ACC, Big Ten, MAC and Big East. Certainly a well-rounded poll if there ever was one from a conference standpoint.

It looks more and more, based on the numbers, that we're most likely, barring the scenario of a Nebraska collapse at Iowa in concert with a win for us in Columbus, to be the Big Ten #2, which is the Capital One Bowl tie-in, I believe. I imagine it would be Georgia that we would face at this point.

Our three losses definitely hurt but am I the only one that is at least encouraged by the fact that we lost to 1-2 and the likely BIG 10 Champions? As a voter, how can you not respect Michigan?

Its kinda sad because if this Michigan team had been playing in the 90s they would have been a top 15 team even with an 8-3 record. The BIG has lost so much respect over the years its ridiculous. Hell Nebraskas only losses are to OHIO and UCLA both excellent teams. Why is OU, USC, and OSU ranked ahead of them?

snarling wolverine

Not if one of those three losses was by four TDs.  The Michigan teams of the '90s (and '70s, '80s and most of the '00s) were almost never beaten soundly.  We were known for taking on a very difficult schedule every year and competing hard in every game, and that earned us a lot of respect.   (Not that we quit against Bama this year; we were just overmatched.)

When you have three losses, no marquee wins and one of your losses was a national-TV embarassment, you can't complain about your ranking spot.

So all 60 AP voters believe that in a head to head match, Alabama would lose to ND. Nobody even gets the point of these polls. They are #1 by default, not because the majority think they are the best team in college football.

I actually 100% think this will happen.

I don't think UCLA will throw the game in an obvious manner. Or bench their starters like a 14-1 NFL team would.

But I do think that UCLA knows that they have a much better shot at the Rose Bowl against Stanford. They also know that the game next week is meaningless for them (unless Oregon loses again in which case UCLA could host the PAC12 champ game). Would you really risk injury to guys like Hundley or Franklin in a meaningless game? Imagine the press you would get if you lost your starting QB the week before the biggest game for UCLA in decades.

Stanford on the otherhand is playing for their Rose Bowl lives. It is a must win, so I highly doubt we'll see a let down.

All of this adds up to a highly unlikely UCLA win IMO.

I don't think UCLA will win, but if they think Stanford is easy pickings compared to Oregon, I don't know about that.  I was very impressed with Stanford last night.  I thought that was a deserved victory.  If not for turnovers (including the turnover on downs when they had a wide-open TE), they may have won going away.

I completely agree that Stanford is an excellent team, and UCLA will have their hands full in the PAC12 Champ Game regardless of who they play.

But I'd rather play the Cardinal on the Farm than the Ducks on the Pond (Autzen) every day of the week and twice on Saturdays. Oregon had their slip up this year. I doubt they will have another, unless it is against an SEC team in the MNC.

If UCLA is smart, they will take their chances with Stanford.

if we beat OSU I think we deserve to be ranked in the top 15, with our only losses being to the top two teams and a potential big10 champ without our star player for most of the game, on the road at night
