Volleyball sweps #14 MSU, takes back Michigan Pride Flag trophy

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

It's been a long time coming, but we finally got back the flag in our full possession.

#18 Michigan faced #14 MSU on senior night at Cliff Keen Arena just a week after dropping a 3-1 set to MSU at their place.

Wolverines wasted no time, as they raced out to early leads in the first two sets including a massive 17-4 lead in set two. Michigan went up 2-0 in the match with 25-16 and 25-11.

Set 3 was a wild one that went all the way into 30s in scoring, but it was Michigan's great play from their middle blockers that won them this one, taking set 3 by a wild 32-30 score.

Michigan's two sport star Claire Keiffer-Wright had a monster game, leading the team in kills (12) and blocks (7).

Despite the season series with MSU being tied at 1-1, Michigan will take possession of the Michigan Pride Flag trophy due to the tiebreaker of sets. We won 4 sets to their 3.

Here's some background info on the flag if you've never heard of it-

Beginning in 1990, the winner of the season series based on the season’s two head-to-head matches has been presented with the Michigan Pride Flag. The trophy is a State of Michigan flag bearing the motto “Tuebor” or “I will defend” on it. The flag flew above the State of Michigan Capital in Lansing on September 18, 1990. If the season series is split, the Michigan Pride Flag will go to the school won the most sets. If the number of sets won is still tied, it will go on and points and if it’s still tied after points are accounted for, the trophy will be shared.

they played really well Sunday at the Gophers. First 4 sets were all 25-23, but they faded a bit at the end of the fifth. But they have some real talent, if not the most height. #9 has a wicked strong serve.

WD, have you ever considered a career in journalism? I'm sure you could compile your articles/summaries and ask to be an intern somewhere. Or just freelance, or some UofM news outlet...
