if MAAR earns a meanngful role, I expect there will be more than 15 minutes between him and Spike. We'll see more small lineups with Caris at the 3.

Beilein has at least hinted that Wilson's future position is the 4, but he's not ready for it yet. He surprised me with his skill improvement. I'd like to see what he can do defending the position. I wouldn't be surprised to see him play there a little this season. Not because Beilein is suddenly going to start playing two bigs, but because Wilson's skillset might just fit.

Fun to watch Dakich give Wagner the two hand chest shove to reward two good plays by Wagner.   Dakich is one of those intangible chemistry guys that is absolutely priceless to have on a roster.

1. known quantities that will play:

Levert, Walton, Irvin, Dawkins, Spike, Doyle

2. look good in video/?can't keep off court:

Wilson, MAAR

3. uncertain/may see sporadic minutes (including games with ~0 minutes):

Donnal, Robinson, Wagner, Chatman

My guess is the above 8 play the lions share of minutes with 9-10 guys getting into most games with ~5-10 minutes total for players 9-10 from that last group. I would think Donnal gets to run when there's foul trouble or sloppy play from Doyle/Wilson and Robinson gets to run based on match-up or a need for the 3. Seems like Wagner is most likely headed for redshirt ("this guy is only 18 and should be in high school"). Not sure about Chatman - he still looks like he's somewhere between smooth and lacksadaisical.

Glad to see that new muscle didn't negatively effect Wilson's stroke. If anything, his shot has improved because of it. The added weight should really help him from getting boxed out so much, down low. And his length will really create some good mismatches. I'm stoked.

I was there for the entire practice and had seats at midcourt about 8 rows up. Obviously this is one practice and the accuracy in regards to what I am about to say is minimal. However, here are my thoughts on how everybody played:

Spike Albrecht: Spike is going to normal Spike again this year. He didn't do any full court drills so it is hard to speculate on his game this year.

Zak Irvin: Zak sat out most everything. He did shooting drills but it looked like he couldn't get his normal elevation on his jump shot, maybe because of his back. Hopefully this is not a problem.

Derrick Walton: To be honest, Derrick looked a little rusty. His passing and handle were good but he didn't really attempt to penetrate or probe the defense. This could simply be him staying within the offense.

Caris Levert: He good. Caris is very smooth and his handle is above average. He had a couple of WOW passes.

Aubrey Dawkins: Aubrey rolled his ankle on a Alley Oop early in the practice, his head was near the rim as he was dunking. I can only help but attribute his poor defense and offense to having a sore ankle.

Muhammad Ali Abdur-Rahkman: If he hits shots like he did last night it is going be hard to not get him 15 minutes a game. His handle looked good and his shot was smooth.

Kameron Chatman: He is going to take a couple of questionable shots this year, but he has gotten bigger and his stroke looks a lot better. I loved seeing him work in the post.

Mark Donnal: He started off well but disappeared. I call him a turtle for a reason, when he gets down low he shrinks and plays really conservative.

Ricky Doyle: Ricky will get 20 minutes a game just based off of defense and hustle. His post game still needs work but he added a nice little 10 footer which will help.

Moritz Wagner: Just like Beilein has said, Moe will do some things that are jaw dropping. His spin move and transition buckets were nice. However, I see him getting pushed around down low due to his low weight.

D.J. Wilson: D.J. was easily the most impressive. His shooting was silky smooth and he grabbed some nice boards. If that 12 footer is a 75% shot he will be playing quite a bit.

Brent Hibbits: Brent looked kind of slow and his shot is a work in progress. However, he is a big guy and I see him getting some play in a couple of years.

Sean Lonergan: I still am going to stick behind my prediction of him transferring and going to a low major school and being awesome. His shot is inconsistent but he has major rise.

Andrew Dakich: LEADER

Thx for that balanced take.  I am hoping Wilson is big enough to give us a lot of minutes at 5.  I know ultimately we'd love him at 4 but with Donnal just not being anything more than a guy you throw in when Doyle is in foul trouble early I'd like to see Wilson and Doyle share the 5 with Wilson maybe getting 5 minutes a game at the 4 or more vs "big lineups".

Kam will be interesting - obviously he struggled horribly last year; but confidence can change a man.  If he has a good start this year (and we play a lot of cupcakes) he could be an X factor.  With Irvin slowed for now, he will be asked to do more early.

Not worried about Dawkins.  He proved it last year - the main question is can be take it to a new level or is that pretty much what we get this year.  I'd be fine with "that is what we get".

So... Mo looks like a guy who is going to contribute this year...? Is that stupid thinking? He was a standout in the scrimmage video to me, making numerous plays both on offense and defense. A few McGaryesque steals to transition baskets.

I'm not an expert or anything, but he doesn't seem to have the "speed of the game" issue so much in that video that is usually the reason for a redshirt. I know there's a lot of talent on this team, but to say he's a lock for a redshirt would be incorrect thinking in my opinion.
