Tom, can you address "the rumor"

Submitted by Promote RichRod on
I hate to add another thread out there on this topic (sorry chitown, I'll be oblique as I can), but can you make some calls and just dispel/confirm it for us? It's a pretty big deal but it seems like no one actually has any info...

I'm very hesitant to say anything about this, because of what happened with "McGuffie gate." All I'm going to say at this point, is that this is not a rumor. Please don't ask me to say anything else, because it's not appropriate right now. If a decision is made, lets respect the kids and families involved, and let them announce it. I think we all learned a lesson from the last mess.

Steve: You are smart, talented and showed a great attitude. You took licks and got up and tried again. You ran hard. You made some super plays. Freshmen rarely come in and produce great results. This is especially true when nearly the entire supporting cast is new as well. But you never quit trying. To hang the 2008 win/loss record on you (or Nick) is ridiculous. How many close games were lost because of special teams turnovers, or breakdowns in the secondary, etc. This is a team sport. Win together, lose together. You played well enough to help the team win at least 3, maybe 4 or 5, more games. Very respectable considering the young lineup. Hang in there. You have a very good chance to play quarterback at the University of Michigan.

I like Threet a lot. Well, not his elbow. But other than that I like him a lot. I think that with this offseason worth of practice and if he can stay healthy, I think he can definitely be the starter through out most, if not all, of next year. I have high hopes for Threet.

Consider it thirded. I cannot imagine coming into Michigan as a freshman and being told, "hey - we're going to go throw you in front of over 100k ravenous fans (and more that happen to be watching on TV) and let them judge your ability." Class and grades were scary enough. I can't imagine being starting quarterback. Eek.

Rodriguez is going after top-flight dual-threat quarterbacks and Threet doesn't fit that mold. Rodriguez never would have recruited Threet in a million years. Rodriguez has already demonstrated that he is willing to start freshmen over more experienced players.

Not sure what his creidt situation is but if Threet plays this year and pushes himself to graduate next spring or summer, couldn't he pull a Guittierez and transfer again without sitting out the year since he would be a grad student? This would allow to accrue playing time as a backup this year and immediately start somewhere else in 2010. He just finished his academic sophomore year, if a got any credits at GA Tech and took summer classes, then this might be doable. Seems like that result would be good for both the program (this year) and him getting another shot to start somewhere else.

Rather than speculate further (now that we have the official "no comment" from Tom), I think we should all sit back and wait to see what happens. Just my opinion, though, which obviously counts very little.

Yes, he tried as hard as he could, but he often failed (see Toledo pick 6, TD in the end zone near the end of the Northwestern game). He just flat out doesn't have the tools for this system, and would be a mediocre starter at a major school that ran an offense that suited him. I'm sorry, but I want to see what Forcier and DRob can do. They have more speed and it sounds like Forcier's a better passer so far. I do appreciate the past effort, though, and I'll never forget it.

Forcier and Shoelace would never see the field if Threet stays. Threet, if nothing else, would provide a good transition to ease these frosh into the role. If you don't think that's valuable, then he would still provide a better backup option than Sheridan (3rd stringers matter too). If you don't think either of those matter, then he would provide valuable competition to the freshman, as well as be able to impart some words of wisdom to them from having a year of experience. The potential upside from his departure: 1 scholarship. I definitely do not find a scholarship more valuable than what I named above.

Are you ready to say the same when Tate or Shoelace fumble away an easy pitch, throw a horrible TAINT, or act like freshmen? Because if you are not, then don't knock Threet for struggling as (basically) a freshman behind a horrible offensive line, with one legitimate wide receiver, and a running game that only got on track toward the end of the season, after his Exploding Elbow disease had taken effect.

So if he does transfer somewhere, he would be a fourth year sophomore by the time he hits the field again. How many times can you transfer and still play? Does it matter?

He's already red-shirted. So, if he went to an FBS school (I'm not even sure he'd be allowed to at this point) he's lose a year of eligibility and be a 4th year Junior when he played again.

If he is going to transfer, there are other things in play, because I still think that he is likely to start - at least at the beginning of the year. I would hate to see him go as I think he can run this offense, and while not ideal, is good to have around while the freshmen learn and if one gets hurt and the other is not ready. The thought of Nick Sheridan being one heartbeat away from playing again is not comforting.

So again, this is the "source" of the rumors. Keep in mind that this poster is not a regular guy and is most likely full of it. http://www.mlive.com/forums/umfb/ Thread # 299586 "A friend who works within football program, told me Threet is serious about transfering. According to my friend, ST will meet with RR today to ask for release. Whether or not RR will talk him out of it, my friend does not know. Accordng to friend, Threet felt RR blamed him to much for past seasons record, also unhappy with some coaches. Sorry, I don't have a link. Of course I will not give out friends name. I have no reason to lie or make this up, not trying to flame or cause any trouble. Just passing on info. If RR talks ST into staying, this probably doesn't become news and I look bad. If I here any more info, I'll pass it on."

I like this blog just as much as the next man, but it's not like this message board is very credible. There is one or two credible sources here. The rest is just garbage posted by guys stating obscene scenarios about recruits and games we should have won, and then people crying for the rest of the thread that the headline isn't informative enough. (but yet it is comical)

If true, someone needs to talk some sense into him. He'd most likely sit the bench at any good D1 program. Be a Mark Elzinga. Concentrate on school son, your future isn't at the next level.

Jesus Tap-Dancing Christ, how many times during the coaching search did some idiot claiming to know someone deeply connected in the athletic department assure us that the new coach was going to be Kirk Ferentz, or Steve Sarkisian, or Marvin Lewis, or any of the other ridiculously implausible names floating around the blogosphere back then? Now we have another knucklehead saying ""A friend who works within football program, told me that Threet is serious about transfering." Anyone lending this statement the tiniest bit of credibility makes the most wacky UFO nut look like a deep skeptic.

When it was just an MLive comment it was a rumor. It has progressed long past that now. The premium boards are talking about it (Threet pic on pront page of Scout) and our own Tom has confirmed it's NOT just a rumor but no further details. If he stays now, it seems it's because he changed his mind. Clearly he told people he wants out but has yet to make up his mind. It is playing out just like the McGuffie "rumors" did. People are just being more cautious this time and letting things play out because the McGuffie chatter almost led to egg all over the faces of Brian and Tom. Of course things are always subject to change. If they do (I hope), then it doesn't mean it was a rumor all along. This is not baseless speculation.

...best of luck to him, and let's all move on. There are 3 very young QBs on the roster, and 2 of them will likely split the snaps next year. Things will be just fine. I'm of the belief that if Rich Rod wants to run a spread offense, he should play the QB he wants to win with from day one. Does anyone here think anyone other than Terrelle Pryor would have started from day one on campus? I'm not comparing Pryor to Forcier or Robinson except as to the style of offense they are QBs for. The best way for this team to gel with Rich Rod's offense is to have the offense together and to develop through the season. The best way to do that is to throw Tate and Denard in there right away. Again, not comparing the players, just the first-year situation. West Virginia went 11-1 in 2005. Pat White played in 9 games, including the second game of the season. The team did fine. According to what we've read, Tate has been trained for years and is acclimating fine. Coach probably will be confident to have Tate and Denard play against Western and we'll go from there.

We'll know more after spring practice - but in short I agree. I will add, that when healthy, Threet appeared to have a good grasp of the offense. His accuracy was not good, but he was making good reads. After he got hurt, he lost his limited ability to keep on the zone read option and his play really suffered for that and his other physical limitations. I think he is perfectly capable of running this offense and hope he stays and competes because I think he would be the likely starter and the beginning of the year.

Did you watch the first half of the Wisconsin game? And, there had to be a reason why he didn't start over Sheridan. I would question why RR isn't trying to move forward to install his offense, his program, his identity, by using Threet to help Forcier fit in in the first few games. I say get Forcier out there and then bring in a different QB if Tate isn't getting it done. That should be Threet's role if he stays. It sounds to me like Forcier has been working like crazy to be ready for day one. I haven't heard those same reports about Threet. Is Threet doing the prep work like Tate? If so, it'll be a closer competition. If he's not, I think Tate will be ready to step in in September because Threet rarely looked at ease in RR's offense. RR stripped it down significantly due to Threet and Sheridan's shortcomings (I remember at the NW game that every time Michigan was on a side hash they would run the RB sweep to the short side - every time - in the first half. The playbook was incredibly shallow, no matter the weather). Does anyone here think senior Threet starts over junior Tate? If the answer is no, then just start Forcier's education at QB from game one - there's no reason to mix in Threet unless a game is close and Tate needs to be benched.

avoiding sink-or-swim situations where possible. The transition from HS to B10 is a big one. If we have someone who has been there before to help ease the transition, it can only help. Sure, it could be the case that Forcier rises to the challenge and overcomes everything from the first snap...but no reason to force the issue. Ideally, we'd like to put Threet in there on game 1 and get a score or 2, then put in our best frosh. There's less pressure, the game is in progress, a mistake won't kill us, etc. So right about now you will say something like "well, he has to get in there sometime!" And you're right, but we should take every opportunity to make a graceful transition if we can. Threet gives us that opportunity. And obviously, if Threet were to start and just suck, we'd have to bite the bullet and toss the frosh into the fire, down a score or 2. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't TRY to make it a little easier on the frosh.
