Terrific story on Karan Higdon. Please read.

The kid is truly a Star on and off the field. If you have a chance to read this please do. He truly gets "it". Much of his story is coming to the light now and it's awesome that the Michigan fan base and community is getting to know who this kid is. He is a real Michigan Man. https://www.michigandaily.com/section/football/michigan-football-karan-…

Karan seems like such a great kid and deserves all the credit in the world, but wow, what a mom! She’s a hero in every sense of the word. A fantastic example for every parent.

I loved this comment posted after the article (I checked the Googles, Diane Bassett is indeed a teacher at Riverview):

I think I speak for all of Karan's former high school teachers, when I say what a joy it was to have Karan as a student in class, and how much we looked forward to our Friday night football games. Karen was an excellent role model, studying for tests while on the bus, and in the weight room awaiting his turn on the equipment. We're so proud of the young man he has become, and we're always excited to see him excel on the field for Michigan. We look forward to his visits to Sarasota, and hope he remembers...once a Ram, always a Ram! Now we say, Go BLUE!

I'd love to... And believe me when I tell you I'd like to thank you personally for helping him get to Ann Arbor...but first you really should take back for saying a month ago in frustration, that Harbaugh was benching Higdon due to politics... that was real bs... everyone has bad days, but the last thing Harbaugh would do, is that...

Karan never complained. Obviously I've watched this kid for many years and believed he could really help the team. His relationship with both Harbaughs right now is really good. Jay has personally given him a higher level of confidence and believes in him. This has helped elevate his game. It's very hard to separate your feelings when invested at this level in a kids well being and success. Harbaugh is an excellent coach. Karan is being utilized now to help the team win games. Any frustration that was there or not is no longer pertinent. This team can accomplish some great things going forward.

Thanks OP for posting. Can’t believe he is already a junior! Doesn’t seem like he will declare for the draft because he cares about getting his degree. Hopefully he continues to play well so he gets a degree and drafted.

I lived in Sarasota from early 2011 until 2014 with a woman I had been dating.  We lived close to downtown.

Never have I witnessed such a chasm between the haves and the have-nots in a community.

This is a special kid, with a special mother.

Congrats, Karan.

I live in SRQ and remember Karan well.  My wife teaches at Sarasota High, Riverview's rival and he killed us 4 straight years.  My son plays with his cousin on the SRQ JV team and Karan is a regular at his games (bye weeks anyway).  Great article btw and very accurate which is rare.  Newtown and surrounding area are like the worst parts of Detroit.  Kids growing up there just have no shot.  So sad.

But our staff is working to get these guys exposed and out of there. We've got players in a bunch of good situations and working on the guys there now. There are a lot of challenges though honestly. We've had a kid get shot this offseason. Had another get caught up some serious criminal matters. Our kids down here do have a tough road but they can make it. It just takes extra and increased accountability.

A) This is a great post, and thanks for sharing.

B)  I LOVE this line

"He runs harder than everyone else because he has bigger goals and bigger dreams."

I would like to hang this up in my office, so every student I teach understands what it takes

also another affirmation of the importance of a stable/supportive home life and family (and in Karan's case...his family and extended family)

...the dude deserves a win (or two) against OSU - beginning in 2 1/2 weeks - make it happen!!
