Shooting near Diag

Submitted by Abe Froman on

I haven't seen this hit the news or social media yet and I know a lot of Michigan fans like myself get much of their Ann Arbor news from this site, so I thought I would send the community an update in case anyone is looking for more information.

I work on Campus near the corner of State Street and North University.  Around 930 PM I heard a large boom from my office.  It didn't sound like a gunshot at first, but within about a minute 3 police cars pulled up having traveled fast and with full lights and sirens on display.  I could hear officers instructing someone across the street to get on the floor, and though my view was obscured, I do believe this might have been a "guns drawn" type circumstance.  Within another 60 seconds another 4 to 5 police cars arrived on the seen, later followed by two ambulances.   The entire section of North University between State Street and Fletcher was taped off for a period of time and only emergency vehicles were let through.

Whatever the incident was, it seemed like it was resolved very quickly because after about 20 minutes about half of the police presence left.  As I write this I know vehicles are still on the scene.

I'm not sharing this to rubberneck or swirl speculation, but again I get much of my Ann Arbor news from this site and thought I would share in case others are seeking information about what happened this evening.

Crime is nothing new to that area.  One of my 9 lives passed before my eyes 30 years ago (summer 1987) as I exited the Michigan Union on South State at like 1:30 AM after Reggae Night.  Before me on South U was a brawl happening between two older white men who did not look like students or faculty, with three young black men who also did not appear be students (one appeared in his late 20s and the others were definitely high school).  As if by some act of God, the two white men suddenly fled, leaving me alone with their three adversaries, one of which suddenly walked up to me yelling something about my sneaking up on them.  He had a stiletto in hand.  His two younger comrades proceeded to yell "Cut him! Cut him!" and the older fellow swung at me, hitting me in the side of the head with the butt of the stiletto as I stood there incredulous (and drunk) with both hands up.  Had he chosen to hit me with the other side of the knife I wouldn't be here today.  By some other act of God, the younger comrades suddenly yelled "Cops! Run!" and they all fled, yet as I looked around in shock, I saw no cops.

As these were the days before cell phones, I just quietly walked home with blood pouring down my ear.

So yeah, not surprised that things aren't markedly better nowadays.

When I read this kind of news, I am glad that I bought a gun for self-defense. I hope that I'll never need it but it's better to have one just in case. The only negative aspect of owning a gun is that you need to spend a while learning how to shoot. And, also. cleaning takes a lot of time. Even with the right solvent, like those ones from this site.
