"When I was at Michigan, that was the main thing we worried about - tackling, being in the right position and fundamentals," Copenhaver said. "With Mattison, he's really going to concentrate on that. Every single day, we worked on tackling. There's a lot of teams across the country that don't work on tackling a lot. But we did every single day. Because it was the No. 1 thing involved in making a great defense. I think those are old-school tactics, and he'll bring that to Ann Arbor."

Yes please.

and knowing defensive assignments would be so refreshing.  I think most of us really miss the old days when the M defense was scary for opponents....hope we're back there soon!

That's right - we used to have a ton of Texas guys.  I remember once on Michigan Replay (I think) they showed all the Texas guys (there were like 15) standing up and singing "Deep in the Heart of Texas").  Jerrett Irons, Will Carr and Tommy Hendricks were three I remember from there.

Great article, it got me fired up to see how Michigan's D is going to over the next few years! I just wish Mattison was 10 years younger..

What has Greg Mattison done in the last ten years? He coached a National Championship defense and then went on to coach Ray Lewis, Terrelle Suggs, and Ed Reed. I think that experience is going to resonate with a lot of kids around the country who are going to say "Not only did this guy win a National Championship, but he also coached some pretty impressive NFL players." Mattison's experience is a large part of why he was a great hire. Let's hope he has a significant impact on the defense.

Man what a great read. It got me all pumped about football. I can't wait to see this team come September 2011. There's just a good vibe all over what's going on in A2 right now and I for one find it refreshing after the perpetual cloud that hung over A2 for the last 3 years. No attorneys or buyouts or rumors of shredded documents or double talk about breach of contract. Just a focus on football and going right out and rolling up the sleeves and gettin er done.

Until the Mattison re-hire I never knew that 1997 defense was a product of his training. That D was what won us the NC (yes they would have beaten UN with that D). The offense was good but the D was ferocious. Carr had some good defensive teams but not like the ones Mattison coached. I can't wait to see our D mauling people.

slappy when i comes to watching football. Thats what i loved most of the Carr era teams they always played great defense. I hoped the spread would succeed here, cause if we had a good defense with that offense no one in the country other than oregon could of touched us. Im just really excited to see dominant defense return to AA!

The spread did work. Like you said, if we had a good defense, everything would have been different. Our spread didn't dominate against the top tier big ten teams but not every good offense shines in every game.

Our defense for 2011 would have progressed anyways with RR. But now, the defense could really show up with MATTTTTIIISOONNNN. Hopefully we add some meat on Vinopal so he doesn't get knocked around nomo.

Our offense may have a transition year, or it may not?Noone knows but everyones back. I believe Stonum will be the star this season.

Our defense could show small improvements or a big improvement jumping into the top half of the Big 10+PSU/Nebraska conference. Noone knows how good or improved theyll be.

Anywhere between 12-14 wins is my guess. JK, but 9+ wins wouldnt fool me.

Bo was pretty upset we didn't try to claim Hoke in 2008, so he rewarded Hoke with a 12-0 regular season record. He now loves Hoke is here and will help coach UofM in heaven.

Hoke is Bo v2. Let the Ten Year War v2 begin too please.
