RB Preview in HTTV 2011
I was re-reading "Hail to the Victors" tonight, and came upon this passage, the last thing written in the preview for the Michigan running backs:
"Redshirt Sophomore Fitzgerald Toussaint also struggled with injury last year and seems to be far down the depth chart"

No fan saw the season Fitz had comingWell, I don't know about that. For a long time, there were practice rumblings that he was our most talented back. He just couldn't seem to ever stay healthy.

True, true. I think people saw or heard about his potential, but also knew of his injury bug. It was awesome that he pretty much stayed healthy all year, especially the last 3 games.

Fred Jackson called it.

Yeah, Fitzkrieg The Toose is Loose Toussaint is the only running back I've heard Jackson talk up, ever.

Have to agree here.. Fitz was my hype back ever since i saw his HS highlight tape...
A lot of people got down on him once he got injured, but i knew if he could get healthy he would produce some highlights similar to his HS tape, and he hasn't disappointed me.
I knew he would be the next great 1000 yard rusher for Michigan at some point

People got on my case for making two Fitz Toussaint MS Paint pics and saying he was our best option at RB

Now say a prayer that the S&C work or body maturation has finally paid off and we have 2 full years of Fitzkrieg left!

Before the season started I was pretty optimistic that one of our backs would break out for a 1,000 yard season. Of course, the back I had in mind was Stephen Hopkins.

Hopkins was given the ultimatum to switch to fullback or nothing and he really responded well to the challenge. He is stilll learning the position so he's going to keep getting better in the offseason. I'm excited for him.

It's a lot of fun to go back and read about how the season was "supposed" to go. Amazing how well they've exceeded expectations.

In Fitz Toussaint

I seem to remember a lot of fans here predicting a great year for Fitz. I wasn't one of them, though. I hoped he'd stay healthy, and knew he had potential, but didn't think he would emerge from the crowd as THE guy.

We'll have 3 rushers with over 1000 rushing yards.
I believe.

So much back and forth over the running backs while making that. Brian thought it would be Hopkins, I thought they'd end up platooning Shaw and Smith, and everybody wondered if Toussaint was just gonna have to wait his turn. There were times in Spring when there were flashes of Fitz but the unsaid thing was that his pass blocking was nowhere near Smith or Hopkins, who by the way are both excellent blockers.
It actually inspired me to write that whole "You Might Remember This Running Back from Such Former Players As" thing the beginning of this year.

I thought Rawls was going to be the guy.

I know that sounds annoying, but I did.

But really, next year Mike Cox is going to have an All-Big Ten year. Magnus said so. We're just going to get him a medical redshirt this year, then WATCH OUT.
(Just kidding, guy. I thought there was a chance he might finally see the light this year, too. I'm still a little curious about how he never got on the field, like, at all.)
