Playoff Chaos Scenario Unlocked: Who ya got and does the committee have the guts to make the right call?

Submitted by ImRightYouKnow on December 2nd, 2023 at 11:39 PM

Michigan and Washington, automatic ins.

FSU, deserves to be in.

One last spot that the committee is dying to give to Bama, but they'd have to go against all previous precedents set regarding head to head wins and undefeated P5 teams mattering.

Does the committee have the guts to make the right call and stonewall their SEC crushes?

I'm sorry and the committee may not agree but I completely disagree with the eye test being used to describe the four best teams.

Seriously??? Did anyone think Cincy was one of the four best?? No! That was resume - evidence-based earned and deserved.

How many of those committee eye testers thought Oregon would top Washington???

The eye test is bullshit. Your resume is who you are and what you deserve.

And people are talking about Bama firing on all cylinders. I'm sorry but as far as I'm concerned they lost to Auburn last week. A 6-6 squad who gave them a W anyways because the only team Auburn hates more than Bama is themselves.

If Bama really wanted in they had their chance to beat Texas and they lost. They don't deserve to get in over FSU who proved it every week on the field - no eye tests involved.

Any conference, any school, anyone would scream injustice at going undefeated in Power Five and being left out because somebody wanted to say they suffered a critical injury and they didn't deserve the opportunity to prove their mettle in the Big dance because of the eye test.

The best is not the eye test. It is your resume. Having the best win is not enough when it's paired with a ten point home loss to another contending squad and a virtual loss on the last week of the regular season when you were only bailed out by arguably the dumbest defensive play-call in modern history. Seriously, Auburn worked very hard to call the worst possible defense that could ever be imagined and they bailed out Bama.

Oh, and I've given a lot of slack to Warde because I'm not inside the program. But now he's on this committee. Not only does FSU deserve to be in, but M wants it too. He had better make sure the right result is made or he's lost me forever.

All the talking heads who are suggesting Washington over Michigan for #1 are idiots. These are the same people who all last week had Oregon beating Washington because Washington was limping to the finish… and now they are better than Michigan?!  Just crazy.

and the lengths they are going to get Alabama in over FSU is shameful

Based on watching the Georgia-Alabama game, those are two normal "good" teams.  Neither are anywhere in the vicinity of their recent peaks.  Nowhere near.  There was a mountain of slop in that game that was not there in recent matchups going back to 2017.

Add to that Bama's head to head loss to Texas and the list should be 1. Michigan, 2. Washington, 3/4. Texas, 3/4. FSU.

The SEC is weak relative to its normal level this year and it's top end is not super elite.

I could see logical arguments for the following:

1) Washington

2) Texas

3) Alabama

4) Michigan

Part of me suspects that the committee will not equivocate their chance to pit the B1G champ and the last Pac champ against each other in the Rose Bowl. I also doubt they leave out the SEC champ, and in turn they’ll feel like they can’t not include Texas - that’d require Bama jumping OVER Texas to land in the top four. I think they’ll leave out FSU because it’s the team that everyone is most likely to forgive them for leaving out.

I say Michigan at #4 because they could say the closing stretch left lots of questions about our offense, while each of the other teams would have ended their season with more well-rounded performances against better teams. That wouldn’t be entirely true, but such is life.

I want to be clear that I mean no offense or disrespect when I say this: This is the stupidest thing I have ever read.

Michigan isn’t going to be jumped by a single team after finishing the year as an undefeated P5 champion via a 26-0 victory over the #15 team. They certainly aren’t going to be jumped by two 1-loss teams!

The committee doesn’t rank teams based on who played the best in their most recent game. It’s the totality of the season. And record matters to the committee. Even if the committee truly did believe that Texas and Alabama were better than Michigan, the difference between Michigan being undefeated and the other 2 having a loss would prevent them from doing anything about it.

It's a nasty choice.  I can make a cogent argument for any of FSU, Alabama or Texas by prioritizing different factors (who is playing best right now? who has the best mountain of skulls? who will attract the most viewers and in which matchup? etc.)

The sec lost its two marquee out of conference games. FSU won against LSU, and Texas against Alabama. Both of those sec losses were by double digits. IMO, the only reason the sec is even in the conversation is because of inflated rankings.

I know it’s not about the most deserving teams, but it’s also hard to argue that the most deserving are not also the best teams.

BTW, how anyone can argue that Alabama is really all that good when they needed a last second prayer to beat an auburn team that had just gotten steam rolled by New Mexico State at home is beyond me.
