OT: #WakeyLeaks

Submitted by jimmyshi03 on

If you recall, Wake Forest alleged after their game with Louisville that the Cardinals had somehow obtained elements of their gameplan in an illicit manner. So the school investigated. And they discovered who the leaker was...

Their own radio color man.

Tommy Elrod played at Wake, for Jim Caldwell, then became a GA and later QB coach for Jim Grobe. He was not retained when Dave Clawson took over and became a radio color guy. And, it seems, he wasn't happy about it. He did this, it seems, for years.

Somehow, I can't imagine Dan Deirdorf or Terry Mills doing this.

Elrod:  Pssst! Coach. I've got something for you.

Coach:  What you got?

Elrod:  I've got Wake's game plan. You'll know what play to o expect before the guy in Wake's huddle.

Coach:  Wake's game plan!?

Elrod:  It's all here

Coach: Wake Forest? The team with the worst all time winning percentage of any Power 5 school in the country?

Elrod:  Well ... yeah ... but ....

Coach:  Nah. We're good.

What, just what, did this dooshbag think he was getting in return from... Louisville?

I mean, what on EARTH do Louisville coaches like to give out for favors ... hmmmmm... what on Earth could it be .... ?

Such a crazy story. You have to think that Louisville must've taken this information with a serious grain of salt. I wouldn't trust a guy that connected openly trying to tell me information. Given the whole story about him being replaced, I can understand how somebody would be pissed. He got a pretty decent job out of the whole thing, though, and he's a wake forest guy. I can't imagine anybody doing this at a big school like Michigan.

Have you tried listening to a football broadcast on the radio lately? I don't think Dierdorf could tip off the opposing team on what day of the week the game will be played at this point.

While this is completely unbelievable, just consider for a moment that all teams give the networks broadcasting their game full access, too. We "know" that certain networks have an "interest" in who wins certain games (and conferences). Is it that far fetched to believe that this happens more of then than we might think? If you doubt that, consider for one moment that Urban Meyer was just such a person given full access to our program and then weeks (was it even weeks, plural?) later was named head coach of our main rival.

Poor Tommy.  I guess he can kiss his career goodbye.

Wake has an outstanding defense and one of the best coaching staffs anywhere. Dave Clawson is an excellent program builder. He took Bowling Green from 2-10 to conference champs in 3 years, improving each year, all on the back of the defense. And he has used the same defensive coordinator, Mike Elko, the whole time. With this scandal out of the way, I hope we see Wake Forest break through next year. They had a season that can be called both good and disappointing this past year. Perhaps they are ready to take the next step forward and compete in the ACC.
