OT: Superbowl Food
Looking for some ideas for food for Sunday. The past couple we have done ribs, but have decided to change it up this year. I was thinking wings....does anyone know of a place in Ann Arbor that has cheap and good wings. BW3's charges $38 for 50...Mr. Spots charges $8/dozen. Am I missing a place Ann Arbor?
Also, what is your spread going to be this year.

A good chili is always a good food to have for the SB. I usually go homemade, but I'm sure you can find somewhere in AA that would have a good chili.
February 4th, 2011 at 3:46 PM ^
In addition to snacks/chips/veggie plate/etc.
I'd second the chili idea
February 4th, 2011 at 3:49 PM ^
To tell you the truth, I don't think I have ever had a chicken chili. Sounds like it would be good though. We make a chili that is pretty similar to Wendy's chili but with more heat and bite to it. Good stuff.
February 4th, 2011 at 4:03 PM ^
Prepare it like you would steak chili, with the chicken cut into pieces. I like that a bit more than shredding the chicken. Either way, you can't go wrong with Chili!
February 4th, 2011 at 4:26 PM ^
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 onion, chopped
- 3 cloves garlic, crushed
- 1 (4 ounce) can diced jalapeno peppers
- 1 (4 ounce) can chopped green chile peppers
- 2 teaspoons ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
- 2 (14.5 ounce) cans chicken broth
- 3 cups chopped cooked chicken breast
- 1 cup shredded monterey jack cheese
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- Remove the mixture from heat. Slowly stir in the cheese until melted. Serve warm
- Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium-low heat. Slowly cook and stir the onion until tender. Mix in the garlic, jalapeno, green chile peppers, cumin, oregano and cayenne. Continue to cook and stir the mixture until tender, about 3 minutes. Mix in the chicken broth, chicken and beans, and corn. Simmer 15 minutes, stirring occasionally
It was pretty good, I like a little kick and the 1 teaspoon of cayenne still had a little kick. 2 was delicious, but too hot for most people. Most of the heat comes from the Cayenne, if you need to cook for a blander palate/party/whatever, just cut some cayenne. 2/3tsp let you know it was there, but not much else. 1tsp i'd say is a 2.5-3 out of 5 on a spicy scale. 2tsp was delicious, but closer to a 4.5/5 for most people

Nice. Thanks for sharing this. I will definitely have to try this.
February 4th, 2011 at 4:41 PM ^
It's a white-bean-chicken-chili.
The salsa is optional, just gives it some more color. Let me know how it goes! It took 3rd place at a work chili cook off this week, but 1st place in recipes requested. I think it might have been too hot for most palates here
February 4th, 2011 at 4:43 PM ^
That's awesome. Yeah I will definitely let you know.

it's not just for Easter anymore.
Lamb anything is good.

I suggest Chinese food. We're going with an all asian menu this year (except for snacks) with catering from TK Wu. Excited. I've heard that Casey's Tavern has really good wings, but I'm not sure about the pricing of them.
February 4th, 2011 at 3:57 PM ^
I find the wings to be average.
February 4th, 2011 at 4:47 PM ^
delicious
February 4th, 2011 at 3:49 PM ^
being a recent college graduate i don't have a ton of money, so i was thinking sliders would be pretty good and kinda cheap...
February 4th, 2011 at 3:50 PM ^
You have to have beer too. I prefer craft breweries but the likes of Bud Light / Miller Lite, etc. will work also.
February 4th, 2011 at 4:27 PM ^
luckily I have the Sam Winter Sampler and some Goose Island 312 in the fridge just in case...
February 4th, 2011 at 4:38 PM ^
The Sam Winter Sampler is a good one. I have some Leinenkugel's Limited Golden Lager that I just got last night and some assorted Dogfish Head and Flying Dog brews. Plus a few other random bottles of craft beer that I bought a few weeks ago.
February 4th, 2011 at 4:43 PM ^
Was delicious. I tried it a couple years ago when it was in the big fancy bottle, and I got really excited when I saw it in the sampler. I was glad that it replaced the cranberry lambic too. I'm also a bigger fan of the White Ale than the Noble Pils... so I hope that the White Ale is available this spring as well
February 4th, 2011 at 4:44 PM ^
I agree that the Chocolate Bock is delicious. The White Ale is definitely a different tasting beer. Not bad, but one that is very unique.

If you can't find good wings, or want to do something different I highly recommend this buffalo chicken dip. I would eat it all day if I could.

Excellent call on the Franks Buffalo Chicken Dip, Tom.
That stuff is always a hit with us on poker night.
You guys can trust Tom on this, you won't be disappointed.
February 4th, 2011 at 4:05 PM ^
I seriously almost make this once a week. Except I boil my own chicken (2 pieces) and double up on the hot sauce and ranch.
We will also be having brisket, bratwurst, and jalapeno cheese sausage.
February 4th, 2011 at 4:06 PM ^
Do you know when it's going to announce?
.. hang on this is wrong
February 4th, 2011 at 4:13 PM ^
...found in most grocery stores works very well also. Quick, easy, and make sure it's fresh.
February 4th, 2011 at 11:16 PM ^
is far better than the processed chicken from a can IMO.

I make chili and wings every year and I'm worn out on them.
This year I'm making BBQ Beef on Kaiser Rolls.
Michelob Light and Crown Royal for drinks.

This is my favorite meal but I am tempted to make it for the party I am going to (double batch). This is pretty easy and somewhat healthy.
Buffalo Chicken Pasta (Serves 4-6)
- 3/4 Bottle of Franks Red Hot Buffalo (add/sub to adjust hotness)
- 1/4 cup of Light Ranch (add/sub to alter taste)
- 2 boxes of Ronzoni Smart Taste Penne Pasta
- 4 boneless chicken breasts
- Salt
- 1/4 cup of parmesan cheese
1.) Boil pasta in salted water until tender, drain in strainer and set aside
2.) On a George Foreman grill, grill chicken and cube up into cubes, set aside
3.) In a sauce pan or pot, add buffalo and ranch together and mix -- you can adjust the amount of buffalo/ranch depending on how hot you want it
4.) Add pasta and chicken to the sauce and mix together
5.) Top with a bit of parmesan cheese

This is an awesome thread. I am sitting at my desk hungry, now.
First, if you are in the AA area, I can't see doing anything other than Mr. Spots. In my opinion, the best wings, bar none (and let me tell you friend, in the 3.4 decades I have been on this planet, I have had my fair share of wings).
But, if you are thinking of other options, my wife is making her own modified version of empenadas, but to make them more couch / game friendly, she makes mini-empenadas. These are a huge hit, and I have basically been told that if she does not have them, the 3 other couples coming over to watch the game will turn around and leave.
Let me explain what these are:
You get ground beef, cook it in a pan with a mix of ground up onion, garlic, some other spices and a few cans of tomato pasta.
Once that is done, you but a pie crust. Take the crust, roll it really thin and then cut it into circles that are about 2-3 inches in diameter. Place a spoonful of the meat into the middle, roll the circle-shaped piece of pie-crust closed (making like a half-moon shapped mini meat pie) and bake in the oven until the outside is golden brown.
These things are amazing, and you can eat them sitting on a coach watching the game. (If anyone wants the full recipe, respond, and I will call my wife and ask her to post it).

Man my mouth is watering from reading this. Those sound so freaking good.
February 6th, 2011 at 11:23 PM ^
Those sound seriously good. If these are as good as they sound, then your wife awesome.
Recipe please.
Oh, and I just described them to my friends who are cming over for the game, and they are also in agreement.

Best. Wife. Ever.
Nice.
February 4th, 2011 at 4:13 PM ^
...but I going to be making sour cream, cheddar, and spicy ground sausage stuffed jalapeno poppers wrapped in bacon...arteries be damned.
Also, pulled pork sandwiches, chicken wings, and plenty of booze. But let's be honest here, the poppers are the star of the show.
February 4th, 2011 at 4:25 PM ^
Care to post the recipe?
February 4th, 2011 at 4:32 PM ^
All I do is half the cream cheese and replace with shredded sharp cheddar.

I normally like cream cheese poppers better, but I'll give this a go.

Venison chili, chicken wings BBQ gold style and of course some tanqueray
February 4th, 2011 at 4:17 PM ^
If you're a gin guy, try Hendrick's.
February 4th, 2011 at 4:30 PM ^
But Beefeater works as well (my wallet sure enjoys it better)
February 4th, 2011 at 4:33 PM ^
Agreed -- I usually go with Tanqueray or Bombay, however on occasion I'll go with Hendrick's. It definitely isn't cheap.
February 4th, 2011 at 11:41 PM ^
I've had my fair share of beefeater in my day! Certainly a bargain with plenty kick.
February 4th, 2011 at 11:39 PM ^
Thank you for the insight man. I'll be taking you up on that for sure.

Anybody have a different take on nachos than the usual? I've been looking for a new recipe but nothing seems to be the ticket just yet.
I'm going turkey chili, buffalo chicken dip, seven-layer dip, and wings. This link is an absolute Godsend if you're looking for a unique take on football food: http://sarahsprague.com/2011/02/03/the-ultimate-football-foodie-super-bowl-recipe-guide-for-steelers-packers-party-2011/

Add a smoked leg or thigh but remove it pull the meat off and return w/o tendons and bones to the pot
February 4th, 2011 at 4:46 PM ^
Hot damn that's a good idea. Thanks.
February 4th, 2011 at 5:15 PM ^
I have made this several times. The salsa is motherfu**ing hot but excellent. It may seem a little fussy what with arranging the chips, but it's really good.

blue corn/sesame tortillas
grilled flank steak (marinated in lime), chopped
chopped vidalia onion
cored/chopped jalapeno
topped with shredded sharp cheddar, goat cheese, avocado, and liberally doused with Cholula.
February 4th, 2011 at 4:42 PM ^
I use thighs because they cook evenly and are easy to handle w/o a plate

Coat in flour -then in egg mixed w a little milk and some tabasco -then again in seasoned flour. Letm rest to dry while heating oil to 375. Do not crowd the skillet; flip pieces over after 12 minutes or so and do the other side. Drain on paper towels

I'm making a Double Decker Tacos/Fajita Bar!
Meats: Brisket (under-rated for tacos), Steak, Chicken, Fish (blackened)
Veggies: Peppers (green, red, yellow), Jalapenos (fresh cut), Onion, tomatoes
sour cream
cheese (freshly grated)
salsa (made fresh)
guacamole (made fresh)
Beans
Heat up tortillas, paste with beans, add hard shell taco, wrap flour tortilla on taco and you have yourself a Double Decker Taco! Doesn’t matter if hard shell breaks, actually prefer it to break because it holds more of the aforementioned goods above. Anyways, you can add and take away whatever you would like. Easily tailored and something for everybody. Pretty inexpensive too and it will serve a lot!
Add in some Coronas or Dos Equis w/margaritas for the chics and you have yourself a SuperBowl Fiesta! If you don’t have any chics, invite this guy, he’ll come through!
