OT- Game of Thrones S05 E05: Kill the Boy

Submitted by Eastside Maize on

Happy Mamas Day! Cersei and Margaery are vying for control of the King. Tommen looked really weak last week. Those Sand Snakes are beautiful and deadly.........vengeance for Obeyren! The Mother of Dragons has her hands full and might be desperate enough to release her two dragons. Same Bat-time, same Bat-channel.

I haven't been very impressed with this season so far. I haven't been a fan of the different directions that the show has been going. Hoping for better tonight.

I have all the episodes on my DVR, my wife would kill me if I started watching without her.  However, I have felt like the show had started a steady decline since the end of the 2nd season.  The frustrating thing is, I have read the first book but now have no interest to read the remaining books.  That may not be fair but that's what the show has done to me.

I can't say too much because I hate when people post spoilers. It certainly isn't lack of action, if anything I think the show goes overboard with that. Several storylines are diverging massively from the books, and so far I don't see the purpose. One of them seems like doing it just to be cute, and I hate that.

I'm not big on reading for entertainment purposes, but I'll probably read the books after the series ends. From what I've heard, they're moving in different directions. And I like the series and don't want to read spoilers or get the two mixed up. I actually hope they go way different directions and I can read the books as sort of a more in depth view/alternate ending sort of thing. I'm sure many disagree.

I'll admit to having a hard time wrapping my mind around a book and TV series going in different directions at the same time. Which is canon? Probably silly on my part.

I've read all the books up till now but kind of lost interest in the TV show after the Theon/reek episode. Too violent for my tastes. Id like the books to go somewhere but after awhile I time out waiting for them.

I basically scratch the itch with recaps and wikis when I'm curious.

Given the TV series will actually end and the book series likely will not, I'll go with the TV series.  I appreciate the ride George R.R. Martin has taken me on and the first three books were sublime but it's getting harder to have faith he'll overcome his writers block.

I understand taking his time to "get it right" so to say, but good grief he is SLLLOOOOWWWW.  He's pulled his attention in so many directions now, I sometimes wonder if he really even WANTS to write the books anymore.   It's almost like he's trapped in a prison of his own making, and he doesn't know how to get out.

I'm totally fine with the choices they have made.

Fact of the matter is, Martin keeps writing in new storylines in characters, which is now part of the problem as he tries to bring the books to a close.  The show needed to remove a massive number of characters while condensing some important details together.  This has meant changing some storylines.

Book Spoiler:

For example, it doesn't bother me one bit that Jorah now has greyscale which is a significant change from the books, or that Barristan died.  It might not end up the same in the books, but did anyone ever think he was going to play *that* big a role in the upcoming books?

The show seems to be clearing space for Jorah to return to Dany, while also continuing to include the greyscale predicament even though they eliminated the characters previously affected by it.  The books were never that well suited for TV largely because of the sprawling and ever-growing storylines/cast of characters.  It had to be changed to be suitable for television.

I am not as excited about the episodes as I used to be...

here we go with barristan

edit:  so far so good tonight, a lot of set up but I dig it.

that was a pretty good episode.

the greyscale thing is building momentum.  I am one of the people who think greyscale is going to end up killing a lot of people in this series... I also have crackpot theory that stone men will fight wrights at some point... crazy, but possible.

This episode just got much better.

Pretty evident to me.  Tyrion's storyline was pretty rapidly condensed.  Introducing that many new characters and slowing down his travels that much would not have translated to the TV very well, imo.  Of course, this leads me to wonder if the character in question is a pretender, not that important in the long run of the books, or if we have totally veered off from the books at this point.

I've never read the books. But they're acting like Baratheon will easily march in to Winterfell and kill Ramses... I'm betting the opposite- Baratheon loses and Jon Snow returns with the wildlings and takes Winterfell

It's slow right now, but I like the storyline they are building up.

I apologize if I misspelled names. I haven't read the books and I'm typing on an iphone with a cracked screen. Gave it the ol' college try

As if this season even mirrors the books...

I just shake my head every episode as a book reader even though I know that they said they're veering off of the books in their own direction. Still burns...

Hurry up GRRM and finish those books.

But I have watched the entire season already (I know someone at HBO who got me the entire season on DVD), and to those that have any level of disappointment in this season thus far...Episodes 8, 9 and 10 are AWESOME. Definitely worth waiting for!!

I like this season. What it lacks in action it makes up for with a nice set up and subtle forshadowing. I liked the scene where Maester Aemon was lamenting that Danerys would be the last Targaryen when he dies. Not knowing that he might have a great nephew with him at Castle Black. I'm waiting for Cersei to deal with the last 2 of her children's golden shrouds.

I loved the Mad King like insights we got of Daenerys. First of her having that Meereen noblemen burned alive. Then Maester Aemon saying how dangerous it is for a lone Targaryen to be out in the world.

Ive read books 1-3 but stopped at that point, so Im not sure if this is something the books do or the show is setting up for itself. But they really seem to be doing a lot to make Stannis more likeable/relatable while setting Daeny up for a fall of some sorts. When I say fall, I do not mean in that she gets conquered. But more so that her personality shifts and she becomes more cold and cruel. Who knows, in a season or two people may be rooting for the free folk and Stannis as they battle the crazy dragon queen. Or the others will have already invaded. Who knows.

Really, really good episode though. I also have a feeling that this season, or at least before the books,  there is going to be a Jon Snow's true parent(s) reveal.

Good episode overall, but the weaknesses of the story telling and wasted story archs drive me nuts.  I am not a GOT book reader, so my speculation is based off how I see the show going.   First off, I loved the Dany dragon scenes but I have a feeling that with all of the talk this season about the Mad King, that they are going to have Dany become a mad queen.  I don't like that direction at all, but I get that vibe totally.  I really like Jon Snow, but I think the decision to let the Wildlings come through will ultimately lead to his demise.  I won't like this direction also if it happens as I feel like it would be yet another waste of a good character.  The Greyworm/ Misande stuff is another waste of time plot device, and they better have some real payoff there or I am calling BS.  The Tyrion/ Jorah stuff was also a let down.  Overall, it was an average episode and I am not liking the direction of the show.  I feel that in the end, the game for the iron throne is ulimately uneventful, and like Jon said, the real battle is against the white walkers.  Whoever wins the game of thrones has to unite everyone in that fight or everyone dies.  Unfortunately, I don't think any of these clowns has what it takes to lead everyone, and the characters that do will be killed off in really crappy ways.  I hope I am wrong, as I think the show is beautifully shot, really well directed, and well acted, but I am unsure about the writing, and I don't think the end game has been fully thought through.

The funny thing about it is that people on here bash network tv, and only heap praises on cable shows.  But to me, the 2 best shows on tv ar on network in Person Of Interest and Hannibal.  Person of Interest is amazing in how it gets markedly better each season, it's 22 eps a season, yet manages to have very little filler, and it's a wholly original series that keeps pushing the envelope, and the 4th season finaleis how you do a finale and tie up loose ends.  GOT could learn a thing from Jonathan Nolan.

I hope that is the case because I do think he would be the only one to unite everyone.  I just don't see it happenning though,  I still think he will die and it will piss me off.  I agree with you that GOT is still one of the better shows on right now, but i would have to disagree with the Walking Dead.  I would put that in the bottom half of my top 10.  It can still deliver an awesome episode from time to time, but there is just way to much filler in my opinion.

I couldn't argue that the missandei/grey worm stuff is not at all important. However, I'm surprised people care so much: it took up 3-4 minutes tonight. Big deal.

Tyrion/jorah just got hooked together and I thought last night's arc with them was awesome. The eerie shots of old Valyria, the poem they shared of its doom and how it seems to foreshadow possible outcomes in westerns unless people figure their shit out. The attack of the stone men and the penultimate fade to black before we are pulled from the Sopranos-esque end... Only to see Jorah has grey scale. Pretty awesome if you ask me.

I actually think the grey worm stuff is important because I think they are now going to throw him into the Selmy line of the books, where Selmy ain't dead and has a big role coming up. He is at least one of two other known candidates for it right now.

My other guess, and the more likely guy to do it is now, Tyrion. Either way, will be interesting to see how they pull that off.
