she never took the ruby off in the book, however she did explain how much of her power came from it and the great pains she went through...

I think she took it off because she has lost faith in the Red God.

I think it simbolizes this break and I think that much like Thoros with Dondurron this break will lead to true power from Rhollor.

I see it as a precursor to Johns ressurection.

I am going to assume that only when the Red priests and priestesses break are they finally rewarded by Rhollor...

so, my intuition is that the Ruby represents 'the facade' of the religion and that by returning to her 'true' self, she signifies her loss of faith... Therefore I assume she will be rewarded much like Thoros and John will be ressurected.

In short...

Doran!!!!

I'm kinda upset, but on the flip side it's cool that the Doran revenge storyline will be book exclusive. That's one thing to keep in mind with the adaptation surpassing the novels. They are diverging. Yes, some stuff will be spoiled, but not everything since the two are different beasts now.

Go, Davos, go!

Very solid "re-set" episode while still providing quite the punch.

Areo Hotah dying that easily put me off the rest of the storyline.  Although I think it now sets up Drone to be the invading mercenary army without introducing yet another major player and sets up the same sort of threat as the rambunctious iron islander invasion if done right.  I didn't like them making Prince Doran that ineffectual as in the books he is  is kind of a badass, but if you have Indira Varma you have to use her, so I get it, if not 100% on board with it.

had to go to Tower of the Hand first...

but, here goes...

Hotah is a beast and shouldn't have went out like that... but that was the only weak sauce.  And it got rid of dumbass darkstarless dorne...

I'm looking forward to next week with dragons, war at castle black, and the twins raging on the faith.

"Terrible" is awfully strong.  Why terrible?

First, it had to pull together a LOT of strings. Most episodes leave out a thread or two, this opener had them all, so it couldn't go crazy with all of them.

Brienne of fucking Tarth FINALLY completes her quest, or at least now will have a shot at completing it.

Poor damn Quentyn Tristane Martell.

I thought they did the Night's Watch scenes very well.  They had to cross some T's and dot some I's about how that could go down without a full war and I thought they did so without too much suspension of disbelief. Looking forward to the showdown.

I could have done for a bit more of a "bang" with the closing scene, but hey I'm not complaining too much.

maybe terrible is too strong, but I'm not one for the having to tie up all the loose strings approach. they really weren't very loose, as nothing surprising happened. You can continue a story without spoon-feeding your audience. don't need a bang, but for me it didn't create that desire for more. thought the dialogue was boring

BTW, I'm guessing Daenerys thought that as a widowed Khaleesi she had some status, but didn't realize she gets to retire to Vaes Dothrak. She better hope her ride tires of mutton and wants some horsemeat to go.

Dany actually is aware of the dosh khaleen and Vaes Dothrak (see S1 Ep. 6 - "A Golden Crown"). Also, when Drogo dies in S2, I think Dany was told that she will be expected to return to Vaes Dothrak and join the dosh khaleen, although she refused. Her dragons were what initially attracted the Dothraki to her cause, and will likely play a role in Vaes Dothrak - it will be fun to see.

I would give the episode a solid B.  Good start to the season.  I always love it when they give the good guys a win from time to time.  Brienne and Pod saving Sansa and Theon was probably my favorite part of the ep.  Davos is another favorite, and he was representing tonight.  Danny's storyline looks like it finally might be getting interesting, hopfully they up the pace on her story.  The Dorne stuff was awful last season, and they made it just meh last night, which is an improvement.  Arya storyline looks like she is channelling Daredevil's training.  Hope her story picks up the pace, because I haven't been interested in her since she was palling around with the hound.   Melisandre, all I can say is ewwwwww.

I'm wating for the time Arya finally kicks that bitch's arse - a la Daredevil.

For those who understand these things better than I - why coudn't Melisandra bring Jon back the way the Brotherhood's priest-type brought back their leader way back in S.2 or S.3?

And somone posted above that Jon is going to walk from his funeral pyre like Catelyn did - but there's never been a hint or suggestion of Cat doing that on the show, just from spoilers. Has that happened already in the books?

I've heard of the R+L=JS theory, mostly from here and other chats. My confusion is isn't R Dany's father? Or was he a much older brother? Without reading the books the Targareon line is confusing...

Also, shouldn't the (formerly known as) Red Lady be able to bring Jon back the same way the Brotherhood did? I'm confused about branches of the Red Religion too?

It's funny how some people on here say the show drags through storylines while others say it races through...  or even, as in the Bran story line runs far ahead of the books.

For me, they can stretch the show out another 10 years and be really thorough - I'll stay with em!!!

Rhaegar was the older brother to Daenerys and Viserys.

Melisandre (the red priestess) may yet be the one to revive Jon. We've gone beyond the books so who knows. Jon is most likely Azor Ahai that she's been rambling on about for years (the prophecy she thought Stanis would fulfill.

He's coming back. Whatever way it happens is surely to reignite Mel's flame and she will assist him in the upcoming battles.

Thanks for that clarification - but if L is JS mother, then isn't Lady Cat technically his "auntie" as well?

That was part of my confusion - I mean in addition to not being able to tell all the generations of Targareons apart.

I had heard chat that Cat was making a comeback, before S.5, but that's getting to be pretty far in the past now I guess...

"There will come a day after a long summer when the stars bleed and the cold breath of darkness falls heavy on the world. In this dread hour a warrior shall draw from the fire a burning sword. And that sword shall be Lightbringer, the Red Sword of Heroes, and he who clasps it shall be Azor Ahai come again, and the darkness shall flee before him."

Again, my $ is on Jon walking out of that pyre holding a raised, burning Longclaw/Lightbringer.
