I am wary of this as well. For all the talk I see about a Michigan money cannon, I'm just not sure the floodgates opening means Michigan's cannon is suddenly going to start firing.

The programs who were already finding creative ways to shoot their cannons are just going to be even more empowered while the hesitant programs will be waiting to feel things out, making sure they aren't compromising their brands, and (continuing to) fall behind.

EGJ - And just how will the UM prez have any say in this? Or the AD for that matter? I thought the door was open for kids to make deals and the school is NOT a participant?

I know you want to be Negative Nancy but not seeing the university having ANY voice in the NIL deals.

But someone will correct me if I’m wrong!

This. Folks are just beating their tired horses when it comes to their ways to create complaints. If anything, the NIL has already helped with the Barstool connection. Michigan is a brand like Oregon, so as soon as any athlete shows out in September they’re going to find endorsements.

We are going to see Race for the Heisman sponsorships from Nissan once players start playing.

Broadneck, how will they advertise themselves without them wearing their team uni’s? I would imagine any heisman campaign would have the player in their uniforms. Wouldn’t they have to share the money with their respective teams? Obviously I have no clue how this will work. Sounds like there will be problems with copyrights.

You are making my point in a tangential manner.  While I'm sure you are correct that kids can make deals and the school is not a participant, however, I can see us being very hands off vs. other schools ASSISTING the kids with sponsorship deals, helping to line up their alumni to sponsor athletes, etc., while I can see us not taking such an active role OR the president admonishing the AD if they try to do certain types of sponsorship at it may "soil" the academic reputation of Michigan.  I would love to be wrong.

Nike wants to make money. I’m sure some of their advertising dollars will find their way to Ann Arbor.

Phil Knight, as an Oregon guy, can support OU athletics. Nike, as a corporate entity, has a fiduciary duty to it’s shareholders. Nike’s cannon will be going off at all the Nike schools. Last I checked, we were a Jumpman school.

A money cannon = the NFL. I think college players should benefit financially but I fear the college football that I've loved will be gone with deals like this. The playing field hasn't been level for a while, with only a few teams hovering at the top, and that will just get worse with the money cannon.

It's already exploding on the scene. It's money, real money, hand over fist! I know you can't feel or see it. It's one of those things that you feel the concussion when you look back at it years later. Oh, never doubt it! It is there already now. It's one of those things dogs can hear, but not humans.

That's about as sarcastic as I can get this tired after work.

I’m looking forward to the not so distant future in which none of this is news, the power teams all have their money canons optimized, and players choose their schools based on fit only.

Those who think this kind of individual deal won’t be destructive of unity and cohesion on any team are fooling themselves. Even a superficial acquaintance with human nature would tell you it’s inevitably going to lead to jealousy, envy, resentment, and a loss of focus.

And then the student-athletes will have to face the same realities as the rest of us did when we joined the work force, that is, some people are simply worth more than others.  Just because we may want to see altruism in our college athletics doesn't mean that the participants can't exercise their rights to work within the system to make money.  Who knows where CFB will wind up after this, but I'll bet that kids will still want to compete and will accept the concept of differential worth.  If you think money is going to wreck CFB, bear in mind that money has always been part of college football, well that, and girls.

Welcome to the era of high school kids auctioning themselves to schools with the wealthiest patrons. Because more money is sure to fix all the problems that more money has brought to amateur athletics.
