M lacrosse commit commits to ND for football
2021 La Jolla (CA) Bishop's School quarterback Tyler Buchner was committed to Michigan for lacrosse, but he's one of those guys who's good at a lot of stuff. Despite an offer to play QB at Michigan, he flipped to Notre Dame's stupid football team. He also has offers from Alabama and USC. 247 Sports has him as a 4-star, the #2 pro-style QB, and #49 overall.
I swear, the world of college lacrosse recruiting has gone to shit. Back in my day, a lacrosse commitment actually meant something...
He had a Michigan football offer but he comitted to the lacrosse team?
He was committed to the Michigan lacrosse team before the Michigan football team extended an offer.
Dupe
No doubt that he will win 2 Heisman trophies, right beano!!!
He said Pawlus would win four Heismans.
He was pretty close...he only came up four short.
If he had stayed for a 5th year, he could have won 5!!!
If here were on the Ed Davis plan he would have won 6 or more.
Why would the #49 overall football player ever even commit to play lacrosse?
The word commit, you keep using it, im not sure it means what you think it means.
Such a baffling post title.
So we lost a lacrosse scholarship commit, who became a ND football commit? Was he ever considered for football here? Aren't they both Fall sports? Seems Harbaugh would have taken a recruit away from lacrosse.
I am confused.
He’s finishing his sophomore year of high school. He’s more confused than you are
Lacrosse is a spring sport...
The OP answers your question: "Despite an offer to play QB at Michigan . . . ."
Reading comprehension FTW.
That explains his stellar point total.
I think the fail belongs to you.
I was criticizing the title only. His explanation about an offer to play football muddies it up more. So... he was offered a football scholarship in addition to the lacrosse scholarship? Ok, that clears it up for everyone. How many scholarships to the same school can he take?
Incidentally, if he was worthy in both sports, it would have been interesting to see how it would play out. He could save the football program 1 scholarship if he took the lacrosse offer. But then I'm sure Harbaugh wouldn't want a QB risking injury playing lacrosse.
I'm pretty sure scholarships don't work that way. My understanding is if you play FB or BB and another sport your scholarship is counted against the FB or BB limit. I'm not sure what they do if your 2 sports are FB and BB. Alabama would have a badminton team if they could get additional scholarships for their FB team.

Correct.
The difference is a full ride for football... and only a partial ride for lacrosse. There are many more kids on a lacrosse roster than the NCAA allows scholarships for.
Some super star lacrosse players get full scholarships. Very rare but does happen. This guy is on that level, as a freshmen playing against senior D1 commits. My son played against him last year.
A sign of how big lax is getting, top players in football and soccer are also playing lax in the spring.
Whispers: JJ McCarthy is better
Agree. JJ looks like a natural, elite passer. He also has outanding agility.
I thought ND was the leader for JJ. Do you think Buchner’s ND decision puts UM in the lead for JJ?
Yeah I do, kind of. It at least means it’s not ND. He’s got an OSU offer as well.
An elite QB like JJ would start the 2021 class in the right direction. Then add Edwards, Payne or another strong MI kid to build momentum.
Wisconsin's back up QB was going to go to ND for lacrosse but then Harbaugh started recruiting him. He wasn't on anyone's radar. But, that was that - football was all over him after that. The good news is - he's not on ND's team now!
