Latest on McGuffie??

Submitted by Six Zero on
Cold, quiet Monday morning here after the bitter weekend... So has anyone heard the latest on #2? How's he doing after the game? Hurt? Actually got the concussion on the big shot as so many implied he did? Or did he just sit in light of Minor taking control of the position? More importantly, after last week, has anything happened in Schembechler Hall since the team returned home? I suspect if he told any coaches he might have done it by now... or will he wait til today or tomorrow? I was certainly hoping to see him get in the game and get some reps and really have a chance to get a good taste of the rivalry-- certainly didn't happen. In fact, nothing positive happened on the field to perhaps sway his motivation, but I'd like to see him stay. The 2009 SEASON HAS ALREADY BEGUN!!!! THE SLATE IS CLEAN!! GO BLUE!

I don't think McGuffie sat because of Minor, because Minor didn't get a whole lot of carries in the second half. Shaw was really the featured back after halftime. I don't know how many kickoff returns McGuffie has, but he's been ROCKED on the two that I remember. He fumbled on one, and then he got a concussion (I'm guessing) on this one. He ought to have better vision than that. Even though Odoms and Cissoko can't handle the ball, either, at least they haven't been totally destroyed.

Well played. Seriously, though, one of the Rivals guys (Chris Balas, I think) mentioned that McGuffie needs to learn to avoid the big hit. He doesn't seem to have adjusted to the college game and the faster tempo quite yet. But he's only a freshman, so I imagine his vision will improve in the coming years.

Welcome to Big Ten football, Sam. You have to be tough to make it in this conference. Our rivals aren't going take it easy while we're down.

Speaking of McGuffie's concussions, I believe that his most recent one makes 3 on the season, right? Toledo, MSU and OSU. That's getting into the area of concern for lasting health effects. If I recall correctly, depending on their severity, 3 or more concussions over the course of one's life carries significantly increased risk of all sorts of problems like depression, Alzheimer's, and loss of memory. I certainly hope that he's okay and will be able to continue to play safely, whether at UM or somewhere else.

The Freep article quoted elsewhere says: Though there are no scheduled/necessary surgeries, there is concern about McGuffie, who suffered another concussion against Ohio State. Rodriguez said multiple concussions for McGuffie would result in a further medical evaluation. http://www.freep.com/article/20081124/BLOG14/81124036/1048/SPORTS The term used for his injury in the MSU game was a "slight concussion". I can't find a quick link in the amount of time I'm willing to devote to it, but I'm pretty sure that he suffered a concussion in the Toledo game from the hit he took on the long pass completion over the middle.

I don't think he got a concussion against Toledo. He went to the sideline because he got rocked, but I don't think he was concussed. It wasn't a helmet-to-helmet hit and I don't think his head hit the ground, although I could be wrong about that second part. I just assumed he got the wind knocked out of him.

I'm completely unable to find anything that says McGuffie got a concussion on that catch against Toledo. Additionally, he did play the following week against Penn State, and although he didn't get many snaps, the fact that he got any snaps at all doesn't support my notion that he was concussed the previous week. So, unless further evidence comes to light, I'm withdrawing my McGuffie Three Concussions Theory.

Unfortunately I know this from personal experience. Each concussion a person has exponentially increases the chance of having another one. The fact that he had three in a short time span is very concerning. It has nothing to do with toughness. You can get destroyed, get up and be fine. You can have someone barely graze your head and have a concussion. I played hockey since I was six and never missed a game or practice no matter how hurt I was, until I started having concussions. None of which by the way were related to hockey, just doing dumb stuff as a kid. But the last one I did have happened during a game in college and ended my playing career. I hope Sam has better luck then I do.

The Toledo game he got the wind knockedout of him. He wanted to go back in 2 plays later. MSU was prob his only real concussion. OSU game was prob just a slight minor concussion.

I actually saw McGuffie in person yesterday at the O'Hare Airport in Chicago. Didn't get a chance to talk to him, I assume he was headed back to Texas for the holiday. Anyway, I can tell you with certainty that He was maize and blue from head to toe, and his girlfriend(assumed), was also rockin A maize and blue "Michigan Cheerleader" shirt. So if that's any indication, I believe young Samuel will be back in 09. Put some weight on the kid, stroke the ego a bit, and he'll be fine.
