Keeping an eye on Hurricane Matthew

Submitted by Phil Brickma on

The latest NOAA update (11 a.m. ET) says Hurricane Matthew is churning north faster than previously predicted, with the bulk of the storm expected to sit off the New Jersey coast by Sunday morning.  My fairly uninformed guess would assume we should expect heavy winds and rain Saturday night ahead of the storm.

Wouldn't it make sense for player and fan safety for Rutgers to move the game to an earlier kick to get ahead of the storm as early as possible? Local forecasts haven't been adjusted yet, but if NOAA still expects it to hold hurricane-force winds on Sunday, it isn't something I would screw around with.

I think we will be fine come game time. Luckily our RV has a nice awning to take refuge under! If you guys think the game time will be moved because of rain then you are mistaken. It's on ESPN2, they're not going to mess up the scheduled programming for rainy weather. Go Blue!

the weather in the South and up the coast Sucks!!!  We don't have any "hurricane"  or "tropical storm" garbage in  Michigan!!  Hear that, recruits?  Don't let them lie to you!!!

Looks like if it takes a more inland track, the storm center would not make it to NJ until some time on Sunday.  That seems to be the worst case scenario.  Image from weather.com

It looks like the bulk of the impacts in NJ would be on Sunday. Note that the typical error in track beyond 72 hours is around 200 miles so we don't know yet how it will effect that region of the country. I think the threat of weather during the game is low. That being said if New Jersey is looking at a hurricane hit on Sunday then Saturday will be evacuation day.

If they are in the process of evacuating the Jersey Shore they may not want to commit resources to providing security and traffic control for a football game. There is a chance we don't play this game.

And it won't be just Saturday. All of the schools, including universities, even South Carolina here in Columbia, are shutting down starting tomorrow. They are closing then routing all expressway traffic to westbound only. So both sides of the I-26 will be running westbound only starting tomorrow afternoon. And this is two to three days in advance.

This afternoon, my school in SC cancelled classes for the rest of the week and shut down. (students happy, teachers annoyed that our schedules are messed up.) We had to unplug everything and cover stuff with garbage bags. The hurricane may or may not actually hit us Friday night or Saturday.  This is Tuesday afternoon. I imagine that if there is any potential threat in NJ Saturday they will do something similar. State governments are very wary of hurricanes these days.

Personally, I would love a noon kickoff instead of 7:30pm.  I have half my bankroll on Michigan -27 and want the winnings in my account for the 3:30 games.

I live in Okeechobee, but I go through Pahokee sometimes when going hunting. Definitely a poorer area, but if the dike were to give, it would be a catastrophe for everyone around the lake. We are now under a hurricane warning, which is up from a watch earlier. It will all depend on the amount of rain, but they routinely discharge water from Lake Okeechobee to prevent a SLOSH.

I think we will see a repeat of last year's Maryland game - ticket prices crashing and an even greater surge of UM fans.

I'm looking at buying tickets and making the drive up from DC.

But I, too, will be watching the weather before I make a final decision.
