Just updated the Depth Chart By Class on this site

Submitted by pearlw on

I just updated the "Depth Chart By Class" on this site (http://mgoblog.com/content/michigan-depth-chart-class-0) to remove this past year's seniors and include recent attrition. I thought this was a good time to update as there will soon be movement on the recruiting front so an accurate count would be helpful.

Based on the update, there are 74 scholarships returning and 11 available for incomng class (currently 6 recruits). This a judgement call on the numbers and I specify my assumptions below:

1) Which walk-ons should now be considered scholarship players?: I counted former walk-ons G Glasgow, R Glasgow, and Kerridge each in my scholarship number total. This is a judgement call and I am happy to adjust if a consensus reached. My reasoning for including them is G Glasgow (2 yr starter, scholarship player in 2013 at least), R Glasgow (starter in 2014), Kerridge (#1 FB for 2 yrs, received scholarship in 2013 but unknown in 2014). If you want to count them as walk-ons, then there are only 71 returning scholarships. As an FYI, the previous version on this site only included G Glasgow of the three as a scholarship player.

2) Kyle Bosch: I included him as a junior in eligibility. It is possible that he gets a redshirt for last year (so then would be sophomore)  as he only played 1 down and medical redshirts can be given for non-physical ailments so his reason for absence may get him the year back.

3) Other redshirts: I assumed D Morgan and J Peppers both will get their medical redshirts.

4) Positions: I just left positions the same as was on the site before so I didnt make judgements as to whether players are in the correct safety or LB spot.

5) I removed the bold/italics for projected starter as its too early for that and it was such a judgement call that I found it unnecessary as of now.

Let me know if you spot any mistakes..Im pretty sure everything is correct but always a chance I made a mistake as I was rearranging the names to roll forward the year.

in order to get a medical redshirt in football:
1) The player cant play in more than 30% of team's schedule games..which for football is rounded up to 4 games. AND
2) The injury must occur prior to first competition of second half of season and player cant play for remainder of year.

Minnesota was the 4th game that Morris played so he wouldnt have been able to get one even if he didnt play later in the year.

Yep.  This year is fine except for DE depth.  But next year are some issues - unless we get rapid development.  Which hopefully becomes the new rule around here.  All the guys we are used to playing from the LB core will be gone save for Gedeon and he was just a bit player.  Ferns leaving hurts here - seemed like the guy that would be in a "rotation" in 2015 to take over a starting role in 2016.  Now its a lot more iffy who takes those other 2 spots.

S has been a constant worry - Montae Nicholson is extremely well thought of at MSU, still boggled Hoke and crew walked away from him.  So once Wilson leaves we are scratching our heads again at these other guys unless a lot of surge next year.  You have a pool of Clark Hill and Thomas - none of which really impressed this year.  Still thinking Watson might be a guy they bring over from CB to S in the long run.

DE depth will be an issue again in 2016 - the misses on Hand, McDowell hurt there.

DTs and CBs are going to be the strengths of the defense in 2016.  Have a lot of places we need to fill in around those 2 areas, and a lot of players need to begin to step up.  But the 2015 D except for that 1 safety spot and the backup DEs should have a lot of questions answered.

We need some studs showing up here on defense in the next 6 weeks as I think some of those guys are going to get a chance to play quite a bit in 2016.

Well probably the working assumption with the Harbaughing is Wheatley arrives and apparently he plays DE / TE - if we get Clark for TE seems like Wheatley might be pegged for DE.  But we need ends badly, I'd take 2 minimum in this class.  Then we need guys like Poggi and Marshall to be something.

With the sets Harbaugh likes to run on offense we'll need a fullback/H backnext year and he'll be the only one on the roster. I guess you could put Hill there too but need more than one and Shallman looks like the best option.

You're right.  But think about all those weeks where Brennen Beyer had a good week of practice.  Plus, he was a senior.

In all honesty, was hoping and still do that Pipkins wouldn't/won't be another Will Campbell, but it appears we can definitely be making that comparison.  And Taco Charlton playing behind Brennen Beyer was just simply disgraceful.

This may be worthy of its own thread, but curious to see what type of defense Harbaugh might bring to AA.  The 9ers are one of many teams running a 3-4 and Mattison does have some experience with it from his time in Baltimore.  If they bring it to AA, Pipkins becomes very important as one of the guys with the size up front to play a 3 man line against the competition UM faces in '15.

Problem is Charlton likely doesn't get on the field as much unless he can convert to OLB or he plays a rush DE on 2nd or 3rd and long.

Will Campbell actually made a contribution his senior year and got drafted into the NFL. It's too early to say that Pipkins will be as good as Will Campbell.

For me, Pipkins is easily the most depressing recruit we've had in the past ten years. He is at a position of dire need. He was the most highly rated high school prospect at that position. He had swag. He has a great name. He made that great play on Stefon Diggs in the Army AA game. Hype was massive. Great Hoke impersonation. He had three d-line coaches when he came in. Repeat--he had THREE DEFENSIVE LINE COACHES when he started at Michigan. There was absolutely no one blocking his way to a starting role.

I'm not disagreeing with this. But I'm curious, where has this idea come from. I've heard it in other places, but has Rosen come out and said that he would be interested in joining us and leaving UCLA pending the Harbaugh hire? I just haven't seen anything from his end. Hopefully I just missed something.

I fully expect both Glasgows to be on scholarship next year, Kerridge too, if he decides to return. At the same time, I expect their scholarships will be alloted to class of 2015 recruits to get this class up to 14 or 15. Once the attrition shakes out, their renewals can be made official. If there's room, I wonder if Bo Dever will be next in ine?

Yeah - I cant argue with your reasoning on that - seems logical. Thats why I tried to be very explicit about the assumptions I was making in getting to that 74 returning number. Like you point out, that doesnt mean the incoming class is limited to 11 right now. Basically the staff can act as if they have at least 14 and leverage those 3 as they arent guaranteed scholarships...knowing that they will still likely be able to give scholarships to those 3 as attrition occurs before the season.
