Juan Harris Decommits From Iowa

Submitted by Bambi on

Normally this probably wouldn't be thread worthy, but in his SMSB dicussion about linemen yesterday, Seth mentined Harris as a guy he would like to see Michigan get involved with, or at least for him not to end up in the B1G East. Despite Seth's positive take, his recruiting ranks have been dropping recently.

Harris is also noteworthy as he is a 368 lb NT, but a very noticeable 368, not like someone like Onwenu. Maybe his decommitment has smething to do with SMSB, but more than likely not. Here's a timeline of his recruitment taken from a reddit user:

In July, he named Wisconsin his leader. Shortly thereafter, he moved from Illinois to Wisconsin.

In September, Harris attempted to commit to Wisconsin, but was not accepted by the staff because he's 380 pounds

In November, Harris moved from Wisconsin to Iowa.

In December, Harris committed to Iowa. When asked about other potential offers, Harris said "I will appreciate their offer but what man will I be if I commit to Iowa then decommit, then commit to someone else?".

2 weeks later, Harris decommitted from Iowa.

2 more weeks later, Harris named Oregon, Alabama, and Ohio State his top 3 schools. None have offered.

2 more weeks later, Harris re-committed to Iowa.

In March, Michigan offered. Harris once again decommitted, now listing a top 4 of Michigan, Oregon, Alabama, and Ohio State. Only Michigan has offered.

He has since recommited and decommited to Iowa.

Yeah he looks like a Chris Clark / Jordan Elliott 2.0. I get that things happen sometimes, but if you go back on your word to the same school that many times, what good is your word to anyone else?

Losing Elliott and a potential left tackle to Stanford sucked...Harbaugh had an excellent class but it needed a couple of more big boys that could be redshirting this year.

Not sure about a guy who is not too sure of himself. I don't have any supporting data but I would think this is a major red flag just like a couple other guys we have seen make multiple commitments and decommitments only to end up doing absolutely nothing in CFB. I would be reluctant to take him.

till late, late Jan. to offer him.....ok maybe Feb 3rd we could get away with offering him and him not decommit.....OK wait, we should not offer him till the morning of him signing his LOI. hopefully with Rutgers, then have him sign by the afternoon. If he STILL decommits who the hell cares we should try to talk him into going back to Rutgers.

I think it's interesting how much people are saying they don't want him when the frontpage included this bit about him yesterday (emphasis mine):

First of all the guy was probably more like 320-330. Second, he is awesome. I was expecting, you know, a planetary tackle who just does Big McLargeHuge things. Juan could move, and has super long arms he was using to regularly swat away the pedestrian OL he went against. He easily had the most attention of any kid on the linemen field.

While I generally find the "I trust the coaches" line of reasoning to be an annoying means of shutting down reasonable discussion, if the coaching staff thinks an indecisive teenager is worth the risk to have a 330 lb DT who can "move," I'm in.

a) Camps for linemen are overrated. I think the top of the post even mentions that these things skew toward defensive linemen.

b) The concerns aren't so much about his athletic talents. I've read studies before talking about players who decommit/flip, and the results were not flattering. They tended not to pan out and/or to end up transferring. I don't know if committing and decommitting to the same school three times means he's a sure future washout, but...meh.

c) If the choice is to take a 2-star project or Juan Harris, then maybe you take the risk, IMO. Michigan does need defensive tackles. But with the way Harbaugh can recruit, I think/hope he can get some high-quality guys who make Harris somewhat irrelevant.
