Technically Harbaugh doesn’t need to sign an extension. He is under contract for one more season. However that wouldn’t make much sense because even if he kept everyone else on the staff he would need to hire a DC. No remotely qualified candidate is coming for possibly only one season. Michigan just seems terrible at this and the longer it goes on it seems like Harbaugh will leave and Warde will not be prepared to replace him.

Have no idea what JH might do stay/go/retire/ become a monk.  If he still has any competitive fire in him, I would think that he might want to stay at Michigan and prove all his critics wrong.  If he leaves, he leaves as basically a failure at his alma mater.  His legacy will only be as a good player and a mediocre coach here.  Sure he will get a ton of money to go to the NFL and maybe even win a Super Bowl one day in NY or LA & be declared a hero.  But he will always have this black mark on the family and UM escutcheon.  Or maybe he doesn't give a crap & just wants to move on to greener pastures.

No idea if Campbell  would work out in the manner we hope, but I can say a young, energetic coach with a chip on his shoulder mentality would probably be ideal for changing the current culture at UM.  Harbaugh was that energetic guy breathing fire and brimstone back when they hired him.

If Warde would just make a simple budgeting decision, JH would be in the shitcan NOW.  Campbell, if that's the guy, can be had for half of JH's eight millions of dollars.  That other four million can be allocated to paying all-star coordinators an extra million, or so.  Guys that can coach AND RECRUIT.  Guys with sterling track records.  There would still be plenty left to inflate other asst coaches and the recruiting operation.  Warde isn't getting his money's worth right now.  Back and forth about hypothetical outcomes of JH vs New Guy will not result in a good decision.  For $8 million, we can do better.

Ever wonder what JH's staff thinks of his salary vs. his performance?  I suspect a bit of resentment.
