He might move back to DT where he played in 2009.  I personally think he played better at DT that year than he did this year at DE.

01/22/2011 - 6:59pm Next year

I agree with you that there was a lot of criticism about RR getting 3 star prospects and at some point if we want to win the big ten we will need a lot more 4 and 5 star kids but this is different Hoke only had 3 weeks to recruit.  Just getting the 21 spots they have open filled will be a challenge in RR first year he had a month and a half to recruit

01/20/2011 - 9:39pm Mallett

First I do think he is a good coach just not worth being the offensive coordinator of a top five football team. John Navarre had a good career at Michigan but also had 3 WR who now start in the NFL and Doak Walker award winner at RB.  Henne in my opinion was his best coaching job but he did not fix Tebow mechanics and John Bentley (a 5 star recruit with 3 years to learn the offense) looked bad and how can you give him credit for Mallett who he coached for one season.  I would love him as a QB coach or an offensive coordinator for a MAC/Big East school but he should not be an offensive coordinator for a top five team.   Your argument for QBs in the NFL is like saying Greg Robinson is a great defensive coordinator because he coached 3 first round picks in his one year at Texas (Aaron Ross, Michael Huff, and Derrick Johnson)

01/20/2011 - 1:01pm What has Loeffler done

His claim to fame is working with Tom Brady at Michigan but you could argue that Tom under achieved at Michigan.  He did a good job with Chad Henne but also was QB coach for the lions during a bad year in which Drew Stanton did not get better, he worked with Tebow during his worst of his last 3 years, and John Brantley who is a pro style QB looked really bad this year.  I am not saying he is a bad coach but is he worthy of being an offensive coordinator at a power house program?

01/16/2011 - 10:39pm Way to early

It is way to early to make a call on next years Michigan team but I am not sure where he is getting the love for Iowa they lose 5 starter on offense including rick Stanzi, and six starters on Defense including future first round pick Adrian Clayborn and a great kicker in Ryan Donahue.  They have three really good players in Mike Daniels, Marvin Mcnutt, and Riley Reiff but after that they have a huge drop off in talent.

01/16/2011 - 12:03pm Kyle Brindza

Is there any chance that Brady Hoke focus on the state of Michigan gives them a chance at landing Kyle Brindza.

01/15/2011 - 10:35pm Troy Woolfolk

I really think Michigan's Defense has played its best football when Troy is at FS (see the 2009 OSU, Western Michigan, MSU when cousin was not running for 3rd and 20 first downs) I am not saying they were world class performances but compared to the last couple of years they were ok performances and when he is playing FS the ball does not get thrown over our heads.  I would think this is a move that should be considered.

01/15/2011 - 10:27pm Ferrara was a bad switch

John Ferrara was getting playing time on the d-line as a RS freshmen (that line included Terrence Taylor, and Will Johnson who were soild players) 3 yard later he is not in the 2 deep on the o line I wish he would have stayed on the d-line.

01/15/2011 - 10:19pm Really happy to see this post

I am really happy to see this post while I have been outspoken in my feeling about the direction of the program (and have lose a lot of points because of it).  I am really happy to see this post because Rich Rod does seem like a nice guy and I think he does deeply care about his players.  I wish him best of luck in the future.

01/15/2011 - 10:13pm This is not a big deal

There have been a lot of Glenville kids who have taken visits to Michigan (including Ted Ginn Jr) the problem is we have not gotten any of them.  I don't have a problem with trying to get Glenville kids but Hoke's time might be better used trying to get the kids from St. Ignatius and St Edwards.

01/15/2011 - 9:57pm How do they come up with these numbers

San diego states kicker was 54/56 on extra points and 17/22 on field goals with a 53 yard long.  There punter has a 45.4 yard average.  There kick off guy has a 67.4 yard average(kicks it to the 3 yard line) and a 44 yard net (opponents start on the 26 yard line).  It appear that there punt and kick return games are not good with a  6 and 19.3 yard average but does that cause you to be ranked 109?

01/01/2011 - 4:21pm FYI

After seeing how bad Michigan played today can people now call for Jim Harbaugh or Brady Hoke as coach without fear of having points taken away.

01/01/2011 - 4:18pm No

I will be sick of CC talk when we finally have a change and I do not have to watch the worst d in school history followed by and O that gets a ton of yards but can't score in the red zone and turns the ball over all the time.

12/04/2010 - 8:06pm Less prove RR

If you were going to hire Gus why not keep Rich they run the same style neither have defensive back grounds but RIch has won as a head coach at the college level so why would you hire an unproven coach after getting rid of a proven head coach with the same style

12/04/2010 - 5:57pm Courtney Avery

If you look at the history of True Freshment that have started at CB for us they have all gone on to have big careers

12/02/2010 - 10:56pm Look at his class

Jim is not just getting all of his recruits from California only 7 of his 21 commits are from California compared to the other in state schools this is low (12 of 16 for USC, 5 of 9 for UCLA, 4 of 10 for Cal, 17 of 19 for SDSU).

11/29/2010 - 12:34am harbaugh does not fix all the problems but

Harbaugh does not fix all the problems but how can you recuit if kids won't have Confidence that they coach will be there long term and it is not the losing that is bothering me as much as we are not even competitive.  Every team we played this year that will finished ranked we will have lose to by at least 10 points. My question to you would be what gives you confidence that we are going to make it to where we want to be given the last 3 years.

11/29/2010 - 12:26am Why did he start the year as the back up

If Gardner could not read defenses why did he start the year as the back up over Tate?  Like everyone else I have not seen enough of Mike Cox to say he will be great but he is a fit in Harbaugh system and RR has had a track record of not always playing the best players right away (Mcguffie over Minor until the Penn St game, Roundtree not playing until half way through last year, Obi over Demens for a year and a half, Mike Williams being on the field at all last year).  If we have injuries to the first three WR we have Odoms who has played a lot Jackson got so time this year.

11/29/2010 - 12:18am The O will have problems to start

I agree the O will have problems to start the season we also play our first 5 games at home next year against Eastern Mich, Western Mich, Minn, ND, SDS (most likely dealing with a coaching change).  I think even with the coaching change we will go 4-1 to start the season.  Like I posted earlier Michigan State had a 3 game improvement in the first year from a spread to a pro style O (I don't think we will have a 3 game improvement).

11/29/2010 - 12:11am I think Denard can play QB

I think Denard can play QB but not the way he does right now.  He can't run the ball 25 times a game other wise you will see the same replay every time we play a good team (Denard gains a lot of yards, gets hurt, comes back in and has a hard time throwing the football).  I am only saying that Michigan has less of a drop off between Denard and the back up QBs then there is between Denard and there running back therefore, if you want to have the best team it might include Denard at RB.

11/28/2010 - 11:59pm Because he made to many poor decisions

First they return 10 starters on offense, 9 on Defense and all there special team guys. Most players get better with experience.  Yes there offense is good and would be better with RR coming back but he keep Greg on to be a defensive coordinator of a defense (3-3-5) that he had never coached before, this from a guy who fired Erik Campbell one of the best WR coaches in the nation because he did not want to have to teach him the spread. Plus he kept Tony Gibson on as the DB coach when he had coached two pass defenses that finished in the hundreds while at WVU (104 in 2003, 109 in 2006).  To me this shows a disregard for the defense. Plus he had a coaching position to fill before this season on defense and fills with a grad assistant who was named in an ncaa investigation.  Harbaugh gets the LB coach from a really good NFL team and let him run his defense that is good coaching.

11/28/2010 - 11:38pm Michigan State

In 2006 Michigan State ran a spread which scored a ton of points and gave up even more ( heard that stroy before) while finishing 4-8 the very next year switching to a pro style offense they finished 7-5.  I don’t think we will  have a three game improvement but I think an 8-4 record is a real possibility with them beating Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, SDS (no Brady Hoke next year), Minnesota, Northwestern (Dan Persa will not be back), Purdue, Iowa (look at the roster they lose a ton of really good players), Illinois (Zook is still there head coach).

11/28/2010 - 2:02pm Buy out

Is DB waiting until after the bowl game to avoid paying the 4 million dollar buy out that would lower to 2.5 million after December.

11/27/2010 - 3:11pm No

Michigan just spent a ton of money to add extra suites to the stadium which did not sell out this year.  Do you think your going to have people spending tons of money next year to watch a team that did not beat a team this year that will finish in the top 30.  On top of getting blown out by the top three teams in the conference.

11/27/2010 - 3:03pm Stanford

I will be watching the Stanford game tonight so I can see some real football it has been so long.

11/26/2010 - 12:33pm Big East Sucks

As bad as our D is we held Uconn to ten points.  There is no doubt that experence and coaching play a part in WVU having the 3-3-5 work for them but if they were in the big ten they would not be a top ten D.

11/24/2010 - 11:12pm What if next year is to late

I agree a lot of the problem with this program were out of RR control but if you wait until next year you might lose out on a chance to get a really special coach in Harbaugh.  If RR is not fired after the game then they need to come out and let everyone know that he will in fact be the coach next year and not give a BS we will evaluate at the end of the season other wise we will get killed in recruiting.

11/24/2010 - 7:11pm Make him turn you down

If Chris Petersen turns you down then that's fine but make him say no don't assume.  Minnesota could double his pay (Glen Mason was making 2 million) and he might consider Minnesota if he wins all of his games this year and does not even play in a BCS game (6 conference champs, TCU (higher in BCS), OSU (draws big crowds), Stanford (keep rose bowl pac ten big ten), second SEC team (draws big crowds).  Alabama did not say Nick Saban won't leave a good NFL job for a middle of the pack team in the best conference coming off probation and that has worked out well for them.

11/24/2010 - 1:51pm Big splash

While I do think that Brady Hoke is a really good Coach I thought Minnesota was looking to make a splash with a big name head coach.  I don't think the casual fan would even know who Brady Hoke is.  If your Minnesota I would think your doing everything  you can to pull Chris Peterson from Boise State he is a good coach and it makes a big splash.

11/24/2010 - 8:57am Blocking

If you can't block Rich Rod will take you out of the game (it's what happen to Fitz in the Purdue game) I hope he get some carries before he misses a block.

11/23/2010 - 5:43pm Facts

Why does everyone keep talking about how Lloyd left Rich Rod with nothing?  Lloyd left Rich Rod with a D that ranked 24 in the nation and returned 8 starters.  The next year it was ranked 67 and has gotten worst since then.  The O had a future first round pick at QB two future first team all big ten linemen and a really good WR (Arrington, I do not include Manningham because he was gone no mater who the coach was) and two highly recruited RB (Minor and Brown).  It is not Lloyds fault that Rich Rod could not convince  a lot of the guys to stay and recruiting under Rich Rod has dropped, according to rivals Michigan had 5 four start recruits enroll in 2010 (I do not include Dorsey since he did not enroll) and we only have 3 so far this year.  Lloyd had 7 in 2007 and 11 in 2006 (his last two full classes).  When do we stop blaming Lloyd for everything and start appreciating everything he did for this program.

11/22/2010 - 10:54pm Losing 6 in a row is not the problem

The problem is that most people (even die hard fans) do not think we have a chance in this game and that takes away from the interest in this game.

11/22/2010 - 10:44pm I would love to blow out my rival

Your mad at Harbaugh because he beat a rival that runs up the score on everyone.  The only thing you should be mad at him for is that he could not go for 3.

11/21/2010 - 11:18pm Jordan Morgan

I have not seen any of the games but in looking at the stats how come Jordan Morgan has only played about 20 min a game in just looking at the number I would think he should be getting 30 min a game.

11/21/2010 - 2:28pm Lets look at the facts

Yes Jim did say some negative things about Michigan to boost his program but to be fair there are no general studies majors on Stanfords football team (it seems to be the major of most of our players) and I have never heard of a Stanford playing fighting to get an 18 on his ACT so he could get into school (both schools are similar in there admission standards).  Does Michigan do anything different than most schools no but if Stanford is going above what most programs do then is it really that big of a deal that he is promoting his program.

10/30/2010 - 9:57pm Already there

We are already Nebraska under Bill Callahan I am still worried that we might lose Jim Harbaugh to the NFL and a truck load of cash.

10/11/2010 - 8:52pm We are on the same page

I agree that some parts of the football program were not as great as they could have been in his last couple of years it just drives me crazy the way he was talked about and treated towards the end of his time at Michigan given how much he did for the program (national champs, big ten titles, over 70% grad rate, limited players with legal issues).  From your post I think you agree with this as well. but it really makes me mad when people talk about the programs drop being the result of Lloyd Carr.

10/11/2010 - 8:40pm Point Guard

Did Manny get any time at point guard I have always felt his best chance in the NBA would be as a point guard.  He was always good about passing the ball and given his lack of size I though he would have a hard time guarding twos.  Either way I wise him the best.

10/10/2010 - 2:14pm Molk

Would David Molk get one from last year.  he only played in the first 3 games and then part of the Penn St. game that would be less than 30 percent.

10/10/2010 - 1:29pm The Ron English era was good

In 2007 we ranked 8th in pass defense

http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/natlRank.jsp?year=2007&div=4&rpt=IA_teampassdef&site=org

10/10/2010 - 1:21pm Binn

Iowa's DE Binn is only about 250 and he had 7 sacks last year (SO year).  Greg Robinson is the one who said that hey thought Roh could be great yes he is young but he just disappears from games on a regular basis (although I thought he had a soild game this week).

10/10/2010 - 1:14pm Rivals recuiting rankings

2007 - 12

2006 - 13

2005 - 6

2004 - 5

Where do you get the ideal that Lloyd Carr stopped recuiting.

10/10/2010 - 1:09pm Stop blaming Lloyd

Lloyd Carr was 122-40 he had 10 9 plus win seasons in 13 years.  He his a hall of fame coach please people get off his back.

10/10/2010 - 1:03pm This is coaching too

Roh is at his best rushing the QB but atleast half of his time on the field is spent as a stand up LB not rushing the QB but dropping into coverage.

10/10/2010 - 1:00pm Poor coaching

First off the talent question just does not do much for me.  Do we have elite talent no but we have better talent than Florida Atlantic which did a better job against Kirk Cousins than we did.  Yes I know Cam Gordon was WR last year and is a first year starter, Kovacs is a walk-on, Floyd does not have great speed, James Rogers same as Cam Gordon but with the exception of Kovacs these are 3 and 4 star recruits with scholarship offers from multiple BCS conference teams.  Jonas had a UCLA offer is a 5th year senior with 3 years of playing experience,  Obi was the starting MLB for a team that beat Tebow and Florida as a red shirt Freshmen did he forget how to play three years later.  This to me is bad coaching and not just Greg Robinson the whole staff Defensive staff (minus Bruce Tall).  A coach can’t make you run faster but he is suppose to teach you assignments and gap responsibilities.  Remember Scott Shafer and how everyone blamed that first year defense on him, well that has been the best D in the last three years and he now has the 15th rank defense at SYRACUSE I know they have had an easier schedule but I don’t believe they have more talent.  I like coach Rod I really think if they even make this defense respectable they will play in a BCS game next year but as a head coach he need to take a more active role even if that mean letting coach Magee do the whole Offense and having coach Rod spend all or most of Practice and the game focused on Defense.  This responsibility should not fall on Tony Gibson who is there worse defensive coach.

08/24/2010 - 9:56pm I hope he gets his life together

I really hope he gets his life together and I really believe the first step is to give up on football he has not played in years and I highly doubt he is in football size.  He needs to take advantage of the fact he is still being allowed to take classes at OSU get his degree and hope that an alum will get him a good job inspite of his criminal record I hated him as a player but in the end I hope he turns things around (Same goes for boubacar whenever he starts taking the steps himself to turn things around)

08/24/2010 - 9:46pm What is his number going to be

What is his new number going to be Zac Johnson is playing D and already has number 19

08/24/2010 - 9:41pm I agree

I agree with you and lets not forget that last year Grady showed well in camp but had problems catching and holding on to the ball in games if he is playing DB those are no longer issues and we know he can run.  What do you have to lose by making this move

08/17/2010 - 11:43pm Let think

Well we have missed a bowl game two years in a row, after watching the worst secondary I have ever seen in Michigan history last year we now enter this year without a proven cover and the best DB might be a guy who played WR last year (Cam Gordon)  I hate to be negative but this is the one guy we could not lose if we do not average over 30 a game forget 8 wins because this is going to be a BAD secondary.  God might not hate use be he is putting us through quite a test.

08/06/2010 - 6:53pm This could be big

Randy Estall has had problems with fast QB and with it looking more like Denard will be the starting QB.  everyone knows the DE has a huge job in the read zone and Lloyd was one of those fast FL kids.  If Ucon loses speed at that position I think it gives us a big advantage.
