Bracket matrix update

Submitted by ish on

the bracket matrix was updated today.  55 of the 69 brackets have been updated post-OSU victory.  michigan is a 3 seed overall, the last of the 3 seeds.  it has an average of seed of 3.4.  however, the average is largely dragged down by the 14 brackets that have not updated post-OSU.  consider, in the post-OSU 55 brackets:

  • 4 have michigan as a 5 seed
  • 3 have michigan as a 4 seed
  • 48 have michigan as a 3 seed

in the pre-OSU brackets:

  • 11 have michigan as a 5 seed
  • 1 has michigan as a 4 seed
  • 2 have michigan as a 3 seed

also, georgetown, the best of the 3 seeds has an average seed of 3.0.  in contrast, wisconsin, the best 4 seed has an average seed of 4.2.  indiana, the worst 4 seed, has an average seed of 4.5.

if we win at n'western tonight, we're probably assured of no worse than a 4 seed.  n'western is in 50 of the 55 recently updated brackets and averages about a 12 seed.  they're also 40 in the RPI, which means at a win would be another top 50 RPI win without the risk of the win pushing n'western from the top 50, as our win against illinois did.

also, root for purdue.  their RPI is 51 so a hot streak from them gets us another top 50 victory.

Should be a fun March for the Wolverines. Based on a quick wikipedia search, it looks like the last time Michigan got a 3 seed was in '98 (forfeited, again according to wikipedia) and then '94. I was a little young to remember either of those, so this is the best Michigan basketball season I have been able to follow. Can't wait to see what they can do in the big dance.

Not sure how reliable wikipedia is on this kind of info, but I'm lazy enough to use it.

1998 was a good season.  We beat Duke on the same day that Charles Woodson was awarded the Heisman Trophy, and we won the Big Ten Tournament.  Unfortunately, we got eliminated in the second round of the NCAAs by a mediocre UCLA team.  And as you noted, the season was later forfeited anyway.

1994 was weird.  We had a great regular season--up until the end, when we blew games against Purdue and then Northwestern that would have given us the league title (this was before there was a Big Ten Tournament).  We had a great run in the NCAAs, losing a close game in the Elite Eight to eventual champion Arkansas.

Michigan was also a #3 seed in 1989.

Assuming we beat Purdue it would be two Top 50 victories of they can sneak into the Top 50. They could beat PSU and Nebraska which would put them at .500 in the Big Ten. Maybe they upset us or Indiana though both those games are away.
