Beating Team Canada all day long POSBANG

Submitted by KansasBlue on

As if the women's hockey victory wasn't enough, team USA men just took down Canada in curling (who have been olympic champions the last three games in a row) to go to the gold medal match for the first time EVER!

Me watching the last stone going down the ice:

What an amazing morning!

I can't believe I actually watched that whole game. Having heart attacks at 2am isn't fun but so worth it!!

The NHL oxygen was historically provided by Canadian hockey players (and a few USA youngsters)....too bad they forgot their Roots.

Amazing legacy and bold win for the USA Women's Team!!!!!!!

I actually attended the USA vs. Russia win 38 years ago today.

It began snowing just as you left the smallish Olympic Center and the screaming throng had to weave between protesters chanting and waving placards against Russian troops in Afghanistan.....

Most people do not remember there was still one more game and we had to beat Finland who led 2-1 going into the third period.  The noise and nationwide mania took over the building and it seems all 8,500 fans stood and screamed the whole last period as USA won 4-2 and bedlam broke out again and poured into the streets as Lake Placid's very few downtown bars were attacked by a tsunami of euphoric fans who were met by wall-to-wall screaming USA celebrants who had wild and almost frozen looks of astonishment on their faces.

Those last few days and games are still frozen in time with me and I actually had an extra ticket for the Russia game that went unused....my brother and a good friend of mine missed flights to get to Lake Placid (it wasn't easy)......

I gave away the ticket for the Finland game and if was today (the Finland game was two day AFTER the "Miracle on Ice" game) I could have probably traded the ticket for a car....

I sat at the bar nearly across the street from the Arena later that night (Bar Grasshopper?--was anyone else there that can remember?) and ended up sitting on a barstool right next to Jorma Valtonen who ended up telling me his name after about 30 minutes.  He was the goalie for Finland and was with 3-4 other players who kepy leaning into us to order more and more and more drinks.  I bought Jorma a drink but he was very bitter and terse.  So were the players he was with. (it was too loud to talk to anyone outside of a one foot range). The Finnish players were not at all pleasant or even congratulatory and drifted off in the mob as the roars to the TV news coverage began again and again

...  I thought of those moments last night as I watched the Canadian player jerk her Silver Medal off a millisecond after it was placed over her head.....Years of hard work and dedication gone in a poof!

But then, as in now....we celebrate with and for those that kept the flame burning and overturned years of frustration and mountains of steep odds to achieve their dreams...

Congratulations Ladies.....you just produced riveting memories for many lifetimes!!!

Sorry this post was so long.

It's been a good past few days for MGoBlog and USA Women's Hockey fans!!!

So much pressure on the U.S. team and they came through.  They really carried play for the third period and overtime.  Great D on the 2-on-1 which led to the tying goal.  Responded when they had to during the shoot out.  All the best to the ladies in red, white, and blue!

I watched the first, and enough of the 2nd to see Canada go up 2-1.  At that point, Canada was outskating and outworking the US, and just looked like the better team.  It reminded me of the US men flailing around against the OAR.  That's when I turned it off and went to sleep for work today.  I forget to recrod the damn thing!  Will have to search out a stream to watch the rest of it tonight, when I get home.

Outstanding news to wake up to!!!

Completely dragging ass this morning. Couldn't go sleep until 3:30 after that game last night, Medal Ceremony and post-game coverage. Just a great, great game. They deserved to win after putting it all out there in the last 30 of that game. Incredibly proud of how they fought and battled early on and finally got into their groove and took the game to the Canadians, putting them on the ropes.

So many great plays, so many moments that won that game! Well worth staying up all night for!

The women from both teams skated and fought their hearts out.

What an incredible rivalry - from the unbelieveable (and heartbreaking) finish in Sochi, to the heart-stopping finish in the pre-medal round, to that nail-biter last night. Two teams that could not be more evenly matched.

USA women have been the superior team in World Cup and overall rankings, but the Canadians have had a mental edge in the Olympics. Took every ounce of skill, mental strength and heart for our ladies to come back and pull it out.

Sometimes the olympics are magical. Congratulations to both teams, and espeically to our new gold medalists!

From the Toronto Star: ““It’s a really f---ing hard game at this level,” said Kennedy, Koe’s third. “We’re playing guys that are playing really well. You’re not going to win every game. That’s just the way it is.” Kennedy added, classily: “Sorry about the F-bomb.” At least we’re still world-class at apologizing.” https://www.thestar.com/sports/olympics/2018/02/22/canada-fails-reach-o…
