#9 Field Hockey upsets #2 Maryland in must-win Top-10 showdown

Maryland since joining the B1G in 2014 has been quite the pain in our ass in field hockey.

They won every B1G championship from 2014-2016 before being unseated by Michigan in 2017 when the Wolverines scored in 2OT with less than 2 seconds left in the game. That was only Michigan's second win over Maryland in the history of the rivalry. It knocked the Terrapins out of B1G title contention and Michigan went undefeated in B1G play. However, Maryland eliminated Michigan in the 2017 NCAA Final Four with a blowout win.

The first win by Michigan over Maryland was the 2001 NCAA National Championship Game. These games always have major implications on your season.

With a controversial 1-0 shootout loss to #7 Northwestern earlier in the season, this was an absolute must-win game if Michigan wants to 3-peat as B1G Champions.

#2 Maryland came into this game with a 13-1 record, their only loss early in the season to current #4 Duke 1-0.

This game was a defensive battle. Shots were 0-0 through the first quarter and the Terrapins outshot Michigan 4-3 in the second quarter but it was an amazing effort by Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort with about 1 minute left before halftime that put Michigan up 1-0.

That was all the Wolverines needed. Michigan held despite being outshot 10-5 including a 4-0 shot advantage by Maryland in the 4th quarter. Michigan goalkeeper Anna Spieker made 3 saves in the second half for the Maize & Blue.

#9 Michigan upsets #2 Maryland 1-0, beating the rival Terrapins for just the 3rd time in the series history between these two B1G powers.

Massive win that creates a first place tie in the B1G standings. Maryland won't lose another game in B1G play unless they really crap the bed. Winning this game tonight was our last hope of keeping the streak of B1G Championships alive and we got it done.

This was also the 300th win in the legendary coaching career of Marcia Pankratz. She's 300-130 at Michigan all-time (1996-2004, 2009-present). 1 National Championship, 4 Final Fours, 10 B1G Championships, 6 B1G Tournament Championships and 15 NCAA Tournament appearances.

Not only are all of those accomplishments Marcia Pankratz's but those are also all of the program's. Every championship and significant accomplishment Michigan Field Hockey has was made possible by Coach Pankratz.

Michigan will stay at Ocker Field and face Penn State on Sunday at Noon.

WD - I could not care less about FH (or any women’s sport), but you do such a nice job of detailing the results that it compelled me to read the entire article. You should consider sports writer as a profession. (It’s clearly already a hobby!)

Looking forward to your recap of a great BIG Meeechigan win tonight!

I just got home and could watch the highlights. That's some impressive stickhandling by Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort. If it were football, it'd be on Sports Center.
