#9 Michigan Field Hockey survived a close one against Appalachian State on Saturday, winning 1-0 in a game that was going on during the Michigan-Iowa Football game. Curious scheduling decision but thank goodness that was a win.

To put it mildly, Michigan got hosed in their most recent B1G game prior to Sunday: last Sunday at #7 Northwestern. It was a game that was scoreless through 2OT and went to a shootout. A very controversial overturned Michigan goal in the shootout gave Northwestern a 1-0 win against the #9 Wolverines.

Fast forward to Sunday, October 6.

#9 Michigan took on #24 Michigan State at home in front over 1,000 at Ocker Field in the annual rivalry clash.

This game was an absolute obliteration. Michigan had no time for MSU.

Michigan led 1-0 after the 1st quarter on a goal by The Team's leading scorer, Fay Keijer. It was a quarter where MSU had a weird shot on goal that was a flung ball that could've bounced any way. Remember that shot.

The Wolverines scored 3 goals in a 10 minute span in the 2nd quarter: Sofia Southam, Meg Dowthwaite and then Sofia Southam again on a SICK shot that was SCTop10 worthy with just 35 seconds left before halftime. Michigan led 4-0 at the break and led in shots 15-1 and 4-0 on corners.

Just 34 seconds into the second half, Fay Keijer struck again to make it 5-0 Michigan. Emma Tamer (daughter of former Michigan Hockey player Chris Tamer) got her second career goal seven minutes later and then it was English freshman Nina Apoola getting her first career goal to put Michigan up 7-0 after 3 quarters. Shots 24-1 and corners 9-0.

The Argentinian Sofia Southam got her hat trick, scoring with 21 seconds left in the game. It was Southam's 2nd goal off a penalty corner.

Michigan demolishes MSU, 8-0.

The largest margin of victory in the 74 game history of this rivalry by either side. A rivalry that Michigan has dominated, leading the all-time series 43-25-6, having won 25 of the last 30 as well as each of the last 6 meetings.

The most impressive stat of this game isn't even the final score. Michigan led MSU in shots 35-1(!!!!!!!!!) and blanked them in corner opportunities 13-0. MSU couldn't breathe in this one. Couldn't even get possession long enough to get sweeps off. Michigan completely overwhelmed them and the stats paint a perfect picture of this game if you weren't able to catch it on BTN.

Keep in mind that MSU came into this game ranked #24 and only lost to B1G Champion Michigan 1-0 in 2018 as an unranked team.

Michigan is now 8-3 (2-1 B1G) and will look to extend another long win streak against another rival: Ohio State on the road on Friday at 4pm.

This was a beating of epic proportions. I've watched some FH and have never seen this kind of disparity among teams in allegedly the same division.

think of a 16u team playing a 12u team.
