247 releases final Top 247

Submitted by ish on

247's final Top 247 is not the most kind ranking system applied to M's class.  David Dawson is our highest rated commit on their site, coming in at 65 overall.  The rest of our class breaks down as follows:

  • 80 - Dymonte Thomas
  • 81 - Shane Morris
  • 97 - Patrick Kugler
  • 103 - Kyle Bosch
  • 108 - Taco Charlton
  • 120 - Henry Poggi
  • 129 - LTT
  • 137 - Chris Fox
  • 190 - Maurice Hurst
  • 194 - Mike McCray
  • 199 - Ben Gedeon
  • 218 - DeVeon Smith

Derrick Green checks in at 84 overall.

247 lists Michigan's class 6 overall.  The question for the recruitniks/talent evaluators: is M's class lacking top end talent/supreme playmakers or are 247's rankings unduly harsh to our commits?  Obviously this isn't bad - 6 overall is an incredible class.  I'm just surprised by some of the rankings here.

Can anyone elaborate on why it states on 247's website that Poggi is visiting Alabama on the 18th of January? I thought this rumor was debunked...

Because he is going to Alabama on the 18th.  What has been debunked is the nature of the trip.  He is going to visit his friend and former HS teammate Cyrus Jones who plays for Alabama.  He is going with his dad and other Gilman football players.

There's always the elite talent. Guys who are almost locks to be top players. That's your top 10-15 guys. Then there are guys who are likely going to be right there as elite level players as well. That's 15-30.

From 30-100, I think these players are a lot closer than people realize. There are going to be some hits and some misses. But I'm don't think if you're #80, you're that much further from "elite" than #40 is.

So Michigan is going to find top level talent due to the NUMBER of players they have in that #75-250 range. They're also going to have some busts in this class that make you wonder a little bit.

In the end, I'd be willing to bet Michigan will have a similar number of elite players as say USC who has more guys at the top end, but not as many players overall. We'll just have more busts than they will. That is the only downside, because we'll have more guys who aren't playing and those are scholarships we could be using on top end talent. It could affect depth.

They're on par with ESPN (maybe a little lower) in terms of credibility......Green at 84?!  Really?!  He's the #1 RB at Scout and Rivals..........

Glad for Tremendous that he gets to break into the biz with them, but other than that, it's a waste of a recruiting site....

Told everybody last year that the Michigan Committs would get bumped down in the rankings because they committed to Michigan while the kids who committed to the IT schools like Alabama, USC, LSU and ESPN kids who committed to OSU got a boost in their rankings

We'll end up in the top 6, probably on every site. Given we lost 5 games this year and our main rival went undefeated I think the coaching staff did an amazing job recruiting this cycle.

Recruiting should be taken with a grain of salt, and you must realize it is just an evaluation of their current talent and potential....some recruits dont live up to there stars and some come out of no where.   J.J. Watt, for example, was only a two star and ranked 112th DE and look at him now.  Only time will tell how good these players turn out to be....

Anyone know when the final rivals rankings will come out?  They are the last major site who's rankings haven't been released, so I'm just curious.

The top classes are very similar and largely reflect team-specific needs. The better question is "did we miss on any positions or where do we need key recruiting wins in the 2014 class?" WR and FS still need playmakers (Treadwell and LM3 misses). Dynamic RB if we miss Green. Top CB is possibly a void. Another QB. Otherwise, we just need another deep class like this year.
