I learned some things yesterday... Michigan St (and Indy)

Submitted by Lordfoul on

There will be no belittling of the Spartans in this post.  No silly twists of their name or bringing up academics.  Yesterday Michigan St handed us a beating that they should be proud of.  It wasn't handed to them by the refs or by luck.  They were simply well coached and their game plan was well executed.  The Spartans didn't make mistakes and were solid in all phases of the game, and that is why they won.

Michigan was, in most part, what we have been seeing so far this season.  That wasn't their worst performance so far (I would still give the UMass game the edge there), and it was far from the best they can play, but nothing really stood out to me as unexpected. Well, perhaps the lack of running room for Denard Robinson could be described as surprising.  State had a great game plan for stopping (or slowing at least) our offense, and more importantly they had the personnel to execute it.

This is scary if you, as a fan, had pinned your hopes on what the numbers have been telling us.  The problem with much of the statistical analysis you see is that it shows everything in a linear fashion.  X team's offense meets Y team's defense at this point on the chart and there you have your expected outcome.  College football has too many teams with to large a range of player talent for anything linear to come out of it. Extrapolating the results of this season based on our first 5 opponents is asking for disappointment.

Michigan St's defense is an order of magnitude better than any Michigan has faced this year.  They have DBs that can run with our receivers and a front seven that can stand up to our OLine.  Their coaches also made great decisions for stopping slowing Denard Robinson by keeping the ball out of his hands past the line of scrimmage.  Michigan ran quite a bit of read option yesterday, and I don't recall a single read leading to Denard Robinson keeping the ball.  That is good execution of a solid game plan: Make the other Michigan backs hurt you.  Shaw, Smith, and Co. didn't do horribly at all, but the lack of Denard Robinson in space was obvious.  When Michigan ran the lead QB draw Michigan St showed that they had practiced well for defending it.

The rest of the game was pretty much what we have seen so far, but that doesn't mean I didn't learn anything from it (especially coupled with the Indiana game):

  1. Denard Robinson is not an Ice-in-his-veins gunslinger.  His throws have great zip and are largely accurate, especially so when the throw is shortish or his target is stationary.  Against Indiana (and the rest of the schedule so far) his receivers have been so open that a slightly inaccurate ball wasn't noticeable.  Against Michigan St the receivers were covered much better, and the picks in the end zone were the result.  Both balls were thrown to where the receiver was, not leading the receiver to where only he would have a chance at the ball.  With lesser coverage both are touchdowns.  We must remember that Denard Robinson is still a true soph and this game another set of lessons to learn from for him.
  2. Obi Ezeh is the biggest reason Michigan's defense sucks balls.  Watching him jump out of the hole on Michigan St's second long running TD felt like Deja Vu after all of the UFR videos of the last two years.  This is not going to change, not that anyone reading here expects it to.  Ezeh can make thumping tackles, but is rarely lined up squarely to do so.
  3. Kovacs is the opposite of Ezeh for this defense, never the reason they suck balls. When Kovacs took down the State tight end in space to sew up a 3-and-out in the 4th Qtr, all I could think was "He could have made that play from MLB."  I would love to see him get a shot at playing in the middle.  The dude is second on the team in tackles for a reason, he makes the right decisions and that keeps him in the play.
  4. Talbot (CB) seems to be a positive addition to the defense when he sees the field. Cullen Christian does not, at least at CB.  The touchdown on which CC was burned crispy displayed his lack of CB rated hips and recovery speed.  I would think that CC has a move to safety (or OLB?) in his future [edit: As many have pointed out in the comments, this is probably premature.  With the other freshmen looking decent though, and CC not getting much PT, I still see this move happening eventually.]
  5. No amount of tweeking this defense is going to make it good, or even average. More time and experience will bring up the level of play for the younger players, and in that the defense will improve.  Several of the younger players are actually showing quite a bit of promise.  The Gordons, Jabreel Black, and Talbot and Avery at CB have all shown signs that they will be solid contributors with more experience.  With some good recruiting to give depth, I think Michigan's defense will rise from the ashes in 2011 and 2012.  Mike Martin (plz be OK) coming back next year would help immensely of course.

Looking Ahead:

Iowa is going to be tough, and probably another loss.  Their defense is top 5 with the personnel to mimic the game plan Michigan St was very effective with.  Their offense is also pretty good, coming in 33rd in total with fairly even passing and running ratings. Michigan can win this game in the same way it could have beaten State, with an offensive performance bordering on perfection.  Think yesterday with two TDs in place of end zone Ints and Roundtree hauling in that TD as well, then add another TD drive as well and I think Michigan beats Iowa.  This is not very likely.

The rest of the season I am still optimistic about.  Penn St shouldn't be able to torch us with their issues on offense, and I think we can score on anyone.  Illinois looks to be improving, but I can see our offense winning that one ala the Indiana game. Purdue is simply a must win, and assuming Michigan does not suffer a rash of injuries, I could see our young defensive players improving enough to make the Wisky game a toss-up late in the season.  OSU is always a throw stats out the window type game where emotion can win the day.

I realistically see this team winning 7-8 games, with a possibly 9th win in a hypothetical bowl match-up.  Despite how I view the rest of the season's games individually, none of the wins is assured, and I wouldn't give any but Purdue more than a 75% chance of winning.  Winning the first 5 games will probably end up saving RR's job (and thank god for that), but we should all look at our pre-season expectations and realize that this team is right about where we thought, obviously better than last year but still climbing the mountain.

Of course Denard Robinson can change this outcome by himself.  If he can learn quickly from his mistakes in this game, and RR and Co. and come up with some killer counters for him in the run game, Denard Robinson can lead this team to a New Year's Day bowl. The man is special and a true "X-Factor" the likes of which we seldom get to see.  So enjoy the ride my fellow Wolverines.

"an order of magnitude better than any Michigan has faced this year:"  They were effective, but not that much better than Notre Dame for instance.  Michigan moved the ball up & down the field in the first half and the only thing preventing 21 points was a lack of execution on the offense, not incredible play from MSU defense.

Both of the interceptions in the endzone were because of good coverage by the Michigan St DBs requiring Denard Robinson's passes to be perfect.  Also the containment of Denard Robinson on the ground was more because of good defense than anything.

I think that the defensive performances from State indicate a defense that is much better than what Michigan has faced so far.  State forced Michigan's offense into more mistakes and poorer execution than usual.

On the second INT, they had pretty tight coverage, but on the first, Roundtree had the DB beaten.  Denard just threw it too late and behind him.  The ball came right to the DB.  MSU was fortunate not to give up a TD there.

They were also fortunate not to give up a TD on the next series, when Stonum was wide open in the endzone and Denard overshot him.

And for all the love people are giving their run defense, they fared considerably worse against our RBs than either UConn or ND did.  I think the UFR will show that we did ourselves in more than anything they did.

you miss in front of Roundtree and it's an incompletion.  Even so,  Roundtree had a step and room to work.  It should have been completed.

I agree that MSU had good coverage on the second INT, and DRob would have been better off pulling it down, going somewhere else,or throwing it in the stands.  But that was on 3rd down.  On second down, DRob short-hopped his throw to a wide open Odoms for a first down at the three.

But the DB was between Denard and the receiver. The only way he was going to get the ball to Roundtree would to be loft it over the DB. Which would have had him catch it all alone, but Denard hasn't shown a lot of touch, rifled in there right the the back in-between the two.

Alabama's D gave up more points than Michigan's yesterday. They're still a good defense while Michigan's is still not.

Michigan's defense was overmatched mentally (Ezeh and others), physically (all those guys being dragged by MSU running backs) and in terms of game experience (almost everybody). They played about as well as they can play and it wasn't nearly good enough. I don't think we'll have any kind of read on GERG's schemes until next year. At this point, zone coverage produces long drives and man coverage leads to crispy cornerbacks. I don't see that changing. I hate passive defense, but I think-for the moment-the best thing to rely on is the other teams' capacity to fuck up.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, if I were a confident linebacker, safety or cornerback, and I were recruited by Michigan, I'd see a team that desparately needs defensive talent to compete for championships, and I'd be all over it. I'd have a chance to actually see the field and win games.

I know it's been stated on here a million times but I personally have never been critical of this player because I didn't/don't think I'm equipped with intrical football knowledge that would warrant it. (After re-watching the game) Can someone please tell me who will play MLB next year and in the same sentence, if you would be so kind, tell me why he's not playing now???...Thanks

The coaches think that Ezeh's better. They're probably right. I feel for the guy, because he's playing hard, and lord knows, if the defense overall were better, his errors wouldn't be causing internet shit to rain down on him the way it does.

He wasn't the only one out of position, and he might not have been the worst offender. But he's a senior who runs himself out of position with some frequency, and sadly for him, when he ran himself out of the gap on the second long MSU touchdown, there was nobody there to pick him up, as there would be on a great defense.

Middle linebacker might not be better next year. The young guys will be, though.

What I saw was Denard playing very tight yesterday instead of his usual loose, unflappable self. After his first Int. it was all downhill with him forcing throws and the biggest, to me, was a missed cut I hadn't seen him take yet this season on a run. The drops hurt as well, even with TD's on the drive since they put more pressure on Denard, particularly for the future drives.

Personally, I don't think MSU's defense was any better than ND's, just had more games to prepare for Denard, and thus, were able to game plan a little better. Without his trying to force the plays like he did, and the plays he missed badly were better(none as a result of their D), he could have ended up with > 400 yards and a couple more TD's on the day. I don't know if it would have been enough to win the game, but could have contributed to different results from MSU's offense.

One thing MSU did which won the game more than anything for them was to play fairly mistake free football, which we did not.

I have confidence that Denard will play well against Iowa and give us a chance for a win in that game.

UM's defense is a lot like the WWE:  you know it is fake but don't realize how bad it is until you see it live.  The poor defense has no situational awareness and is the slowest defense I have ever witnessed at UM.  I'll start from the back and work my way forward.

First, Cam Gordon tries his butt off to make plays; however, Cam is a  year away from being a backup FS.  He is an offensive coordinators wet dream - he falls every time for PA and misdirection.

I am convinced that O. Ezeh has one assignment: engage any player on the field.  It doesn't matter if that player is wearing blue or white, on offense or defense, a lineman or a RB.  I don't think he could make the correct read if the QB told him the play.  But give him credit for trying and remaining positive.  Hell he played very little LB in high school.  Think about it:  Ezeh didn't start in high school at LB.

Kovas has the heart of a lion.  This kid was out on the field warming up two hours before the kickoff.  The only DB out that early.    He is a total ballhawk.  It is too bad he is not bigger and a little faster  to play the MLB position.  Oh yeah, his mom is not bad looking.

Roh not on the d-line is a waste.  I understand UM has very few playmakers but whoever made the decision to move him off the line should be fired.

The freshman CBs are not that bad.  Avery makes every frickin play on special teams and TT played decent when he was in the game.  CC got burned but D. Warren would have been burned on that route as well, cut CC some slack.  It also doesn't help when the safety is still playing the run.

Finally, time to have a little fun.  I know It's too late to make radical changes but hell I'll give it a shot.  This is crazy but here goes nothing:  replace C. Gordon with J.T. Floyd at FS.  I know this is dumb but the freshman CBs are not that bad and J. Rogers is playing pretty well and could hold the #1 WR.  I don't think UM faces any dominate receivers until OSU anyway.   C. Gordon is in over his head and provides no support on the long ball. Great kid just not ready for big time ball.  I have no idea what the hell I am talking about but rotate Demens and Fitz in with the starters just to see how they play in a game.   And please stick to a four man front with Roh attacking the QB on overy frickin play.

The End!

Question Dantonio: Coach, it's great to see you here, what will you be doing in the press box? Answer: Coaching, It's MICHIGAN WEEK!  I wouldn't miss this! WINNER TAKES IT ALL!

Question Rich Rod:  Coach, how did you prepare for the game?  Answer: Ah well, we started to put in the Game Plan in on Monday and got it all in on Thursday. Question: Did you prepare any differently for MSU this week?  Answer:  No it 's just another game....Oh but the intensity was up.

WooHoo ....Coach R you seem to say the thing every time at every Presser or Interview!

I also like the "I don't look at margin of defeat"  You think you could at least  act  UPSET! Geez, Saban was pissed off after a WIN!

HE DOSEN"T GET IT!  HE NEVER WILL!

I totally disagree. Sparty had virtually nothing to do with the 2 TOs that DRob threw in the end zone. The receivers were open, DRob had time, they were just bad throws.

If those are both TDs (as they should have been), it is a totally different game and IMO M wins the game.
