Matt & Seth Show 2022.02: Amoeba Timing Comment Count

Seth October 5th, 2022 at 11:37 AM

Since I'm freed of Offensive UFRs, Matt Demorest of HomeSure Lending and I decided to bring back the YouTube show where we look at a play or two and try to show you something you can spot next Saturday. He also has his son making picks and then we do a version of good & welfare called "talk me up/talk me down" at the end. We did a trial run last week and people seemed to like it so here ya go. If you're looking to buy or refi, he's the guy.

The two plays we discuss are here (the Harrell pressure) and here (the Morris sack).

There is no content after the jump. The video is the content.

(P.S. I prescheduled this post yesterday in case you were planning on reporting to a certain biblical deity that Seth's working today.)
(P.P.S. I call it the Seth & Matt Show. Oldest name goes first, right?)

I like this show. It's simple and clean. Straight to the point. Will you two be able to record from the same room/space anytime in the future?

Just an idea, Could we suggest a play we would like to learn more about after the game? If that had been the model, here are my votes from this week:

1. The fake kneel play. That must have been BFs big trick play that he saved for their super bowl, and it did get ~7 yards (iirc). So what about our response was so good and why was the play so bad? How could they have adjusted it to actually make it work?

2. Since Seth loves the big guys, and Matt is one, maybe you can spotlight a few clips of Mazi and how his doubles open up the edge (in different ways). Credit to Okie from his press conference and Seth's UFR today (chef's kiss) for the inspiration.

Requests: Doing one a week so yeah, go ahead and make requests after the game. We should choose a specific venue for that--for now I'll check this thread.

Same place: Maybe? The thing is it's a LOT easier to do this on a Monday after football if I don't have to leave my place. That's mostly a charting day.

I didn't note any specific play.  My stream was pretty hard to watch.  So these are just general topics that might need another look at an RPS adjustment or two.

1. 2nd half defensive shift.  We had far better results in the second half by

a. we brought much more pressure and

b. we hardened up the edge coverage.

I would like to see what were the adjustments.  Did we line up closer to the receivers and bust any screen setup with a hit? Apart from the Barrett and friends sack, and the Colson sack, it didn't seem like we were doing anything more than letting 4 men push 5 men until one of the 5 was depansted.  Bazelak held onto the ball far longer in the 2nd half, assumedly due to better coverage and coverage adjustments to take away his preferred read(s).  However, like in the Iowa game, there is a point in time (3rd quarter with a lead - passing downs) where we up-down-up-down-left-right-left-right-(select)-start Bazelak and he has no recourse.

2. Our run game.  It seemed like our bread and butter stalled out in the 2nd quarter and stopped being effective for the entire first half.  What did we do to get Corum, and others, free to take those 2-3 yards and make them into 5-6?  Clearly, the offensive line began to clear lanes and Corum+Edwards took better cuts on average, but was it play calling, motivating the line/backs, or something Indiana did?

I think my 9-year-old daughter was right about this game.  It wasn't as bad as I made it sound and it won't look as bad on replay.  Road game, big ten, Chaos team, etc.  A good (enough) win in the end.

Just one pedantic point - on the Sunday podcast and here, Ishtar was invoked - initially by Brian seemingly to imply a long, endless journey.

Ishtar wasn't a long movie, or about a long journey. It is noted for being terrible and way over budget. Maybe Brian was thinking of another movie? Lawrence of Arabia maybe?

Seth was right on Harrell.

His foot speed just does not allow him to be an elite pass rusher at his size. He plays such a sound smart game that he seems quicker than he is when he is reading plays and reacting.

Okie on the other hand. His progress is impressive and he could be a difference maker for the season.  The potential is awesome.
