Texas QB Bellomy to visit Michigan
Scout.com has a paywalled article regarding a dual threat QB from Texas coming to A2 for a visit.
Anyone have some insight?
EDIT: It's Russell Bellomy (thanks jblaze)
Here is the link (behind paywall):

I liked him as well. Nice throwing motion, not too much wasted motion. Runs well and looks pretty elusive.
Texas high school football is such a big deal, it amazes me everytime I see film.
January 24th, 2011 at 12:19 PM ^
Hard to say what level of competition he's playing against in the video, but he's a decisive runner with nice ability to make quick cuts in traffic and in the open field.
I like him. And his brain.
January 24th, 2011 at 12:26 PM ^
It is hard to tell the level of competition, but judging on the field alone, I would say his school takes football pretty serious.
January 24th, 2011 at 12:47 PM ^
Plays in Texas' 5A Div 1 (bigger schools) which is the highest level of competition in Texas HS. Russell lost to Trinity High School the past two years in the playoffs. Trinity has been top ten nationally last 5 years.
And yes - it is pretty serious.

to be a good athlete and has some speed. I liked the throws in traffic over the deep balls to wide open WR's. He also seems pretty good finding open WR's on the move.
I also think it's cool that one of the HS stadiums has a Walgreens at the stadium. That makes it so easy to pick up some candy or a shake weight at halftime.
January 24th, 2011 at 12:33 PM ^
for the shake weight reference.
January 24th, 2011 at 12:20 PM ^
Geez, let's get his receiver #10.
January 24th, 2011 at 12:44 PM ^
... wesley hawthorne, 3 star prospect. Has offers from arkansas-pinebluff and towson
January 24th, 2011 at 12:53 PM ^
I'm no scout, but he looked pretty damn good to this layman's eyes.
January 24th, 2011 at 12:25 PM ^
I wonder if he's ever taken a snap under center. Whatever, I'd be happy if we got him. Always love to covet thy neighbor's recruits.
January 24th, 2011 at 12:51 PM ^
not a ton but yes he has taken snaps under center.
January 24th, 2011 at 12:26 PM ^
Sounds pretty sweet to me. Sign him up.
January 24th, 2011 at 12:36 PM ^
... channeling your inner Tater.
January 24th, 2011 at 12:27 PM ^
I for one am pretty excited that Brady Hoke is going after a dual threat qb. I feel like having a qb that is mobile is such an added benefit. Its even being seen the next generation of great QB's: Rodgers, Big Ben, and Sanchez are all mobile guys.
January 24th, 2011 at 12:28 PM ^
I wonder if anyone from Michigan ever scours the six-man leagues in Texas? My son played in one and there are some "studs" that fly under the radar. You talk about spread football...nothing like it. I love it!
January 24th, 2011 at 12:32 PM ^
pretty impressive highlight film (sometimes these are misleading). I hope this kid turns blue - looks like her throws a nice ball and is mobile as well.
Also judging from his rivals profile, he is a genius - should have no trouble learning a complex playbook and understanding defensive coverages (assuming he is coachable)
January 24th, 2011 at 12:39 PM ^
... this ESPN article talks about how he started with an offer from purdue and FIU, and now he's one of the top QB's in the state.

hmmm... we'll see
Teammates and coaches are more important. Fair enough
January 24th, 2011 at 12:48 PM ^
I hate that Rivals divides the quarterback rankings between pro-style and dual-threat. At the end of the day they're quarterbacks and their job is going to be to throw the ball, unless they're going to play in a true option offense. Not all "dual-threat" quarterbacks are suited best for a spread.

I'm a Student Pastor here in Arlington and Russell is in my youth ministry. A fine kid with some good talent. He and I have bantered back and forth over the past year as he looked into MSU and Purdue (where he is currently committed.) He didn't look at Michigan because of the spread as he can throw the ball and felt like at Michigan it was all about the legs.
Believe it or not, he has not mentioned to me that he is interested in MIchigan but he wasn't at church yesterday either, so if this ie new he may be wanting to mention it in person.
I, of course biased, would love to see him at Michigan. He isn't gonna threaten Devin in the next year or two but he does have some skill. Our student ministry hosted a flag football tourney at Jerry's World last month and Martin High School represented well with several Div 1 athletes. Russell's team came in third of the 47 teams - actually beaten by the winning team (a bunch of Juniors/Sophomores from Arlington.)
EDIT: sorry for the long post.
January 24th, 2011 at 12:56 PM ^
have him stay with Craig Roh
January 24th, 2011 at 12:58 PM ^
Your post, I has interest in it.
January 24th, 2011 at 1:14 PM ^
When he gives me permission, I'll tell more.
January 24th, 2011 at 1:15 PM ^
Thanks for looking out for the Maize and Blue.
Let him know about Zingerman's, the weather in the Spring and Summer, that there is nothing better than a Fall Saturday with a home game and once you’re a Michigan man your always a Michigan man. By the way the academics are pretty good too. Those that stay will be Champions or Doctors or Lawyers.
I know West Lafayette and it's no Ann Arbor by a long shot.

Those that stay will be Champions or Doctors or Lawyers.
Or astronauts.
Or presidents.

That's very cool cjm. And it wasn't too long, I've written posts that long without even saying anything worth reading.
It sounds like he trusts and respects you. I think it's good of you not to be the guy who pushes UM just because you're a fan. However, if he talks to you about it (as it seems he has in the past), it's certainly not out of bounds to let him know how amazing Michigan is and how we're better than Purdue in every way except boringness (maybe not that exact wording). If you want to let him know many people who didn't know he existed yesterday are raving about him on the interwebs today, that would be cool too.
And of course, if you have any further information you'd like to share with the board or with me privately so I can share it with the board and take credit for it, you're more than welcome.

we have Russell Bellomy's Underachieving All Stars to look forward to in 2016?
January 24th, 2011 at 12:40 PM ^
looks like a solid passer and come good athleticism. who is that kid at :55 seconds? broke a few tackles and showed some good moves. And what do you think about our chances with Bellomy?
January 24th, 2011 at 12:49 PM ^
His highlights are pretty impressive. He reminds me of a Taylor Martinez with better throwing mechanics. I'll take him!
January 24th, 2011 at 12:55 PM ^
He reminds me of Peyton Manning, but with better accuracy.
January 24th, 2011 at 2:28 PM ^
I remember someone saying that about Denard a couple of years ago
January 24th, 2011 at 12:52 PM ^
Bellomy played in one of Texas' top divisions. He's had to face talent on a regular basis that guys outside of only a few other states are unlikely to face, fwiw.
January 24th, 2011 at 12:55 PM ^
That's fine and dandy, but why are we chasing him when there are much better qb's out there. I believe borges and hoke have a particular qb in mind to fit their system and they will not look anywhere else. This is going to hurt us, and i'm trying to keep my tounge straight, but they are acting a certain way about this qb thing.
What i liked about RR is he didn't care who were as long as you can do the job and he broke the mold in michigan when it came to that qb. if you know what i mean.
January 24th, 2011 at 1:01 PM ^
Most of them commited to schools long ago that they aren't going to decommit from now.

Curious, what do you mean by this. What kind of QB do you think they are looking for? Is this kid similar to the QB they had at SDSU. Also, this is the first QB they are looking at here.
January 24th, 2011 at 1:24 PM ^
Wait, what? How in hell are they supposed to "act?" Should they be "acting" like Rich Rodriguez? Jim Tressel? Nick Saban? Do you think that Hoke doesn't care if his QB "can do the job" or not?

If you follow the link from the posted video, you will find his interview from the elite 11...

January 24th, 2011 at 12:58 PM ^
I don't think anyone is supposed to know he is visiting - I think he was trying to keep it under wraps.
January 24th, 2011 at 1:05 PM ^
we won't tell anybody else.
January 24th, 2011 at 1:00 PM ^
Is he still a Purdue commit? According to some comments on the youtube highlight video he commited to Purdue.
January 24th, 2011 at 1:03 PM ^
To hell with Purdue.
January 24th, 2011 at 1:12 PM ^
You're going to piss off Danny Hope. I'm sure that will break your heart.
January 24th, 2011 at 1:13 PM ^
He is still a Purdue commit.
January 24th, 2011 at 2:49 PM ^
This is what Scout says but that's just for now.
January 24th, 2011 at 1:11 PM ^
I had come across the video before and can't remember where I saw it. I just remember thinking this kid is really good and would be nice to have him. It's crazy how things work out sometimes.
January 24th, 2011 at 1:13 PM ^
but here's an interesting interview of him about a year ago. Can't figure out how to embed - here's the link.

Bellomy is not even ranked among the top dual-threat qb's. If borges and hoke want to go after a ranked d-t qb, why don't they go for Jacoby Brissett out of FLORIDA who's in the top 5 as far as d-t qb's go to .http://rivals.yahoo.com/Michigan/football/recruiting/player-Jacoby-Brissett-84272;_ylt=AqKMGdDdWuOosjEWYLuDQOBpspB4

fun fact I learned from ESPN (we all know how reliable they are!) is that North Carolina is recruiting him to play basketball. Since he is only a 2 star shooting guard, i think this may be a way to get him to play football as well ala Julius Peppers
