OT: Transferring from CC to UofM

Submitted by Skiptoomylou22 on

hey guys, i kinda shit the bed my first year and half of highschool which kinda screwed my chances of getting into UM out of HS despite two years of 3.5+. despite acceptance into CMU, WMU, EMU, ASU, OU AND UNC (Ed: Defferred) , i choose to go to Oakland Community College instead to save money and stock up on credits to transfer. so my question is this, has anybody done this (transfer from cc-to UM) and if so, what would you reccommend i do to better my chances of acceptance into UofM. i got a 3.4 on a bunch of big credit Pre-Recs and the councelors here are kinda booboo. any tips are appreciated, thanks guys, GO BLUE!!

I'm in the process of trying to go from cc to UofM w/ a transfer. Looking at how the MACRO works, my cc which is washtenaw does not have Michigan in it's MACRO agreement to transfer credits. Can someone please help me out w/ how this works.

Depending on the course, credits from WCC do transfer to UM.  First look at the UM Community College Transfer Portal.  Then read about Transfer Credits.  Then check out the WCC-specific transfer guide, which lists all the courses for which you may receive credit (some are at the discretion of the dept, others are explicit).

EDIT: For the OP, here is the OCC transfer guide.  For other schools, the list is here.

My daughter is doing something similar at WCC here locally.  They have a counselor at Washtenaw specializing in transfers to U-M.  Maybe OCC has the same?  I'd look into it.  Also, I'd definitely find someone at the U-M admissions office to get advice from.  For example, Michigan may not extend credit for certain classes.  You need to be dang sure which classes they'll accept before taking them at OCC.  I'd also say if you can zero in on a specialty at U-M it will improve your chances.  Rather than just wanting to pursue Liberal Arts (nothing wrong with that by itself), U-M likes to see people with a specific career interest (like pediatric nursing or accounting). Then, see if you can talk to someone at U-M in that area.  Finally, work like hell to get even higher grades to improve your chances.  Good luck!

Biggest tip for me was communicating well to the person heading the acceptance comitteee if you know who that is.  With emails, a visit.  It will help a lot and if you have a good application (grades, out of school stuff, letters) you are in.

I'm in a similar situation as the OP.  I proverbially "shit the bed" in high school.  Went to the local community college where I have been stellar (not to brag).  I applied a couple weeks back for the LSA college but am just curious as to my chances of getting in are.

I did it. I didn't have the money and I was the first person in my family to attend a University. I went to Henry Ford CC and took 19 credit hours per term and four-pointed (all A's). I got an Associates degree in no time and applied to University of Michigan (Ann Arbor).  Sadly, many of the credits I took did not transfer so I ended up losing a year of credit.

The bottom line is that if you are going to a CC, you had better be doing really well in your classes because although some of them are fun and challenging, the general cailbur of student is not the same that will be in your classes at Uof M.

... 3.8+ GPA from good HS and decent board scores won't necessarily get you in.

But go for it, and have someone read over your essay.

And the "Lamborghini Livin" signature may turn out to be "Dustbuster Drivin."
