RR-Era Slogans/Signs

Submitted by Elise on

Just a point of discussion I was wondering about...

What does everybody think Hoke will/should do with the new slogans and signs that were put up during the Rich Rodriguez era?  Will "Hard Edge" stay?  What about "Hold the Rope?"  I think Barwis had another one put up, too, but I can't remember or find a reference to it.  Will Hoke keep them, or go his own way?

Thoughts?

I am guessing that with the entire "Michigan Man Mania" thing, all references to the RR era will be erased from history, sorta like it was done in the classic novel 1984.

I am actually all for it.  Any use of RR's slogans would almost seem like they were a mockery.  And a person who stood in the face of and responded to so much bullshit with so much class does not deserve to be mocked.

Let Hoke come up with his own witticisms and motivational ploys.  Since we are "stuck" with Hoke for at least the next five years, I would really prefer to see him become his own man with his own system and his own motivational sayings and tactics.  "Those who stay" is a classic part of Michigan lore and should remain so, but everything else should be scuttled and replaced with "Hoke-isms."

If Hoke is to be a success at Michigan, he won't do it by imitating Lloyd Carr.  If Brady Hoke becomes LCII, it will really suck.  Brady Hoke needs to become the best Brady Hoke he can be.  It may even involve ruflling a few old school feathers, but Brady Hoke needs to make his own mark on this program and contribute to the evolution of Michigan football.

If he can do that, we might all someday laugh at the fear and uncertainty many of us feel right now.    I don't know about anyone else here, but I really like to laugh.

Hoke has always been the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines.  The line from Big Yost is unbroken and will flow on, a great blue river, into all eternity.

The Michigan defense is dead.  Long live the Michigan defense.

...

Maybe RR will turn out to be some sort of "sacrificial lamb" to the history books.  He stepped into a perfect storm of attrition, declining brand-name recognition, and took M in a completely new direction: the concrete wall o' pain.

Every big cheese gets to redecorate. I'm sure that David Brandon re-did his office after Bill Martin left. Probably got rid of the nautical items for starters.

Yeah, I know that inspirational signs aren't exactly "decoration," but if signs had a meaningful impact on a team's performance, RR would still be in his office in Fort Schembechler.

All I know is we only talk about players that play for Michigan. Why? They are all in for this program. The men that walk through the doors of Schembechler Hall have strength and honour. They raise up the family values of the University of Michigan and hold the rope. This hard edge at Michigan is something not even Vince Lombardi could comprehend. Every rep counts, as does every sip of chocolate milk after a conditioning session. Building a team, especially a defense, can't just be a spur of the moment thing; it's built on being a bandit on the recruiting trail, using snake oil and wizard hats to become the very best. This is Michigan. Our helmets have wings, damnit.

"Those who stay" is more than just a slogan or a sign to me. It even reaches beyond the football program at this point. Its a statement on life itself and carries FAR more weight than any simple "Hard Edge" or whatever else.

That said I think Hoke should keep the ones he likes personally and feels can be decriptive of the team he wants to build.
