Barwis out? (per Chengelis)
January 12th, 2011 at 3:24 PM ^
If Barwis is indeed on a separate contract, what's preventing him from staying on as the S&C guru for the entire department? He doesn't only work with football players, and there's been a lot of positive praise from all kinds of athletes at the University about their work with him.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:25 PM ^
Yeah that is true.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:29 PM ^
That's Inaccurate. Barwis only worked with football. The remaining (Olympic) sports have their own staff that is from the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:39 PM ^
This is wrong. He's worked with the hockey team.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:42 PM ^
Jim Plocki is the hockey s & c coach
January 12th, 2011 at 3:44 PM ^
You're right. Barwis has only worked with the football team.
His assistants work with hockey, soccer, etc. His title is not specifically football's S&C coach, it's Director of S&C.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:48 PM ^
Go on mgoblue.com and look at football strength & conditioning and Olympic strength & conditioning. Barwis was the Director of football strength and conditioning and Mike Favre is the director of Olympic strength & conditioning.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:49 PM ^
which is what I just said; why is this continuing?
January 12th, 2011 at 3:54 PM ^
I want to add one more!
January 12th, 2011 at 5:06 PM ^
I disagree with you.
January 12th, 2011 at 6:36 PM ^
You are TOTALLY wrong! I disagree with myself and therefore contradict you!
January 12th, 2011 at 3:52 PM ^
don't think it matters, he'll follow rodriguez as soon as he gets around to signing with a school and putting a staff together again. probably next season when the coaching carousel comes back around.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:56 PM ^
Sorry but this is not happening.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:25 PM ^
As expected. There were reports that Hoke had a well respected strength guy on his staff.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:28 PM ^
would come to an end?
January 12th, 2011 at 3:30 PM ^
Hope not! and I kind of doubt it.
January 12th, 2011 at 9:59 PM ^
Probably not, given that Elliot is still on the team. (Brock was only working out with Barwis part of the year, anyway - he's a grad student at OSU.)
January 12th, 2011 at 3:30 PM ^
The basketball team should hire him to be there S&C guy
January 12th, 2011 at 4:33 PM ^
...raves about their S&C coach, Jon Sanderson. Many positive mentions in past installments of J-Bart's blog, for instance.

January 12th, 2011 at 3:30 PM ^
Ashamedly, one of the first thoughts in my head while watching Hoke speak this afternoon was whether he could be "Barwiscised" and whipped into a finely-tuned machine just like the other Barwis prodigies.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:32 PM ^
Whitlock raved about Hokes S&C guy for what its worth.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:34 PM ^
Yeah but that guy also raved about Hoke. Grain of salt anyone?
January 12th, 2011 at 3:56 PM ^
first off, whitlock is a racist and makes me sick. I've seen more racial issues in his articles than any other sports journalist aside from tony dungy's commentary. he's also a ball state grad so why wouldn't he be all over hokes jock. if hoke was black, whitlock would ask him out.
January 12th, 2011 at 4:05 PM ^
Are you serious?
Whitlock is a hack. He's not a serious thinker.
He mistakes being "controversial" with being thoughtful. But to call him a "racist" (him and… Tony Dungy?!) is incredible. It doesn't make you look very good.
January 12th, 2011 at 9:51 PM ^
call them like you see them. I won't back down from anyone who shows themself to be racist. whitlock and dungy are in that category and its not even close, but then i suppose you support jesse jackson and al sharpton too?
January 13th, 2011 at 11:47 AM ^
There's a word for people whose examples of "racists" consists exclusively black people who talk about racism.
(Hint: It starts with an "r")

"History's Greatest Monster."
This guy, eh?
January 12th, 2011 at 3:33 PM ^
I would really like Barwis to stay. His work with Brock Mealer was incredible and he's a great man that all of the players seem to have the utmost respect for.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:43 PM ^
Alas, wishful thinking. He is not a Michigan man. My heavens, he threw out all that old equipment from the LC era and brought in new stuff! Say good bye - he'll land in Pittsburg with McGee, etc. And expect more of the old LC crowd to show up looking for work.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:48 PM ^
Can we please drop the "michigan man" term, it's overused and usually used out of context. Please let it go.
January 12th, 2011 at 4:01 PM ^
It was only over-used when it was used as a weapon. You had better get used to hearing it now, because it will be used as a two-word resume when everyone in the Carr-tel who doesn't have a job applies for one.
To me, the best chance for this regime to succeed is if at least fifty percent of the coaches come from outside the IMCT. I'm guessing it's a close one, and the team soon has a "putting the band back together" feel.
January 12th, 2011 at 4:37 PM ^
the overeaction to any perceived negativity towards RR is ridiculous.
By everyone's pissing and moaning around here you'd think RR wasn't 0-6 against MSU and OSU.
You'd think he wasn't 15-22 in his 3 years here.
You'd think he didn't have the lowest winning percentage of any head coach in Michigan history.
You'd think he didn't have the 3 worst defenses in Michigan history.
You'd think he didn't drive a once-proud program into the ditch.
January 12th, 2011 at 9:54 PM ^
sure did, just like he lost to a non div 1 school and left the program in great shape, no, that wasn't him after all. not like the new guy even has a winning record as a coach.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:51 PM ^
January 12th, 2011 at 4:01 PM ^
Buddy Morris is a legend and is more respected than Barwis, hate to say it.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:44 PM ^
Plus eeeee Barwis.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:57 PM ^
He is a stud.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:45 PM ^
Wellman is coming definitely - once Barwised, now Wellmanated.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:48 PM ^
And while I'm sure Barwis is good, I'm sure the new guy will be as well - just as every other schools' S&C guy is..
January 12th, 2011 at 3:50 PM ^
but I think Barwis stays on at UM. Hoke's S&C guy will strictly be for football while Barwis works with all other sports directing the S&C for the entire UM sports family.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:58 PM ^
Unfortunately, I do not see that happening.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:53 PM ^
Sad to see him go, I like the guy and what he did with Brock Mealer was awesome. I think he was a real attraction for recruits and sounds like players really like him too. Barwis will land on his feet. Hopefully Hoke brings in a good strength guy.
January 12th, 2011 at 4:03 PM ^
He isn't gone yet. Plus, we don't know how Wellman will be placed within the current S&C program.
He could very well be gone tomorrow, but right now he's still here.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:54 PM ^
I'll miss Barwis.
Also, Aaron Wellman, the guy Hoke is bringing in, was the S&C guy at Michigan State from 2001-2003.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:55 PM ^
Who seems to rank Brady Hoke as his favorite person of all time, with God a close second, Wellman is the best strength and conditioning coach in the country.
January 12th, 2011 at 3:57 PM ^
No more ability to say our S&C guy can beat the crap out of your S&C guy.
January 12th, 2011 at 4:08 PM ^
Uh-oh, hope he doesn't release the dogs.
January 12th, 2011 at 4:11 PM ^
At least Barwis opened our eyes to the potential impact a S&C guru can have on recruiting. I can't even count how many times a clearly awed recruit was quoted praising Barwis following a visit...certainly unique for UM.
Now that should be the standard, having someone who's results were a contributing positive factor on the field as well as having the value add of being a draw for recruits.
No different than having the best practice facility or locker rooms, if you are going to do something, do it right.
