Semi-OT: Braylon Edwards encouraged Brandan Kearney (bball) to sign with MSU over Michigan
His cousins are former Houston Oiler and Detroit Lion Stan Edwards, and former Wolverine and Jets Pro Bowl wide receiver Braylon Edwards.
...
Kearney says Edwards is always available for guidance, but the controversial Jet left the ultimate decision up to Kearney. Edwards even went as far as to suggest that MSU may be a better fit for Kearney, particularly with The Wolverine basketball program still reeling from the effects of past probation, scholarship losses and poor recruiting classes.
A little bit odd, to say the least.

everybody in the state of Michigan loves Izzo, even Lloyd admires him.
Also, our basketball team isn't exactly world beaters and about 100% of the MGo users believe Beilein isn't going to win a NC at Michigan (maybe 50% believe he'll get to the Sweet 16 in the next 4 years).
Braylon, if true gave honest advice to a family member.

that his cousin wasn't good enough for the maize & blue? Or better yet..... his cousin wanted the #1 jersey

Clearly, Braylon Edwards attended Tommy Amaker's Umiveristy of Michigan

This quote makes it look like Braylon was using the same arguments that other schools use to negatively "recruit" his alma mater. If he did, indeed, regurgitate stale negative recruiting arguments concerning Michigan, the school needs to turn down his endowment until it comes with a lot less maintenance.

I don't see how in hell a UM graduate would do anything other than encourage a friend or relative or a complete stranger to get a Michigan degree. I agree that there's not enough info here to make a big deal about it, but it seems odd since Braylon has been very supportive of the University of Michigan in other ways.

I dont see a need for people to take shots at Braylon. He put in 4 years of hard work at UM and left as one of, if not THE best WR this university has seen. Hes in no way perfect but the guy is a Michigan Man and just because he gave some honest advice to a family member doesnt mean he should be chastized. So what, he punched Lebron's big-head cronie. So what, he doesn't catch every ball thrown his way. So what, he isn't always the most PC...at the end of the day, he bleeds Maize and Blue.

The thing is, I think he bleeds the Maize and Blue under Carr and the charities, but he hasn't been a particularly strong proponent of the current team and its coaching staff. Like I said, I'll respect what he did while he was here, but he's very hard to root for considering all of the things he's done in the pros.

A few points. From my understanding from WTKA and umhoops, Kearny was a pretty strong UM lean until Brundidge committed. It sounded like UM preffered CB at that spot and once he committed, Kearny quickly signed up with MSU. Obviously we can't know all of the specific details, but everything I read was that Kearny was close to Michigan's to have if they wouldn't have gone with CB.
Two, if Edwards is seriously interested in mentoring and helping kids out, he has to be honest to have any credibility. MSU has a ton to offer in basketball, so if he was getting slow played or anything by UM, why would he not jump at the chance to play basketball at MSU?

To me it's inexcusable. I wonder if academics even played a part of the discussion? The NCAA sanctions on the basketball program are ancient history. Beilein has already gotten us to the tournament and the program is slowly but surely getting back on track. Honestly there is no reason why Michigan shouldn't be the top basketball program in the state. It is after all the better school. We have far more resources than Michigan State and up until recently we had a richer basketball history.
You guys can excuse Braylon all you want but I refuse to do it. What you have to understand is that we led for Kearney for the better part of his recruitment (his father was quoted repeatedly as favoring Michigan). Honestly I'm tired of reading stories about how Braylon Edwards didn't back his University or his coaches. If he can't get in line with the rest of us then maybe we should just excomunicate him.
P.S. I do know of one reason why you might want to favor the MSU program. Their coach after all is willing to go to great lengths to cover the backs of his players. Just ask the female student who was sexually assaulted by two MSU basketball players only to have the case swept under the rug earlier this year...

Interesting coming from someone who calls himself Webber's Pimp....

If he is mentoring a young mind, then he must give that mind the best advice. Ultimately the decision still comes down to that young mind. Apparently he was on the fence with Michigan and decided to go elsewhere. He made the decision, not Braylon.
November 19th, 2010 at 1:19 PM ^
Ha! That's a good one!
Wait... you were being serious, weren't you? I'd have to ask, who is mentoring the mentors?
November 19th, 2010 at 11:47 AM ^
I'm sure Braylon told him about all of the wonderful things about the university as well as the obvious negatives that existed in the basketball program. As of next November, this won't be an issue because the practice facility and upgrades to Crisler will be complete, and the team will be playing at a top-half of the big ten level and trending upward.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I respect what Braylon did at UM and thought he was the best WR I've ever seen at UM, but he's incredibly hard to root for. He was apparently a jerk in Cleveland, got drunk and drove as a Jet, and just hasn't backed up his massive ego with comparable performance on the field. He has a right to his own opinions, but I will never root for him in the pros unless he has a massive shift in his attitude.
November 19th, 2010 at 12:00 PM ^
If true, it's not a surprise. As a commenter said earlier Braylon is Braylon. He's all grown up now so he is who he is. I still have love for him on the field. He's always had mad skills. But he was a freakin idiot in H.S. Everyone has a Braylon-Type in their family, no?
November 19th, 2010 at 3:38 PM ^
I saw Braylon at a Michigan game this year. I like him a lot, one of my favorite wolverines. I think hes a good guy. If his causin played football I think Braylon would have encouaraged him to go blue.

but he's far from the place of esteem that I held him in a few years ago. In recent years, he's done less to help our program, or represent our university with class. Crap like the #1 jersey drama, and the MNF "Lloyd Carr's Wolverines" just provided fuel for the torches used by the mobs already out to get Michigan.
I wish him well, but I hardly go out of my way to watch him like I used to. "Dead to me" may seem strong, but as a fan, it's not really that far off from being accurate either.
