Cutler to Lions?
Is it just me or should we do anything possible to obtain Cutler? I mean drafting Staford with the #1 pick is 50-50 at best that he becomes a successful NFL QB. Cutler has already proven that he can be a reliable NFL QB and has arguably the greatest upside of any young QB out there right now... with the way we have been drafting lately I would be happy with trading both first round picks if it came to that.
No doubt it would be an upgrade at the position. With so many areas of need, I hate to seem them use the first pick on a quarterback. O line, D line, LB, secondary . . . they all need help. What do the Broncos want for him?
Apparently we already offered them our 2nd round pick, but that doesn't seem to be enough.
They arent gonna trade him
Once he gets over his little bitch fit he will be a Bronco
yeah thats what I think as well... It's disappointing that we didn't pull the trigger when it looked like we had a shot at him. The Patriots only ended up getting a 2nd rounder for Cassel, I wounder if the Broncos wanted more than just Cassel in that proposed 3 team deal. We could have just thrown another pick at them to get the deal done if that was the case.
Cutler would be well worth a 2nd and a 3rd rounder, Hell, at the current market price (2nd rounder for Cassel), that late first and a 2nd rounder seems to be an offer that might have a chance, and would be well worth it for the Lions, it would allow them to take either Jason Smith OT, or Aaron Curry LB at the top of the draft.
I'm out here in Denver, and the sports radio chatter is really heated. To boil down the multivaried opinions from those in the know is:
1. Jay Cutler's sorta been a whiny jerk for a while about coaching and the transition from Shanahan to McDaniels. He also, while talented, isn't a winner. Elway had as little talent back in the day and he managed to eke out 10 wins, something Cutler's never done.
and the other side...
2. Jay Cutler, much MUCH beloved by Denver fans, is a talent you're not going to find very often, and there are few players who you'd rather have. McDaniels and Xanders (the GM) were douche-y in their management, misleading Cutler and refusing to admit that they contemplated the trade.
In any case, the Cutler-to-Lions meme needs a third actor if its going to get off the ground. We have shite for a back up (w00 Patrick Ramsey!), so we'll need a replacement.
They're not drafting Stafford. They're drafting Aaron Curry. Count on it.
yeah, they are saying possibly Culpepper, but I think the only way that the Lions could get him is if they trade the #1 pick (Stafford) or just draft and trade Stafford.
They ought to ship the Dolphins the #20 for Chad Henne, who goes with a 3rd this year and a 4th next year to the Broncos for Cutler.
With Pennington and Beck, the Dolphins have some time before they need to find another QB of the future.
That's actually a pretty good idea. The dolphins are looking pretty solid at QB, and they would probably take our #20 pick or even that second round pick for him. Come on Steve Ross...
The Dolphins are not trading Chad Henne. As far as I understand, they believe that Henne has much more upside than Beck, which is why they drafted Henne in the second round a year after drafting Beck in the same round. Henne is their quarterback of the future; Beck is just kind of there
That #20 pick from the Cowboys would be worth it. Mostly, though, I don't want to see them draft Stafford. I live in FL, and watch a lot of SEC ball. Stafford does not play well against good competition. His decision-making is terrible against faster defenses, and he seems to choke in big games.
Every defense in the NFL, even shitty ones, are faster than Florida and LSU, who smoked his ass and served it to UGA-IX (or whatever number they are on now) last season.
Luckily for Lions fans, Tom Condon represents Stafford, and there is no way he will ever get signed before the draft, even if the Lions really want him. Since the Lions have been pretty straightforward about wanting to sign their pick before they take him, that apparently precludes drafting Stafford.
Leaking this news has actually strengthened the Lions position while weakening Denver's. Cutler knows and he is both embarassed and pissed off. It is harder to get equal value for a QB who wants out than one who wants to stay.
I might be nuts, but I would rather have Henne than Cutler, especially for the price it will cost. Wait, I am not a Lions fan anymore. Screw those guys.......pleasegethenne
Completely insane. Cutler has a stronger arm than Henne, is more mobile, and has proven he can perform in the NFL. Henne MIGHT be a good NFL Qb, Cutler IS a good NFL Qb.
Cutler was one of the best QB's in the NFL last season, and is 25. Henne has not taken a snap. In other words, Cutler is, right now, a top-tier NFL QB. Henne rode the bench behind a QB who is appreciably worse than Cutler, and may never be a starter.
If they want a pudgy, immobile guy with a big arm they might as well just hang onto Culpepper. Whoever goes back there this year is just going to get killed anyway. Draft to strengthen the lines this year and look quarterback next year.
Trade the first overall pick to KC for Cutler and we would save a shit ton of money. Then instead of drafting a line, we could sign some proven vets.
Cutler=Denver
Cassel=KC
I don't get it.
holy fish sticks it's getting late. i can't believe i wrote that. night everyone.
Cutler is very talented...but seems like a little bit of a head case.
Millen passed on him a couple years ago...when he shoulda drafted him... but Cutler would have been totally ruined and out of the league had he gone to the Lions... so he lucked out in Millen's incompetence.
draft a QB in this years draft then I am no longer going to be a fan of the Lions. I will pick another pro team and cheer for them as if they were my own. When I have kids someday they will not be raised as Lions fans either. All of this is based on this draft.
The forth rated QB in this class is Hoyer (yes, MSU Hoyer) if that alone doesn't tell you how shit filled this years QBs are then I don't think you know much about football. Stafford underachieved this year and so did Sanchez (with the best D in football!!!) so my point is don't take a QB. It will be a blatent money grab and help us win in no way shape or form.
I totally agree, but can you really stop being a lions fan? They seem to pull me in every time... You'll still watch them if only to laugh at how they find different ways to lose games.
it will be a complete departure. I will never watch them again, ever. Even if they become like the Patriots. This much I can promise you.
If you're fandom will disappear before this Lions draft pick ever plays a down in the NFL, then I doubt you were ever much of a fan.
That's like me saying if Michigan signs Austin White that I'll never be a fan of Michigan again.
No, it's not. Michigan doesn't pick when they get these commitments. The Lions have the first pick in the draft, which is a powerful position; they can take any player they like. They've bungled drafts in the past before, and it's understandable fans would get fed up if they made another poor decision. They wouldn't support the team because of the poor decision making, not because they simply hate Matthew Stafford.
Also, if Michigan could guarantee they would get one player, and they picked Austin White, I'd be pretty upset.
Magnus, you are better than that. The Lions have repeatedly picked bullshit picks. Their line has been awful for as long as I can remember. They have picked offensive skill positions over defense with their first pick in every draft since the 90's. Everyone knows that is no way to build a team made for winning. The Lions picks are blatent grabs for fan attention and ticket sales. they in no way have even remotely attempted to build a team that is capable of winning. They have built a team that is capable of getting fans to purchase tickets and jerseys. If that continues this year I am no longer riding that boat. I have been a fan of the Lions for 26 years. I just wish our fan base was smarter. If you all wanted a winner you would discontinue attending games en mass until a change was made. We are fully capable of forcing Fords hand. If the team lost money they would no longer be under Ford control and that will be the greatest day in Lions football history.
Ernie Sims?
Jeff Backus?
Gosder Cherilus?
Hey, if you want to abandon the Lions based on an arbitrary reason like who they draft with the first pick this year, go ahead.
All I'm saying is, if Stafford or Sanchez (or whoever) ends up being a stud and turning this team around, I hope you stick with whichever team you give your allegiance to. Don't come back and claim to be a Lions fan after only about a decade of horrible football. (The Lions were frustrating but decent through the 1990's.) If the Cardinals and Bengals had fans like you, well...their stadiums would be empty every Sunday.
Only about a decade of horrible football? I'd say only about a decade of "decent" football (I know they were good in the 50's, so let's call it two decades).
I'm guessing someone with the name "His Dudeness" is not 60 or 70 years old and therefore is probably not much over 30, if at all. And if that's the case, then the 1990's and the 2000's are really the only relevant decades. And since the Lions were decent-to-good for most of the 1990's, then really, it's only the last 9 years or so that have been bad.
So the breaking point for you is if the Lions draft a QB with the first pick. Let's see, recent Lions first round draft picks that I can remember.
Qb-Joey Harringtion
RB-Kevin Jones
WR-Charles Rogers, Mike Williams, Roy Williams, Megatron
OL-Jeff Backus, Aaron Gibson, Stocker McDougale, Cherilus
LB-Chris Claiborne, Ernie Sims
DB-Terry Fair, Michael Westbrook
I don't care who they draft as long as it is a viable NFL player that could make a pro bowl someday. The Lions have proven that no matter what the position, they don't know who to draft.
I hope the lions draft another wide receiver for their first round pick.
Just flew in last night and boy are my arms tired.
what's the deal with ovaltine? the can is round, the mug is round, they should call it roundtine!
That's gold, Dex-ey, GOLD!
Bania!
