Hypo: What if Gary Moeller stayed?

Submitted by 1408 on

Moeller was before my era by a little bit but I am curious what might have happened to Michigan had he never gone to Excalibur that night in Southfield.  The guy had a .758 winning percentage and was back to back Big Ten coach of the year.

He might have coached for 15 seasons at that rate (especially given that he had immediate success following Bo).

Do we still win it all in '97 if he is the HC?  Do we win more?  Interesting to think about.

There is an unseen force in the universe that preserves the past, present, and future. The past is projected into the future just as the future projects into the past. When another force (time travelers, meddling aliens) disrupts this natural flow, the universe fights back to protect itself. So, if Moe had stayed, in the end everything would still be exactly the same.

While unfortunate that Moeller made an ass out of himself while drunk, I believe that one incident and him stepping down as coach was THE WORST thing to ever happen to the program. Had he just profusely apologized and fought for his job, I think the program would have continued on a path of greatness. Not saying Carr was a bad coach. Carr did pilot the team to a NC. But IMO, Moeller would have done more than Carr di

Regardless, we'll never know. I

On the flip side, it could be that there were more "issues" to Moeller than we knew and that it was the best thing for him to step down.

With all that typed, the reality is that we are seeing Harbaugh in a situation where he needs to put together a competent team this year. Should this year end up like last year, NO ONE will be able to access this site due to bandwidth issues.

Remember an undefeated season (1992) under Moeller, when UM had three tied games?

(This was in response to post #23.  BTW, that season ended with a Rose Bowl win.)

Gary was a much better X-O coach than Lloyd. He also was not at all risk averse.

Main points of outcome difference:

1997 our offense if far more productive with Gary calling the plays BUT Lloyd may have still been DC and Lloyd's D's weren't all that great.  Might have been a wash. Might have taken both polls. Really depends if Lloyd had moved on to a MAC HC job by then.

1999 National Champions. Offense would have been unhinged under Moeller. Every O starter went onto the NFL. Nothing would have stopped us.

Likely would not have experienced the slow rot of the 00's either...

Of course I would have phrased it:

What if one of the first petulant, idiotic Michigan fans had shown one ounce of respect and let a man eat a nice dinner with his family instead of trolling?

But I get your point.

Great thing is Moeller and Carr together for 5 or 6 more years would have had both offence and defence performing at a high level and by the time Moeller gets his chance in the NFL, Carr can pick up the torch and the RichRod mistake never happens.

One thing is for sure, it seems the fanbase often does more harm than good.

Gary Moeller earned a legendary reputation as a head coach of a very struggling team of that era which was University of Michigan. Establishing a great winning percentage like .758 is a record of him. Many students can maintain it as I visit studyclerk.com/pay-for-college-papers to pay for college papers that helped me to do so.
