cuttin the cord update

Hey all,

Took the plunge to get rid of cable ($135 month--every month). Thought you might want an update on some stuff.

As far as I can tell - Sling does NOT have BigTen. They just cut relationship (or something).

We ended up with DirectTV NOW. Week in and honestly - we LOVE it.

Pros: $50 per month (still have to pay for internet - $35 month). lots of channels. Great picture no lag thus far. cancel and renew when you want, no penalty.

Cons: does not work with all systems on the TV. (didn't work with our Xbox One). Right now, pay two months in advance, and they give a free Roku. Ours came in a few days, works great.  I am not sure if you can use a DVR - so that is kinda limiting.  Have not seen any other negatives yet.

Anyway, that is all. thought you might like to know.

I got it during the introductory period so I'm locked in at $35/mo for as long as I have it and they have added several channels since then.

I'm happy now but almost cancelled a few times.  It wasn't ready to go live when introduced and it seemed more like a beta test.  I guess that's why they discounted it heavily?

DVR means nothing to me.  I watch very little TV except the business channels first thing in the morning and right before bed. Also, live sports if something interests me.

has caused prices to go sky high on cable and internet. High speed internet and basic cable is costing me $175/mo. Cox cable is a rip off monopoly in KS. Everything around me is wired cable, so my max theoretical speed is around 65 mbps.  Youtube TV looks very interesting. What is the minimum internet speed needed for YouTube? Thinking of going with Youtube TV - $35.00 plus 40 mbps package at $50.00/month. 85/month is much better than 175/month, plus I'll get the BTN.

These have quickly become the most insufferable threads on MGoBlog...

I can handle talking cars, beer threads and all the other fun offseason stuff, but am I the only one who thinks constant congrats threads for folks who are trading out their cable package for 5 different streaming services to save a few bucks are beyond the scope of even OT season???
