OT (Sort of): Hump Day Quiz -- Michigan vs. the SEC

Submitted by M Ascending on

This has been another year in the headlines of Michigan vs. the SEC; Harbaugh vs. Pete Finebum, etc.  And in just three weeks, we will be facing off against the Florida Gators.  So, why not an easy pop quiz about Michigan's history with the SEC.

Again, please do not loook up the answers before you post -- it ruins the fun for everyone.  And I suggest that after you read the questions you scroll down to the bottom and post your responses before reading everyone else's.  That way, no spoilers.  So, here we go.

Question 1: In the entire history of Michigan football, we have played just 37 games against current SEC teams, with one game ending in a tie.  WHAT IS MICHIGAN'S RECORD IN THE REMAINING 36 GAMES AGAINST THE SEC?

Question 2:  CAN YOU NAME THE ONLY SEC TEAM THAT MICHIGAN HAS NEVER PLAYED?

Question 3:  CAN YOU LIST EVERY SEC TEAM THAT MICHIGAN HAS BEATEN?  (Feel free to guess the number of wins against each of them.)

Question 4:  CAN YOU NAME EVERY SEC TEAM THAT HAS EVER BEATEN MICHIGAN?  (Again, feel free to guess the number of losses.)

Answers will be posted tomorrow with some interesting commentary on the history of Michigan vs. the SEC.  Have fun.

Question 1: I'd say we're 20-16, without the tie.

Question 2: Might be my relative youth showing, but it has to be Georgia, right?

Question 3: Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Vandy, Auburn, Arkansas, Texas A&M, and Kentucky.

Question 4: Mississippi State, Alabama, Tennessee, Missouri, LSU, South Carolina, and Auburn.

Oh gosh. Let's see...

1. 25-11-1 I do know we have a winning record against the SEC. I believe that actually came up recently in a thread.

2. LSU? Second guess would be A&M, but I feel like I remember reading about us never having played LSU before in one of those who we'd like to see on a future schedule threads.

3. Uhhh, numbers ain't happening. Let's try Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Vandy, Missouri, Ole Miss (or maybe that was just hypothetically in my head), Georgia, Kentucky, A&M, Arkansas

4. Tennessee, South Carolina, Miss. St, Alabama, Arkansas... the first four I actually know for certain; Arkansas I feel like I read we were 1-1 against when we ended the h&h with them for ND.

1. 23-13

2. Wondering if Texas A&M and Missouri count. Regardless, I will say Georgia because there is a lot of interest in this matchup but I think I recall seeing we've never played.

3. Alabama - I know Brady beat them (I'll say 3 times overall),

Florida - Carr's farewell, 2 years ago for sure (3),

Auburn - Can't remember off hand, but "certain" we used to play in the 80s (2),

Vanderbilt - I know we beat them in regular season contests (5),

Tennessee - Don't remember off hand, but think we've beaten them in a bowl game (2),

A&M - because I don't think they are the answer to 2 (1),

Missouri - see above (1),

South Carolina - I know we lost to them once, and I don't think we have a losing record against them (1),

Arkansas - Definitely beaten them in a bowl (1),

LSU - Guessing (1),

Ole Miss - We once set our total offense record against them with 700+ yards (1),

Mississippi St. - See South Carolina (1)

I'm forgetting the last SEC team and looking up is cheating.

4. Alabama - Jerry Jones classic for sure (5 losses),

Florida - Feels like we've played them enough to have a lost against them (1),

Auburn - see question 3 (2),

Tennessee - I remember their TE running through our secondary like they were standing still (1),

Mississippi St - Yea, trying to forget about this one (RR's demise) (1),

South Carolina - I wish we would have blocked Clowney (not as much as Vincent Smith) (1)

A&M - guessing (1)

Arkansas - guessing (1)

I upvoted you for taking such a comprehensive approach to responding. Lots of errors, but at least you gave reasons for your choices. And BTW, Lewan did block Clowney effectively the whole game, basically neutralizing him. On the Smith play, SC stunted and Clowney blew through the interior. So, of course, all ESPN focused on was the one big hit, not Taylor outplaying him the whole game.
